hey guys, it's been awhile
As I mentioned in my last blog I went to Korea for my holidays and as promised I took a lot of pictures.
More than 2000 to be precise (although when I got home I quickly cut that down to about 800)
However, I got lazy and never bothered to start another blog with lots and lots of pictures cause it seems like quite a bit of work but I feel like I should do this at some point so why not do it now

So my question is what are the best web sites to upload your photos too?
It seems like a lot of great photographers upload their stuff on flickr, should I do that too?
I already got an account there but you can only upload like 100 mb per month which in my case is about 20 pictures so that doesnt help that much.
Do you think I should upgrade my account (costs i think 25$ for one year) or is there a better, free website do upload it to?
Obviously 25$ for a year really isn't much but if there's something better already there's no reason to pay.

Here's a little preview just to check out if it works and what it looks like:

P.S. it would be very nice if the site is fast at uploading - and if it automatically compresses the file size, does so BEFORE uploading the freaking picture (had some experience where it was the other way around)

Wow sweet picture. I always used photobucket for large amounts of pictures, but I'm not sure if they have limitations or not.

If 100MB is 20 pictures you need to make your pictures smaller.

Well the fact that I see "this photo is not available anymore - photobucket" quite often kinda scares me, anybody else have experience with that site though?

you are right but a) thats a lot of work cause my laptop is rly rly slow ^^ and b) flickr also has limitations on the number of pics you can upload per month

I've had my photobucket as long as I've been playing starcraft never had any problems with it. Also it automatically scales them down to a specific size(Something I don't like it turns out) I just use image shack for things I need to not be scaled and photobucket for everything else.

Well what resolution does it scale it down to?
I'm just a little worried that it worsens the quality of the picture. Oh and does it do so before or after the upload?
Also the photobucket frontpage really makes me wanna vomit.

just use fotosizer to make the images smaller. The batch resizing is perfect for cameras. Sure, they'll suffer in quality a bit but even if you change the compressino to jpg or something similar, it'll become a lot smaller

I used imageshack actually to post up a bunch of pictures to teamliquid. I wouldn't recommend it, but you can't beat the price. Bunch of work resizing them though (I attempted to hotlink 80 different 6 megapixel files. That didn't work out well for anyone's browers).

Pro flicker makes a bunch of sense if you're planning on shooting that many pictures. Not only does it automatically back up your photos (worth it right there imo) but it also gives you better access to many different people who are all interested in creating great images through photography.

Good photo, but I think maybe you should turn down the contrast a bit...it's kind of harsh on the eyes because half of it is burnt out. I like the overall color of it, and I love the texture on the statue itself. Just the bottom right half of the photo distracts immensely. (:

As for uploading, I've never had any problems with photobucket as long as you don't mass hotlinked photos everywhere, as they have a bandwidth limitation per account.

Also, if you're posting photos on the internet, I would suggest resizing them so they're much smaller. A 400x600jpeg is more than enough for most forums, and shouldn't be more than 1-3MB even with the least number of compression settings.

Sites like DeviantArt have no upload cap. While it's not a very professional site (more of a social one), they've been making a lot of progress lately. They've really been cleaning up their submission process and their gallery organization options. You can't really hotlink from them, but you can at least have a gallery online for free. In addition, many professionals nowadays know what deviantart is and don't really mind looking at samples through there anyway. (:

So...in short, photobucket is the best option, though they won't resize until after you upload. I don't know of any site that will resize before the upload...

Download the program, Irfanview. It's a free image editing program. It's not nearly as powerful or reliable or...good as photoshop, but it has one thing photoshop doesn't have: EASY BATCH RESIZING. In photoshop, you have to do a whole bunch of bullshit saving strings of actions and whatnot to get that done, but Irfanview has a built in interface for it. I don't think it resizes quite as cleanly as photoshop does (even though you can adjust the resizing options much more easily as photoshop (they're not buried as deeply)), but it's well worth the tradeoff in convenience.

The only problems I've seen with photobucket is with NSFW pictures. I have 10 pages full of pictures there and they are all there still.

Yeah you're right, I went overboard with the contrast, though I actually think I did this with a lot of pictures, hopefully with the other ones it's fine though - This Korea trip was really the first one where I really wanted to take some nice pictures, I basically learnt photography during the trip, so considering that I'm quite proud of my babies
This also means that this was the first time I did a lot of image editing - I didn'T use irfanview or photoshop, but Lightroom. And surely like in this picture, I didn't do a perfect job with it (I think I really like dark colours too much..)

Oh btw, a site where it compresses before uploading: facebook ^^

Yeah I checked out the flickr best of october pages... man there's so many sick sick photographies, made me think "damn you still have a looooot to learn"
your post convinced me to get a flickr pro account, until Artosis had to come in and ruin it all.

JK of course, smugmug.com looks really great, I'm testing it right now... it's uploading with 864 kb/s .. jesus I didnt even know I had such amazing bandwidth. Uploading right out of Lightroom? Awesome. Customisable designs and layouts? Awesome. Goodlooking Diashows? Awesome.
I'm really leaning towards this, only question is whether I'm fine with a basic account instead of a more expensive power account.

thanks a lot!

Smugmug sounds amazing. I'd definitely consider that. Paying doesn't, though. :X

Anyway, Lightroom is a great program for what it does, which is exactly what the name implies...simulate a digital darkroom. Nothing wrong with that.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of your photos. (:
