So after the recent flurry of gaming-mice threads, I still have like 30$ in my paypal account from this hat I sold and I'm thinking about getting a new mouse. I have a personal value that it's totally retarded to spend more than 50$ on a mouse, and so with that in mind I've come down to the Salmosa http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-mice/razer-salmosa and the Krait http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-mice/razer-krait . From what I can tell, the salmosa is slightly better for RTS gaming (this is actually based almost solely on that I've heard a few times that NaDa has one), but it only has the left/right/wheel click and no exta buttons, while the Krait has 2 extra ones. I like to map those to be forward/backward for web-browsing.

Is the salmosa better enough than the krait to be worth the fewer buttons? Is there some 80$ mouse that will blow my mind and make me not regret spending that much fucking money on a goddamned mouse? Are gaming mice really that much better than normal mice?

About 95% of all games i play lately is just SC, but I do usually buy and play through new games when they come out (for multiplayer I mostly stick with SC because its just that much better tahn everything else, but I like to play a lot of singleplay FPS games and do plan on getting modern warfare 2 and playing that online when it comes out, but primarily I want a mouse that works best for RTS and not best for FPS).

Thanks for any advice, and sorry if this ain't blog worthy

If all you're looking for is a simple opinion, I can give you mine: I think the Salmosa rocks more than it's weight in gold.
I only tried the Krait very quickly (someone else's mouse) but those couple of games didn't make me want to buy it (even when compared to a silly genius mouse).
Obviously it depends what you're looking for. I love having lots of flexibility with my fingerstyle grip, so the smaller the mouse, the better... and that makes the salmosa absolutely perfect for me.

to offer another opinion, i have used a krait for about two years now and really like it. I have never tried the salmosa but im sure its fine as well so what it really comes down to is which you like the feel of more (shape). if you know someone with either of these asking them to let you use it for a few minutes would be a very good idea.

$50 on a mouse is mind blowing for me. I usually spend like $10 on a low end optical mouse if I need a new one.

wow you missed out on the woot's offer on the salmosa for $20 bucks($5 shipping). I have had the salmosa about two weeks now and was very well worth the money for a gaming mouse. I wanted to get something similar to the logitech mini op in size and the salmosa is only a bit bigger but not a noticeable difference and it was specially made for RTS games. I have the polling rate on medium and the dpi on 800 and it performs awesome.

For what it's worth, I'll tell you I've used the salmosa for a while and really like its size and weight for RTS. Sorry I can't help you compare, never tried the krait.

Logitech Mini Optical is the best mouse for sc and pretty good for most games imo. A friend of mine who was heavily into cs 1.6 switched to using one after a long period of using a G5 and a Salmosa because he felt it was much more fluid and more comfortable. They're also cheap as hell and durable I always seem to rant about this mouse in these threads but out of all the mouses I've tried (and I've used a good 5-6 decent gaming mouses for decent periods at a LAN cafe my friend owns) the logitech wins hands down.

Oh and Nada uses a mini-optical most of the time too, he only tried the Salmosa cause he got sponsored by Razer (I think I'm right there?)

^ This is true, it's just left/right click and a scroll wheel that doesn't tilt.

I use a Razer Krait and I like it alot. I've never used a Salmosa though.

Shameless self-promotion: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=101321

That thread has a bunch of "rebound time" stats for various mice. Salmosa seems to be > G5 for rebound time. Old microsoft mice also seem to be a lot of bang for their buck.

oh yeah, I got it confused with the deathadder for some reason lol.

Yeah I think I'll get the salmosa, seems to have more people saying it's great than the krait, but no direct comparisons.

I have a Salmosa and love it. I had the same debate between the two 40$ Razer mice, and heard better of the Salmosa. Had it for about a month and no problems!

I have a krait and i love it, they had RTS gaming such as starcraft in mind when they made it

my Gf got me a deathadder for my B-day, and I don't know much about it. Is it considered a good mouse for gaming/RTS? (it does work fine for me which is all I care about, but im curious)

i got a habu which is pretty much the same as deathadder and i like it aswell.

but the general consensus seems to be that fingertip style and smaller, lightweight is better for rts gaming. therefore stuff like salmosa or lmo are the preferred choice of the majority of sc gamers.

found the diamondback on newegg for 40$ lol

so basically the question just is, which mouse is best for RTS? I don't even know if that's really something that can be answered, so I think I'll just buy whatever mouse looks like it'll feel best.

I prefer small mice, i use a fingertip style of play and therefore like any small mice. There is a wireless Logitech mouse that is really smooth, not meant for gaming but its still nice and pretty small. The only downfall is if the mouse is too small, then the fingers and wrist cramp.
Why would you ever choose failure, when success is an option.

Salmosa's or Mini Optical's are best for RTS, they're lightweight, small and durable.

Gaming mouses are such a waste of money though lol, they're almost as bad as gaming keyboards. Would strongly STRONGLY recommend at least considering the mini optical.

If your not looking to spend more than 20-25 bucks then you might want to look into a mini optical, which I've had two in the passed but they seem to crap out after a while(sudden jerks although you never moved it) of using. The salmosa is almost identical in size and as previously stated in a post its very well made for fingerstyle grip. The con on the salmosa is its price and the mini op's con is logitech no longer produces any, so you would need to buy one off amazon or ebay and pray they have brand new ones.

it depends entirely on how u hold the mouse. the more comfortable it feels in your hand, the better and faster you will be able to play. I personally have a salmosa and its the best mouse ive ever used, i had a razer diamondback for a few years and really liked it as well, but i think the salmosa fits my hand just a bit better - i use a fingertip style grip. I tried a copperhead for a bit, which is meant for a palm grip style and it was uncomfortable as fuck - I ended up looking for another mouse instead. There is a part on the razer website that illustrates handholds and which mice are best for each type.

No. Avoid the G5 and the MX518. I have both of those mice and they are abysmally bad for rts, however, they're absolutely awesome for fps. I also have a copperhead was which decent for both genres, so I assume the krait (essentially a copperhead with less useless features and optical technology) would be ideal for you seeing as you also play fps.
