edit* if your interested in good rap. Try eminem or Tupac. They rap from experience, write their own songs. and don't fuck up their voices with robots and computers.
i like how you hate those aspects of mainstream music but then suggest tupac because we all know he wasn't about gangster rap at all.
First off, generalizations such as "MAINSTREAM RAP SUCKS" is just plain ignorant. There are plenty of mainstream rappers who are extremely talented, such as Eminem and Lupe Fiasco (not as mainstream but still had some mainstream success). However I personally can't stand Gucci Mane. His beats sound like it was done by a 5 year old, his lyrics are subpar, and his flow is just terrible. And you can barely understand him. Plus he must say "Gucci" or some stupid noise like "BURR" five times every song. It's just sad what can be popular nowadays. Seriously, give me one of those beats and I'll rap to it and be popular.
And lol

I felt the exact same way about him. But after playing him alot and looking up his lyrics, you start to understand him more. Give him another chance unlesss youve heard enough :-/ His speech impediment makes him good because he makes some shit sound like it rhymes when it realy doesnt haha, plus its good for a laugh...But he has good songs.

I can see your point, and I have listened to alot of his songs. He just...annoys me. Seriously "Lemonade" makes me want to go kill baby kittens, it's THAT annoying. Seriously count how many times he says burr in that song. Makes me rage so hard. Also his lyrics on Wasted make zero sense. Yeah...I'm just not a fan .
edit: on the opposite side of the spectrum, listen to Eminem's verse on No Love on his new album. Seriously, that is the greatest verse of all time. No exaggeration, Eminem blew my mind on that song.

Eminem is the definition of mainstream rap.
Eminem was mainstream 10 years ago. His music was definitely mainstream around 1999-2001 but by 2004 definitely not. Popularity, national/international media appearances, radio play, music videos on MTV, etc, does not automatically mean mainstream. I can't imagine being mainstream without that stuff but it's possible to have that stuff and not be mainstream. As OpRaider said, mainstream rap has been fucking bitches making money and being violent. Em's song W.T.P. from Recovery is pretty damn anti-mainstream. His formula has always been outside of what the mainstream is but when Slim Shady LP first hit, he was so popular and powerful that his style broke into the mainstream. He maintained through Marshall Mathers LP but by Eminem Show mainstream rap had already taken quite a different direction from Eminem.

Yeah I do agree with you 100%. I just thought it was funny to HATE mainstream rap, and then suggest eminem and tupac. I feel that Eminem is simply mainstream because his influence is so large that his music can be related to the majority of hip hop fans. I feel that Eminem brought back what mainstream used to be from the 80's and 90's, with great hip hop like the Chronic (Dr. Dre obv), Public Enemy, and NWA. Mainstream back then and mainstream now are like 180 degree opposites.
What I see now is that artists change THEIR music in order to BECOME mainstream. Eminem just did what he does best, and the mainstream listeners followed him.
Z-Ro and Trae are legit. Boosie and Gucci aren't really my taste... more like vibe music and I'm not really about that. But I think you'd like A$AP if you don't already. Here are some songs you might like:
This just sums up everything wrong with the rap game, even if it's a few years old.
Naw naw naw, here's what wrong with the rap game:
(This list turned out to be way longer than I originally intended, but I thought it was really funny. Also, 100% disrespect to all of these 'artists'. Quit the rap game forever.)
