Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant find what they believe to be an uncharted paradise. It looks really scary. Might be as good as the original Alien.

Wouldn't recommend watching the trailer tbh, it spoils too much (as do all modern trailers..)
Mixed expectations for this, worrying amount of horror cliche feel from the material released so far

+ Show Spoiler + What did you expect? That there won't be an alien in the alien franchise?
I guess they revealed it just to reassure all the people who saw Prometheus and were disappointed that there really weren't any xenomorphs there.

I am so hyped for this and I agree that the trailer show to much information. I hope this can and will be the best movie of 2017.

+ Show Spoiler +not really talking about there being a xeno, but why did they for instance have to show stuff like the shower scene death, the facehugger grab etc? If you watch the original alien trailer, it's a night and day difference - granted it would be weird to do the same with this one seeing as we (as you said) know a lot about what it will necessarily contain. but I really hate the way trailers these days generally give away too much

I'm really feeling the hype now, watched Prometheus yesterday, followed by me dreaming about aliens. I remember Alien 2, watching it when I was about 10, the horror still sits with me. Although it didn't seem to be much alien action in Prometheus, I loved every minute of it.

Jinro is calling it utter shit on twitter unfortunately

Hahaha! And I thought I was the only stupid kid, that did this It haunted me the following years. Made me kinda hate and love the movie at the same time.

Note: possibly some spoilerd in here.
I was disappointed in prometheus (though still enjoyed it enough to have watched more than once), so going in to this my expectations were low (ok, that's not entirely true, but they were tampered).
After 20 minutes I was seriously considering whether I should ask the people I was watching with (mc, stc, top) if we should leave.
The pacing is uneven, the build up slow and meandering without actually providing any depth to more or less any character (partially because there are just too many of them). So much of the dialogue felt clumsy, as if intended purely to let the viewer know that oh these guys are married etc.
The circumstances of how they end up on the planet are utterly unrealistic but I dont mind, I dont need realism in an alien movie (though not being completely retarded would be nice).
Brushing aside the stupidity of exploring an unknown planet wearing hiking gear without any protection, the protagonists compound this with a disrespect for local flora that I wouldn't even show while walking around in a forest on earth. There are so many ways to achieve the same thing without the guy literally sticking his head inches away from suspicious looking crap and poking at it.
Initial alien scenes i felt were shot very unimpressively... they did not feel like they had any weight to them, and this might sound petty but I felt the sound fx added to this immaterial feeling... also impossible to see anything with the camera work.
I would like to really rage a bit about a few plot points but it seems a bit too spoilery, so instead I'll just say that a lot of the trailer and prologue footage is shoe horned into this in a really, really awkward and unsatisfying manner. Every interesting bit of prometheus kind of ends up handwaved away in a few seconds of exposition... (flashbacks and dialogue worthy of a low budget tv show catching you up on the last episode)
Again would like to say more but let me just encapsulate it in this spoiler free statement: every scene in the trailers you might have seen and thought "wow that's kind of dumb but maybe in context...".
In context it's way dumber. Like plummeting new heights of incredulity dumb.
Ultimately the movie feels as if it doesn't want to be an alien movie but rather some kind of religiously themed body horror flick with some a.i parts (and I use horror very loosely here because there are 0 parts of the movie that even attempt to be scary, any moment of potential tension is just played at too fast a pace to amount to anything).
It seems to have looked at the alien franchise and determined, for who knows what reason, that alien 4 is where the good ideas were.
Also there's a completely unnecessary martial arts esque fight scene. Who wants this in an alien movie? Please tell me.
Fassbender is the only bright part of the movie, though less so than in prometheus (not his fault, this movie decided to shine a light on every mystery to expose its utter boringness leaving not much to work with).
There is one good scene at the very end but that is literally it. Massive waste of time, acting talent and franchise.
You could probably make an interesting movie out of this premise but using the alien franchise as your vehicle is like trying to make a star wars movie set in medieval france. Without light sabers.
+ Show Spoiler +I am utterly convinced that the reason Elizabeth Shaw is not in this movie is because she (or rather, Noomi Rapace) read the script once and then said "you know what, just kill my character off, I'm out of here".

Hmm, interesting FA. I haven't really enjoyed an Aliens movie since #3. Number 4 was OK but more of an action flick and felt pretty formulaic.
Prometheus was interesting but it felt like it tried to do too much in 2 hours. Honestly can't remember large sections of it, other than it felt too obtuse at the time (this might say more about me though than the movie!).
Reviews of this movies I've seen say it's generally good but not for everyone. I'll give it a look but don't have big expectations.
The Alien and Terminator series are two of the best ever but have been butchered in recent years by shameless cash grab sequels. I hope Covenant doesn't repeat this and it's a genuinely interesting addition to the lore. Apparently Ridley Scott has signed on to do at least three new Alien movies so will be interesting to see where he takes it.

Sounds exactly like me (1, 2 great, 3 is fine, 4 not very good, prometheus disappointing but some interesting questions raised at least).

the way the Alien looked in 3 just ugh. Even looking past the human/alien thing

The only relevant Alien movies were 1 and 3.
Covenant is shit.
Edit:
Watch Life instead. It's more Alien than Alien:Covenant...
Edit 2: Or, if you really crave intellectual sci-fi thriller/horror go with Europa Report.

2 is the more entertainment of all the saga, 1 was very good, the others were shit.

Europa Report is actually surprisingly decent. Haven't seen Life yet but it's on my 'to watch' list.
Also, what's wrong with Aliens? It's not the same type of movie as 1 and 3 but it's a bloody excellent film all the same.
EDIT: I'm taking a silly amount of pleasure in watching Covenant's IMDB score slowly tank from its initial 8.6 shill-score. At 7.6 yesterday, now 7.2.

Aliens was a good film, but in a totally different genre. That's why I excluded it from my list.

overall it is exactly what i expected, I just wished it was more Prometheus than alien.
anyone who is expecting the tradition alien horror genre will be disappointed. anyone expecting the world to expand further will be left unsatisfied.
personally i love the addition of prometheus world setting with the engineer and AI to the franchise. There's only so much you can do with a monster that everyone knows what it is capable of, what it looks like and what it is weak against. By the third alien film, the formula already felt repetitive and nothing was added to the franchise other than a good movie

Prometheus could have been great with just a slight dial back on the stupid dial.....
