"Spelunky is an action adventure game centered around the exploration of a series of caves while collecting treasure, saving damsels in distress, and dodging traps. Spelunky draws heavily from La Mulana for its visual styling, character design, gameplay elements and general mechanics, and adds elements from the roguelike genre, using randomly-generated levels, being a dungeon crawl, lacking any savepoints, having frequent and easy deaths, and having discovery mechanics. It draws equally from the 2D platformer genre, including real-time interactions with enemies. Version 1.0 was released on 1st September 2009, along with confirmation that the game would be coming to Xbox Live Arcade in 2010."

Spelunky has intentionally difficult, but rewarding gameplay. I guarantee that you won't be able to beat it without dieing at least 100 times. In order to decrease the learning curve, I'll give you some beginner tips:
1. Always check below before you jump. If you can't see the ground below you, then crouch down until you spot somewhere safe to land. You take falling damage from long falls... and that's only the best, worst case scenario. Other cases, like falling on spikes or man-eating plants for example, are instant death. Also, try to jump on enemies to negate falling damage. So take your time and spot your landing, carelessness is the easiest way to die.
2. One way to trigger arrow-traps when you aren't holding a item is to take out a bomb or a rope and stand on the edge of a platform. This will force the spelunker to drop the item without activating it. Then, once the trap is disarmed, you can drop down and retrieve the bomb or rope and put it back in your inventory.
3. Spikes do not damage you if you walk over them. Jumping on them is a different story...
4. Damsels give you an extra heart if you take them to the end of the level alive.
5. The Eye that you get from the locked chest in the first area allows you to see jewels in the tiles. It is also a special item used in later levels... assuming that you can stay alive for that long.
6. Always try to carry something that you can throw. This gives you a ranged attack option.
These are only a few tips that I can think of off the top of my head. There is plenty more to find out, so start playing and learn from your mistakes.

Haha, reminds me of Spelunker by Broderbund for the NES. God that game was beyond frustrating.

Hah, Spelunky I finished the game on a previous version after like .. 300 tries. Really fun, but what I like the most about this game, is all the reactions that can happen between the creatures, traps, and explosions, which can cause hilarious deaths.

I just have to bump this.
I recently discovered this game and planned on making a thread exactly like this one for it, but alas, there already is one.
Since this thread seems to have been buried quickly without much recognition, I can only advise anyone who likes hard games (this is a starcraft site, hello?!) to play this game!
There is so much fun (and frustration, yay) to be had with this. Just try it out, you might find your next favorite minigame.
and btw, spelunky.wikia.com helps a lot if you don't now what an item/enemy etc does

The randomly generated levels are exactly what makes this game so great. It prevents the game from becoming too repetitive- and i have no idea what he means by poor controls.
Why not try the game before adopting a negative opinion? It's free after all..

I've had this sitting on my harddrive for a while now, and whenever I'm not in the mood for 1v1ing, I give it a go and try to beat my high score. I've only gotten up to level 3 so far

I agree. The randomness of the levels is great. Sure, it's not very balanced from a "competitive" point of view (lol) but who cares, this is what makes this game fun. And I too don't know what the "poor controls" are. It's perfect to me.

I only tried this game a little on the PC but it is fantastic on the 360 (it just recently came out on the 360 a few weeks ago). I'm not sure what the differences are between the 2 versions besides the different art styles though. One thing I can say is that it controls much better with a controller than with a keyboard.
Spelunky is the best game I've played in a longass time.
Currently I'm trying to complete the final task for the tunnel man to unlock a tunnel to the 4th world, and it's pretty hard :\
I think what makes this game so great is how it demands the player to not only master the mechanics, but also how it trains players to think about situations critically and learn how to quickly improvise to master situations. This game is so rewarding every time it forces you to quickly solve a new problem (which there are plenty of due to the procedurally generated worlds) and you solve it correctly or go on a long improvised run or something similar to that. There are so many great intricacies to all the enemies and mechanics too. I love it so much.
One thing I'd like to say though is that the ice world is pretty underwhelming compared to the jungle world and cave world. the ice levels seem much shorter and with a lot less stuff going on in them. they are still fun but don't have as much reflex demand as the jungle level. also I only got into the temple levels 3 different times but they seem pretty cool albeit with a lot more recycled content than the other levels. fuck i came SO CLOSE to bringing the key to the tunnel man 2 different times but then fell to my death in on 3-2 and 3-3 with a bunch of spare lives/bombs/ropes :\
but oh well. the game is so great at not discouraging you from playing becuase it never really feels repetitive. You can draw a lot of comparisons to dark souls in terms of both games offering the same sort of rewarding gameplay, but I think spelunky is a lot easier to get into because it's not about memorizing levels and layouts but memorizing situations and applied problem-solving (as the same set of obstacles are always presented to you in different ways). Also death isn't really that big of a problem in spelunky because it doesn't mean you lost so much progress and progress itself isn't really that big of a deal. each level only takes .5 to 5 minutes to complete anyway so even if you die you're not really set that far back.
if you like rewarding games, you need to play this game.

Speluky is a great game, also very difficult to beat
It's like the mini roguelike of platformers
|
I really love this game.
two tips for new players that help a lot - in world one, you've probably realized you can trigger the arrow traps by throwing things in front of them. If you have nothing else, you can drop a rope (which won't cause the rope to deploy, so you can pick it back up again) and pop the trap that way.
Everywhere, but especially in world two, if you don't see any way down without taking fall damage, 1) pull out a rope 2) crouch in front of a ledge 3) use it. this will cause the rope to pin itself to the wall right in front of you so you can climb down safely.

Btw if you actually want to beat this game
You need to learn how to steal from shopkeepers without getting them perma angry
Either by using a rock (non fatal) or a man eating plant to nick their shotgun (important, best weapon in game) And possibly nicking a jetpack (not required, but pretty much a win condition for the average player)
After you're done with that, its important to learn how to get close to infinite health using the blood trick and then you're set to beat the game :D
|
yeah i figured out the plant trick today. huge! by my standards if I have a cape and a shotgun I'm basically a big baller.

Bumping this to announce that the world record was broken. In a marathon-like session streamed for 7 hours! The guy went to collect clean almost single possible points. Doing only few slight mistake in the beginning as he was ready to stop streaming but then he realized this was going to be the run of the century, getting a plasma gun in a chest on the first level and a jet pack right in the second level's shop...
It is really sick! http://www.twitch.tv/bananasaurus_rex/c/3763690
|
I always keep dieing in this game on lvl 1 and then when I finally reached lvl 2 I didn't have a bomb.
I was sad.
|
Damn the twitch player keeps getting worse. That video is completely unenjoyable due to the permanent stuttering. :/
|
yep. I don't know if it helps to pause and let it buffer.
|
That used to fix it for me as well, but not any more it seems. Kinda bummed out cause I love this game and watching it get broken.

would be good if you could use an actual controller and not ONLY be compatible with xbox ones ...

You can map any controller you have. I use the d3mon controller myself and used this to map it. I had way more games mapped but I lost the file
