Oh Thats too bad..
I have no more advice than the typical grandmother one: Eat a lot of chicken soup.
Hope you get well soon! Best of luck!
|
Drink fluids, get enough sleep every night and get flu vaccinations if you haven't already.
|
Campbells chicken noodle soup and sprite.

Drink lots of fluids, get lots of rest, and don't forget to eat well, even though you may have no appetite. Take your favorite fever-reducer (children's Motrin is absolutely delicious, though you might need to eat a lot of if given you're not a child ) and basically take a break from life.

The last one is a tad tricky since we don't have them here in Korea as far as I'm aware. Also I'm allergic to a lot of medicines so I don't want to risk relying on drugs. I do need way more sleep though; four-five hours isn't cutting it during Winter.
|
Take some multivitamins. They do wonders.

Four/five hours isn't close to what you need.
Last time I had the flu I found myself in bed for ten+ hours a day.
And I'm surprised Korea doesn't have flu vaccinations...not that they're going to help you since you already have the flu.

I haven't taken multivitamins and I haven't been sick since either.
Anecdotal evidence from one source means nothing.
That being said, you should definitely take some vitamins.

lots of fluids, vitamins, and flu meds. Try to stay off your feet, 할매.

Sounds like it sucks for you then. Without OTC remedies or medicine of any kind you can't exactly just will a cold away. Learn korean.

I thought this thread was going to be about relationships
Anyways, the best advice I can give is to sleep A LOT That can cure pretty much anything.

VITaMIN C is like sieging tanks on your cold's nat. Orange Juice is good for that.

How are ingredients listed on OTC medications in korea? I'd presume they use english for chemical names and stuff, so you could look for something with dextromethorphan for coughing, and diphenhydramine for sneezing.

Is it possible to ask a korean friend to translate for you?

Drink tea+honey, eat soup; take vit C, vitamins in general; eat raw garlic, ginger. Oregano oil can help with some of the symptoms like coughing, runny nose. You will smell, unfortunately
|
1. Vinegar (solutions in water or used to flavor your soup) can help soothe some symptoms. 2. Exercise if you can. It boosts your immune system, but be careful about your sweat. >_>
|
When I'm sick, I just eat my dryer lint. It usually helps =/

What are your allergies? I might be able to translate something for you. -_-
|
BIG YES's
1. LOTS of Citrus stuff like Orange, Orange Juice and more 2. EAT UP your body is fighting nasty bacterias and without energy your body cannot fight them so eat up good healthy medicinal foods such as vegetable broth, chicken soup 3. 8-10 hour Sleep - when your sleeping your body will recover with the white blood cells rejuvenating and fighting off the bad stuff 4. FLUIDS - drinking water is essential 5. IF you have Fever and your body is really warm you must treat it with cold water by massaging and soothing the whole body as your body temperature must be at the ideal conditions
NO's 1. No going outside as its mega cold in Korea + Germs and Bacteria outside 2. NO drinking cold, drink WARM or HOT 3.Try to Sweat as much of possible as it is a good sign the body is recovering this involves eating stuff like hot and spicy RAMEN
I am a not a certified doctor and i will not be eligible for any damages or injuries incurred by the individual please take these advices at your own risk

Clear fluids, 10-12 hours sleep, vitamin C, easy-to-eat foods (as in easy to digest, not easy to make / get).

GO see a doctor. I can recommend you to some English speaking ones. If you search for them, there are there. And get a thicker jacket! You can buy one off gmarket for like 30,000. A nice puffy warm jacket instead of the thin fall jacket you have!
English speaking doctors will be able to talk to you about your allergies. Stop making it seem like Korea's out to get you, if you search for it, or ask me for help you can find!!
And get your co teachers to help set up a phone account now that you have a phone! I hate not being able to call you.
|
Chicken soup being good is not just a myth. It's warm liquid and easy to digest, meaning your body can put more work into killing the disease. Drink grape and orange juice as both have lots of antioxidants. Also keep away from heavy (Fatty, harder to digest) foods. Stay warm and get plenty of rest, but maintain some activity to keep blood flowing.
Hope this helps, Good luck.

Your health is more important than a few dollars. Also your willing to go to work and infect other people with H1N1 if you have it? That doesn't seem very nice.
Go to a doctor.

Same routine everytime I'm not feeling great:
1.)Drink a lot of juice (Oj is best, apple is pretty sugary) 2.) Get some of those chewable Vitamin C tablets. 3.) plenty of SLEEP, not just chilling out on the couch or in bed watching TV or whatever. Get some aspirin for headaches/body aches if they are keeping you awake.
I don't know how well you'd be able to go about procuring medicine (you mentioned you don't know enough Korean to describe allergies) but plenty of OJ and sleep should cover vitamin C, fluids and rest.
|
Have you ever had good ginger tea? If you're sinuses ar blocked from a cold its a great way of clearing them if you like the taste of ginger. Also it helps to settle your stomach if thats bothering you.
Get a lump of ginger and cut it into slices. Then crush the slices with the fat side of the knife and put them in boiling water. Then get some rock sugar (I dunno how else to call it, just a rectangular log of sugar... perhaps anyother sugar will do, but this tastes the best) and dissolve some into the mixture or it will be bitter. Then wait for it to cool and enjoy.

Pharmacy student here =O
The 2 most important things when dealing with a cold are lots of sleep and lots of fluids! A cold will usually last about 7 days...and if you try and treat it, it will last about a week. There really isn't anything you can do to make it go away much quicker. First generation antihistamines (Benadryl, Chlor-Trimeton, etc.) will help deal with the runny nose/cough/general unpleasantness, but they will make you drowsy =( =(. Vitamin C can't hurt, but it's not really proven to help very much. If you find yourself sick for an extended period of time (more than a week), then go see a doctor! Hope that helps =)

NeverGG most pharmacies around where I live (Sinchon) sell TheraFlu, which is a drinkable remedy, they have day and night time versions, the daytime one allays teh symptoms and the nighttime one (drowsy) fights it away
I strongly reccomend it it helps me every time, give it a go!
I also have a pretty severe cold these days
I find that an air humidifier can work wonders, because Seoul winters are so dry compared to the UK/Ireland, messes up our noses :X
|
Everything everyone said. Do it.
And keep getting adequate protein intake. This is definitely not a scientific way of evaluating anything, but when I've kept up protein intake (in addition to doing everything else as suggested,) I recover pretty quickly. Not much point in using any treatments for an illness if you're not even eating what you need for basic metabolic functions.
|
Yes I forgot I take alot of over the counter stuff (day and night) to feel good while working sick.
|
I cant say anything that hasent been said ten times already, but i hope you get well soon. You really should take lilsusies advice just to make sure, and get a warm jacket! Thats the number one reason people get sick, if they arent dressed warm enough.

stay away from tea if your throat doesnt feel well, the caffeine is pretty bad for you. Warm water with lemon and honey works wonders though.

if im not mistaken it was proved that vitamin c isnt as useful to combat flu as we thought (soft way to say it is USELESS)... but i dont remember the source.

I've had a gigantic cold over the last week.
Remember when you were told as a kid to drink lots of water? I've always tried to drink more than usual when I have a cold. What they meant though, was to drink LOTS of water. I sat with a drink bottle beside me. I drank it down normally, as one might drink a glass of water. After it had emptied, I went and filled the bottle up again. Almost immediately, I felt thirsty again, so I started on the second bottle.
Went through about 6 litres of water in a couple hours. Had to go to the toilet a lot of course. Next morning I woke up, after feeling absolutely horrendous the entire previous day, feeling much better.
Probably a combination of factors that all helped in the end. Do try it though, it will help you (if not as much as it seemed to help me).
Hope you get well soon.
|
get well soon nevergg!
lots of advices already, just eat fruits, lots of fruits esp. citrus so you could have vitamin c.
|
sorry if this has been said already. To stay healthy, take a brief cold shower every morning ( i shower warm and then briefly cold). Take a deep breath from time to time. Drink a lot. Exercise at least a bit. Sleep enough.
|

Vitamin D at least 5,000-10,000 IU see this link for more details. Especially of you get very little sunlight, drink no/little dairy and rarely eat fish. I took 20,000-25,000 IU when I was sick.. worked like a charm. My 'flu' was gone in <2 days.
Vitamin D upregulates cathelicidin and defensins which are anti-microbial peptides. AMPs protect against and help fight bacteria and viruses. Also, vitD increases T lymphocyte activity.
edit: largest study to date: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19237723
Vitamin C does nothing for colds. That's a myth. It boggles my mind how anyone can think an anti-oxidant can improve the immune system.... and there's ZERO research that shows vitC protects against or improves colds or the flu.
(btw, doubters -- google and pubmed)
Combine vitamin D with lots of sleeping and you'll be healed in no time. Take a multi-vitamin as well just in case your body is lacking other deficient minerals.
|
Oh the irony, as I wright this about five hours after my first post in this thread, I am now quite sick...DANG. Ah well, I pretty much slept all day.

|
boiled ginger. drink the liquid straight up and go to sleep.
|
Honey, Whisky(lots) and lemon before you want to sleep. IT helps your throat and helps you sleep
|
Keep your feet dry people underestimate the power of a good pair of waterproof boots. In general staying dry is the most important thing for you to do out in the cold. The specific heat of water is ludicrous and will leech heat out of you!
|
i got a cold too {sniff} {cough}
|
Down half a bottle vodka, put on a thick winter jacket, curl up under your warmest blanket, take a few sleeping pills, and pass out for 20 hours.
Works wonders for me.
|
2000IU of vitamin D3 daily should be common practice for anyone who's not out in the sun during peak hours. It's pretty much the reason why your immune system weakens in the winter time, as your skin is exposed to less UV light, leading to less vitamin D production.
Many people take up to 10,000IU of D3 daily with no reported side effects. I'd go with 2000IU for basic protection from respiratory illnesses, meaning the common cold, flu, etc. I think the average body needs at least 3000IU daily, so some people go with around 5000IU, since that's a common pill dosage.
As for toxicity, the least reported case is 40,000IU taken daily for 6 months. After that, it's in the hundred thousands. Still, I think 10,000IU is probably the most you can safely take, but imo wanting to take more than a few thousand, you should get your vitamin D levels checked so they don't go above 100ng/ml or so. I think aiming for around 60ng/ml to 80ng/ml is ideal according to doctors who are privy to most up to date understanding .
Also, ignore the vitamin C & orange juice crowd. They really have zero idea what they're talking about. It was a theory from 50 years ago, that's been debunked over and over again by scientists.
|
For staying in good health overall (avoiding illness to begin with), I'd suggest taking vitamins and echinacea daily.
