I was quite certain that there was an unwritten understanding of, "ok, Danglars is gone, let's talk communism!" among all USPOL regulars. Too much is held in agreement if xDaunt, Introvert, and Sermokala aren't posting. So it's always back to GH's views on Chavez/Maduro, Lenin, and socialism.
those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. and thus the thread cycle repeats?

To be fair, Igne has been doing a good job of that, it's unenviable work.

dont worry danglars, most of the thread agrees that lenin was a demon and that good revolutionaries should make peace with the overthrown aristocracy

“Everyone involved was sort of a nightmare person for different reasons” is a completely valid historical perspective. Looking for good guys and bad guys in history isn’t really studying history. Lenin is a compelling figure, but also a nightmarish one.

If somebody says he would be preferable to Trump or Hillary, I won't try to argue them out of it. It just isn't an easy progression into relevance today.

yeah i mean he was integral to what was only probably the most important event of the 20th century.

Only that the progression from Lenin to a current US Presidential candidate is tortured path that isn’t very fruitlful in discussions of current politics.

If we were in an upper division political science class or history class, and the audience was that of college students, then your sarcasm would have a point. In this case, it doesn't. The average attention span of the audience will not suffer answering such questions as "In what ways was Lenin and the Russian Revolution worse than failings of today's liberal democracies in the West?": Does Lenin have blood on his hands? Obviously. But so does every American President going back to Washington. Does he have a lot of blood on his hands? Yes. But then again, it is hard to even imagine the situation he and his comrades were in.
Related, how much of the socialism of his day is related to socialism's general failings to answer this one:
history cannot be wrapped up in a tidy sentence (fragment) like, "tragedy of the commons." people who suggest as much tend to be pretty bad at analyzing "current events" as well. Maybe it's an excellent summary at that stage of generalization, and maybe it's not. The determination between the two will be far longer than the average post. It'll be supported by conclusions from facts that are perhaps both in dispute. And you basically answered your own question IgnE proposition: Lenin was integral to the most important event of the 20th century, so why not discuss? IgnE answer: I know it's fruitless, but I'm reveling in taking this thread to topics beyond the latest bullshit from trump's mouth.

well you are right that the thread is not a place for a lecture. it is a large conversation. and there is a middle ground for an evolving discussion in response to pointed questions about context-embedded particulars. i didnt bring up lenin, but if the people want to discuss him then i will respond in an active way that seeks truth rather than in a hebetudinous submission to the 'wisdom' of sentence fragments
all notwithstanding the occasional place for soliloquy in conversation

I also don't see the thread as solely for debate. Debate finds its home in politics, naturally, but there's also plenty of shit that's very complex in politics, or has its roots in a deep historical context. Sometimes you only need discussion. Not everything needs to be a battle.

What I got from this is that Danglars subscribe much to his own importance as a topic setter, other than making a shitfest out of everything Trump.

You can’t even remark about a direction the thread has taken without the usual trolls popping up with the insult play.

WTF even is an insult play? Is that sexual slang for something. If it is, I want no part in your fantasy.

I think he means talking shit. We just call it roasting someone. As sick burn if you will. Talking a bunch of yang. Spitting game. Laying into someone. Dropping bombs. Straight up mercing the fool.
You’re right that Insult play sounds like some sort of kink. No judgment of course. Just not something we do in the thread.

I mean, is this really a discussion you're interested in being part of?
