I just conducted a round of interviews for an assistant, and I hope my experience will help those who are about to embark on their first interview.
I started off by sending out a very brief description of the job and asking for CVs. From the CVs, I picked out 3. I called these 3 people, scheduled them for interviews and gave them my hand phone number.
"Call me if you need any information to prepare for the interview," I said, expecting at least one of them to ask The Question.
"Do you need me to bring anything?" one of them asked. Good question, but it wasn't The Question.
"How do I get to your office?" asked another. Good question, but it still wasn't The Question I was waiting for.
"What should I wear?" asked a third.
"I don't know... how hot are you?"
"What?"
"Nevermind. We don't have a dress code here. Wear whatever you think is appropriate."
Definitely not The Question.
The three of them stumbled through the interview and performed terribly, which was expected, since none of them had asked The Question. Finally, at the end of the interview, we asked, "is there anything you'd like to know about the company?"
And they all said, "um, actually, what's this job all about?"
At last, The Question! But alas, too late!

EDIT: I should mention that we called in a 4th candidate when these 3 didn't work out, and he DID ask "could you tell me a bit more about the nature of this job? What kind of duties would I be expected to perform, what kind of roles do you hope I can play?"
As a result, when he came for the interview, he was perfectly prepared. He did not know what questions we were going to ask. However, he was keen to take the job and was able to explain how his skills and experience would gel with what we needed. And since one of the job requirements is coming up with ideas for TV, he came prepared with a list of ideas that he presented. Very, very impressive.
Needless to say, we are making him an offer and will probably pay him more than we have ever paid someone in this position.

Is this project something that will come up on mainstream TV?

Not exactly. The position is for someone to help me to come up with ideas for a range of clients, from corporations to TV channels. So some of those ideas should make their way to TV.
By the way, do you want a copy of the docu you were in? I don't know if they burned out a DVD copy... they should have.

Yep, it's really fun =)
52 minutes, I think. I haven't actually seen it myself... I was hunting for a copy but I couldn't find one. I'll ask the producer.

It might have been that they misunderstood the "preparation" that you said to them
It depends, from my experience, I often assume that candidates should prepare on their own for a job interview, and if someone asks me a question like the fourth guy did, i dont bother answering to be honest.

If they have some other source to get information from, well and good. But no matter what, they should not walk into the interview not knowing what job they're applying for. That's like playing a game of Starcraft without scouting.

Haha... The 4th guy used to be a banker.
I might be. Have to see my schedule, but tentatively yes, I guess... if we can get the dates sorted out!
