Wings of Liberty Nostalgia
by wilted_kale
So I was going to make this really huge, involved post that covered everything before and during Wings, but it would have taken a full year to do what I wanted. I ended up choosing a few moments that I thought were sweet and animated a little picture for each one.
I would love to know other people's WoL nostalgia moments, so please post them if you are reading this.
Battle Report 2
Of the 4 battle reports, battle report 2 has stuck out the most in my brain. It had the merc compound for infantry upgrades (instead of the tech lab), the roach was 1 supply and had that crazy regen (yes plz), and infestors looked completely different. Even the queens looked different.
Overall, the games were slow paced and easier on my eyes. No one knew what they were doing and I liked it.
Dustin Browder
A couple years before release, in an interview with starcraftedDOTorg, the Browdermeister talked about wanting SC2 to be as easy as possible.
As many of us know, SC2 is now regarded as the hard game and every modern studio is trying to make things easier. But at the time, and through SC2's lifespan, it was often criticized by the sweat lords for being too ez.
Artosis
Artosis gets mothership rushed by a Blizz dev during the beta. It's a classic moment that wraps up everything about Artosis in a nice little bow.
Artosis started out playing Terran, quickly switched to Zerg, and ended up playing Protoss. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. My enemy is my friend.
IdrA
IdrA, not especially known for good sportsmanship, shakes Liquid'Nazgul's hand after losing to him 1-2 at MLG Dallas 2010.
There is something about how Nazgul leans more than halfway over the table to initiate the handshake. It feels like IdrA might not meet him. But there's mutual respect so all is well in the end.
NesTea
NesTea spine-crawler rushes anypro in GSL (May 2011).
I watched this live at 4 or 5 AM my time. It was something else when NesTea started pooping the creep to place the spines.
Protoss gameplay reveal
Dustin Browder introduces Protoss in a 20-minute video that plays out like a majestic soap opera.
There's something about the Dustmeister, the 2010 era, and this style of marketing that just hits the sweet spot. I thought it couldn't get any cooler and then the colossus showed up and went to town.
State of the Game
On episode 37 of the podcast, IdrA complains a lot about Zerg being weak while everyone else stays more cool-headed.
State of the Game likely couldn't be replicated today. It was very much about the specific people involved and how it was a little talk show before these things were everywhere.
I still go back and watch parts now and then.

The Idra versus MMA GG after MMA destroyed his own command centre
Squirtle Archon toileting Mvp’s army, literally the only win condition he had after Mvp played a really smart map-specific build and gameplan.
Mvp versus Squirtle game 7 also, holy fuck.
I think to this day the greatest finals we’ve ever seen in terms of intrigue and drama.
How many finals do you ever see a finely tuned strategy to a particular map, that we haven’t really ever seen, on for the opponent to adjust and pull off the only counter-play possible? That goes to the decider and the decider you see a cheese, a defence that’s adequate and then a ballsy doubling down of the cheese?
Just doesn’t happen often. Or ever really

Along with the last GSL finals run while relatively crippled with injuries it’s the difference between greatness and being really good at StarCraft for me
Mvp was something else, shame about the injuries

My biggest memory from WoL isn't a game.
It's the drama and hype that surrounded HuK moving from TL to EG.
EG did a great job with the countdown to the announcement, dropping hints over the course of a week (IIRC), and the reveal was definitely worth it.

I remember when I got access to the beta in WoL and just being in love with the UI design of the menus. How the whole interface was this Terran machine that you kinda got inside to play Starcraft 2 in.
It was so sick and well animated... and thinking up what the Zerg one and Protoss interfaces would look like in the expansions.... and then the whole UI concept got gutted and we got a pretty lifeless and uninspiring design that basically stuck... ahhh I miss when the future was exciting
The thing I miss the most about WoL though is the excitment around the game, esports and the fact that it really felt like the beginning of something huge. We knew there would be 2 more expansions and everyone was still figuring out the game...

I have nostalgia for several things in WoL.
HDH tourney,MLG and State ofthe Game. My favourite thing from WoL would definitely be Destiny and all the shit he would get into with Deezer and Combat-EX

Amen brother.
And yeah, immersive UI doesn't seem to be a huge priority anymore. RIP vibe lovers.

No, thank you kind sir! I felt really bad after posting because I just want things to go well. But it's so hard to know how to turn creativity into something people will care about. I am still trying to figure that out.

Yeah those are huge moments. When I went back—and I did a lot more research than is in this post—I tried to overturn some of the more obscure things. And some names that people may have forgotten. People who did well then fell off the map for one reason or another, like ST.Ace or TheStC (for example). Then there are the people that did extremely well and had vibrant personalities who just didn't play LotV, or barely did, like Sen (love Sen), or qxc, or any number of people.
The player density during the first few years of the game was just insane. If anyone has any interest in this era, I would encourage going back and checking out the sheer volume of shit that went on.
