I wanted to see if any other TL'ers have played much Rise of Nations during the last 14 years. I played while growing up, however my brother bought it for me on Steam about a year ago. I used to play a lot of SC1 and SC2 so I decided to try out RoN multiplayer for something different.
It is a fascinating game when I compare it to SC. Scouting, multi tasking, APM and use of hotkeys are very important at maintaining an edge. However the tech tree, rare resources and city/territory mechanics make it a very deep strateegic game to play, where there is an element of "chess" to your decisions. There are constant trade offs you need to make where you need to prioritise army, economy, resources and positioning on the map.
The most popular forms of the game are 1v1 standard (similar to starcraft, default settings with quick aging, high intensity) and 2v2/3v3/4v4 nomad random nations (slower paced but every game is unique and team work is necessary, a lot of fun). The community is still going strong and maximum wait for a quality game is usually 5-10 minutes.
If you are someone like me who wanted to try another RTS, i recommend you log in and give it a go.
If you want to learn more about what the game looks like:

Typical multiplayer game (4v4 Nomad random nations w/ commentary)
Did anyone here used to play? I encourage anyone who might want some nostalgia or just to play something different to log in and join some Nomad matches. As you can see I am quite passionate about it because it is so much fun for any RTS player.
I played a lot of rise of nations back in the day, though mainly dicking around in single player. Seeing these video kinda makes me wanna go back to it
I really enjoyed playing that game years ago! I only played the single-player though. I also have the extended edition on steam, but I haven't had a chance to install it yet.
I love how while Age of Empires 1 was previewed as a cross between Warcraft and Civilization, Rise of Nations went a step further to be a cross between Age of Empires and Civilization. I thought it was a more polished and elegant game than Empire Earth even though its time range was a bit smaller.
Yes very similar to a real time civilisation. Border push becomes a real issue as you can only build building s within your own territory. Russia has a crazy border push bonus and extra attrition which makes them really hard to attack
I AM KEEN. PLEASE PLEASE ANYONE to play Rise of Nations extended edition. i love this game but i never got to play online...its always everything empty. please anyone?

Plenty of games to join! Just join a nomad game in the lobby
I would go as far to say that the best Ron players are as skilled as the best Starcraft players in terms of their strategy, macro and micro.
Watching a pro Ron player is reminiscent of boxer in his prime
I had an urge recently to get back to playing RoN (ironically, after seing the AoE2 thread pop up) and had a blast going through the campaign once then playing a dozen or so MP games. Getting the early game build orders isn't hard, but I've had a lot of difficulty keeping up with macro and figuring out when to boom and when to make stuff, never mind stuff like raiding (which I can only make work very early on).

Are you playing nomad settings?
Yeah it’s a very simple game to play but complex to master, but that’s what makes it so much fun as it’s never ending improvement.
There are a few default strategies, mostly going for a wonder, going for 150 eco fast attack, going for 100 eco rush and going for science 2/3 before age. All map, nation and team mate dependent

Yeah, I usually mess around the 2v2 and 3v3 nomad in noob/inter rooms. I don't think I've wanted to play serious 1v1 rts since SC2 WoL, though I have gone in once or twice for the heck of it.

nice. we'll be releasing a new tutorial series soon so make sure you keep an eye out on the channel. it will cover everything in nomad from age 1 to age 4, hotkeys, army positioning, army attacks, etc
