I took this from Empyrean's thread in the Custom Maps section of the forums, as I think it would work just as well here. Feel free to let the noob (and not so noob) questions roll!
"Please use this thread for asking simple questions (ones that can be answered in a paragraph or less)."
Number the questions and answers, so this won't turn out to be a chaotic mess of a thread. Start with Q1, answer Q1 with A1, and so on.
I guess I'll start:
Q1: What's the fastest way to get workers into gas once the gas structure is completed? There must be something better than left-click dragging and hoping that three workers get selected.
|
A1: you can hotkey 3 workers nearest your planned geyser at the beginning of the game, then use them to move into the gas.
|
A1: first select 2 then select 1 :D this works very well, or you can select 4 and shift-click away one
(note: select 2 then 1 is faster as you send the first 2 in gas before getting the 3rd)
|
A1: hold shift, click 3 workers and send them or hotkey the 3 from the start
Q2: Are DT's viable in PvP?
|
A1I usually just box three that have just finished returning minerals. If I grab extra I select the extra from the wireframes and send it back to minerals. I think the absolute best way though is to send them one at a time with workers that have most recently dopped minerals, so that you maximize mining and minimize time waiting at the geyser.
I like the idea of this thread. Here's hoping the mods do too.
|
A1: note that sending all the 3 at once will be a waste of time anyway, so you are better off sending them one by one, or in two groups. Also, using C (return cargo) helps a lot.
|
A2: I am certain that they are "viable," but they may not always be the best option. In my opinion, it really depends on what is going on.
If you are in a large battle, sending 3 DTs to your opponent's undefended expansion can do wonders. If you are base trading, and you destroyed your opponent's robo already, DTs can win you the game. DTs in your main army could be useful too, as opponent observers can be destroyed so easily if they follow your opponent's main army.

Q3:How do you remove units from a hotkeyed unit group(example:10 marines and a scv bound to 1 and I only want the 10 marines)
A2:It depends,if he doesn't have a forge or robotics bay then yeah, obviously, but how many times do they not get one of those and still leave you alone long enough to get DTs?
|
Q4: Can you blink stalkers up a cliff where you have no vision?
Q5: As P, what do you do when you scout a fast 2 Gate? Make 2 Gates yourself?
|
A3: Hold shift and click the SCV removing it from the group. Then re-hotkey your selection of marines.
A4: No, you need vision
|
A3: ctrl-click the marines and then ctrl-#number (can just hold ctrl)
A4: no
|
A5 Depends entirely where you put your first pylon and gateway. If you put them at the ramp then a 2nd gateaway will help create a choke to funnel his zealots into your zealots. You can also put down a forge and a cannon instead which should stop it cold if your zealots from one gate can hold the choke long enough.
If you didn't build at your choke then your only option is to put down a 2nd gateway yourself, pull probes when you need to, and try to out-micro.

A1 - Box any number of workers, as long as it's something that looks like more than 3. Right click all of them to the geyser, then hold shift and click the wireframe 3 times, then release shift and right click back to the minerals. Once you get fast at this, you can transfer workers to 2 geysers at a new expo or to your 2nd gas REALLY fast. I wouldn't recommend it for your first gas, as generally there's not much going on and you can make sure you only pick the best drones for the geyser (i.e. the ones that aren't in the middle of returning minerals) and not disturb mining time.
|
Q6: What comes after this in Z FE BO: 9ovi 14p 15h ... ? (lol i forgot xD)
|
A6: depends but you usually want another OL so it pops just as you get 18 supply (queen +ling/drone right after brings you to 18 supply)
edit: if you didn't do the droning perfectly you won't have minerals for queen if you go OL right after hatch, you can choose to wait for spawning pool before OL
|
A6: it depends on ur tech path, normally a queen as pool pops and i like to do a 18 gas but u can do a gas anywhere between 18 and 22 then slowly tech.

A4: No, you need vision I'm quite certain this doesn't work since when you hit the hotkey for the group, the scv is again selected. Will the the ctrl method.

Press 1 (your hot key) Shift + click scv (scv deselected) Ctrl + 1 (new group formed.)
You don't "hit the hotkey for the group." Basically, you make a new group and hotkey it to the previous key.

Q7: How does SCV repair work with units that cost minerals and gas?
