The work of trolls is to frustrate and infuriate. IgnE's original case against iamthedave's proposition, was returned with a sort of 'haha, you only make my point for me'. IgnE likes pointing out stupidity and intentional obfuscation.+ Show Spoiler + On February 11 2019 08:39 IgnE wrote: Yes, I can. But I don't understand why you think I would pose a rhetorical question that makes my "own initial objections less valid," and rather than assume one of the myriad ways in which you could be wrong, I'd like to know exactly which way you are wrong. It's fine if you want to admit you have no idea what I was talking about. But then I'm just left wondering why you bothered to object at all. It's never over until one of the usual suspects closes the loop in a defense of intentional misinterpreting free from consequences. The whole IgnE exchange starting with Simberto's version (incl. quoted posts) of the old "Conservatives aren't voting against the policies that have screwed them over, they're actually being conned into voting against their self interest!" canard is very instructive on how the non-argument proceeds. I'd challenge any mod to look at that exchange and go beyond dodging to pages of mod notes and actually give a reason that IgnE should be banned here. Did he need to only give an additional two sentences explaining why his erstwhile speaking partner did not legitimately try to have a conversation? Seeker? Liquid`Drone? Falling?

It's literally the place I have seen the most biased moderation on this website for years, and a part of why I stopped ever participating in political discussions. The amount of sarcasm and fallacies and personal attacks was out of control, but the actual moderation of it was extremely biased towards posters with certain political leanings or views. At best they make a mental note or a mod note, at worst you get warned or even banned. I think this could be remedied by having only mods who have no interest in the political thread moderate it. And it should be moderated such that people who break rules are treated equally based on what rules they break, not on a qualification of "how good their political posts are".

It's mostly gotten worse recently with how much clapter seeking the thread is. It's not an attempt to discuss or make jokes but say things they agree with and think is socially popular. It's a cancer that can't be treated.

The thread accurately reflects actual American politics in content and tone. The moderators have that going for them at least.

There are also conspiracy theorists like nettles. And our favorite Russian troll Zeo. All have left the thread for various reasons. But mostly because people don’t really give their arguments much credit.

Surely it’s not the majority of participants, who just want “good policy” and to “address the problems.” The thread accurately reflects actual American politics in content and tone. The moderators have that going for them at least. Sermo is a weird case because the only part of conservative ideology he appears to identify with is the victim narrative of being persecuted for conservative beliefs. Beliefs which he doesn’t appear to have, as far as I can tell. He otherwise agrees with centrist arguments, as long as he is permitted to feel aggrieved for the way society apparently persecutes centrists with mainstream opinions.

I guess I will just say: there seems to be an obsession in politics with "classifying where someone stands". It's counterproductive.

That is less true for the left leaning posters, who rarely self identify with a prescribed policital view. Monty Python disagrees with this. Also holy shit have you ever tried hanging around with anarchist punk types? If I have to hear one more variation of communo-anarcho-socialism or some other contradictory bullshit I'm going to cry.

My wife played a bunch of weird venues, one being an abandoned fire house that was very cold. There were some true legends of political theory there. But they had good beer and were happy to discuss the wood stove they used to heat the place.
