Here's an even bolder statement: piracy helps the sales ;]. It's better than any kind of advertisement.

I myself know many people (including me) who use blogspots to find music and try them before buying, if we like them, we buy them. But sometimes we run into other albums we've never even heard about and liked, so we buy those too. People are all up in arms about piracy, but I think it helps the music industry more then it hurts it, because the average person who downloads will also buy the album, or at least another album they've found.

Maybe it does not "affect" the superstars who have so much money they can't even count it, but I can not imagine the bulk of them are totally not affected... I know they make a great deal of their money during life shows. Piracy is not a "good" thing per-say. But, Eminem wouldn't make money off you buying his record. David Draiman (lead singer for Disturbed) was once interviewed about piracy and responded that he fully supported Napster(which was p2p) because it got people listening to their music and they don't make a dime off the record companies anyways. So, me, I'll always buy the album just to show support. You do help by boosting their numbers, even if they aren't directly profiting.

I saw this image on another forum, and it really upset me. Piracy is theft. You can rationalize it all you want, but at the end of the day most artists make content for the purpose of selling it and making money. If you take that content without paying them, you are stealing money from them. End of story.

Ya I read something similar here from an interview with Lady Gaga: + Show Spoiler +. She pretty much says artists can easily make 40 million to 100 million dollars by doing tours/concerts.

I don't think the picture says that piracy is good or not depriving the artists etc. of money but it is stating that due to the nature of the "product" (digital/IP) it should be handled a bit differently and this referred to as piracy, not as theft. However, the result is the same - loss of income/not generated income. Anyway, any further discussion will probably derail the thread so back on topic! I like the new album. I listened to it and have to say it is much better than Relapse. You can see the influence of the drugs on Em's creative performance for sure, so I am glad that he is back to "normal" again.
