Chick Corea Elektric Band - Light Years
This is definitely one of my favorite Chick Corea albums, and Chick Corea happens to be my favorite living jazz artist(and Corea, Clark, and White Trio has a gig next tuesday I'm attending, so psyked). Although I haven't done an exhaustive analysis, I would put this in my top 10 jazz albums of all time.
The album itself is the very definition of Jazz-Funk Fusion. Smooth and jazzy at times, while still retaining the rock-ish edge from the band's first album, it is a complete pleasure to listen to. The tracks are relatively short, but each of them has a fantastic groove, and features the fantastic songwriting talents of Corea.
The grooves are the main attraction here, thanks to drummer Dave Weckl and Corea's excellent keyboard work and smooth synth programming. The soloing is fantastic as well, from some absolutely sax wackiness from Eric Marienthal on the title track "Light Years," to smooth, lowpass filtered analog goodness from Chick himself(on just about any song). Overall, it is a great album, probably in my top 5 fusion albums of all time.
