Hi, I've been thinking about getting something similar to an ipod, devoted to playing music (I don't need to watch videos on it) but don't want an ipod itself.

I don't know many mp3 players out there and I need your recommendations

Things I am looking for:
- Decent amount of storage space. 3~4 GB
- Nice design
- Stable machine that works for at least 2 years
- Must be able to display other language fonts
- Budget: Anywhere between $100 to $200 dollars
- Non used.

Recommend me, thanks

the walkmen kind of things from sony look nice, but they're expensive for the right design.

Creative tends to have these cookie cutter players that are fairly cheap, but you're not going to get anything interesting out of them.

The zune is starting to be a decent player, but the real killer for all of the above is the software. Itunes is one of the best mp3 organizing desktop software.

Ioono i'd say get what ever supports his foreign languages he wants probably Japanese and Korean cuz everyone loves a _____. Nice one about some of the creative players is they have the crystalizer and a surround sound emulator on the device it make things sound nice but drains the batter like 3 6 times faster lol.

scan through this, I bet you will find something you'd like and then try and find it cheaper through out other stores.

I am wondering, why not an ipod?

I'm a big fan of the Creative Zen series, it's got great sound quality, supports foreign languages, has FM radio (big plus) and you can record off of the radio (bigger plus). They're not too expensive either.

Yeah i have a creative zen x-fi 32gig has wifi it's great for streaming music around the doom off the wifi and trasnfering music. It's also comes with great headphones that come with 3? i believe different ear sizes so they aren't too hard on your ears. I think the 16gig verson is in his price range.

I skimmed through it and for some reason, I get turned off by Zune. I didn't like a lot of the stuff that BestBuy was selling

I don't want an ipod because this is actually a gift for someone and she doesn't like ipods. She thinks everyone has one, which is true imo.

Can anyone tell me if the Zen series is reliable? You guys make it sound like its really nice, but I don't want to end up with crappy hardware & software

the one i have =D
More Vids on youtube if you care to search.
Excellent internal firmware support + customize forum: http://www.clixhere.net/forums.php

Giant Edit:
First: YAY FOR NO IPOD. Good for you for actually doing research before buying a shitty conformist mp3 player (well shitty might be too harsh). Fucking everyone has one of those these days. I tunes sucks too i have no idea why people like to use that resource hog. Winamp ftw. /fanboyrant

Things you are looking for:
- Decent amount of storage space. 3~4 GB
> Yes the clix2 comes in 2/4/8 GB i believe, i have an 8GB and i keep Advent children on it so i can look at the pretty action scenes every now and then and still have lots of room for my choice selection of music. CHECK.
- Nice design
> hands down what sold me in the first place. The design is incredibly simple and sleek, no instructions needed, just 5 mins with it and you will know how it works inside out. No buttons is a huge plus, and pressing the sides feel waaaay better than the fucking thumbwheel. The hold button is tucked out of the way, and is quite important because if you dont put it on hold you might press the sides of the screen by accident while its in your pocket and that will jump songs. Volume and power off button are also placed on the rim. Feels very natural when i reach in my pocket blind to change volume/power on off. Hold button doesn't lock volume, but thats ok because its really hard to press down the volume buttons by accident. In fact this is a plus for me, i always like to adjust volume esp if someone starts to talk to me. And proportionally speaking, the screen is fucking huge, because....well its essentially all screen + small thin border. CHCHCHFUCKINGCHECK.
- Stable machine that works for at least 2 years
> i've had mine for 1.5 years and going now and its still as good as the first day. The condomy protective case that comes with it adds to the grip and makes it all soft and felt like. I'm also constantly dropping it and so far so good. CHECK.
- Must be able to display other language fonts
> 100% capable, i can read chinese/japanese/korean all on it. But it is based off of the IDV3 (or w/e its called) tag. Which i can change/modify in winamp. CHECK.
- Budget: Anywhere between $100 to $200 dollars.
> The 8GB cost me $170 USD ircc. And that was 1.5 years ago. Prices might have dropped by now and if you are looking for a 2 or 4 GB instead, they should be cheaper still. CHECK.

BONUSES:
- DRAG AND DROP. It comes with some software thingy but i dont use it at all.
- Displaying Album art is awesome =D but configuring it/editing all songs for it is a pain. I would look for an external program to do so but i'm lazy.
- Radio.
- Video + Slideshow (YES deMOTIVATIONAL PICTURES FTW)
- Voice recording
- ENTIRELY CUSTOMIZABLE INTERFACE. This is gold. You can download and import skins for your iriver clix. They can even change color for you depending on the day of the week. I currently have a sketch pad looking arty theme, but the guy in the vid had some nice gfx going.
- Flash games. Nuff said.
- Good fan community support. There are quite a number of people skinning/making flash games/twiddling with the firmware, so it allows for high amounts of customization. I dont really browse the forum anymore, but when i first got it i downloaded a number of stuff useful from there. such as a more efficient video encoder and skins/games ect.
- Forum FAQ is here: http://www.clixhere.net/clix-faqs-guides/941-must-read-faq-list.html
- Battery life lasts me anywhere from 3-6 days of usage. I dont remember the precise number of hours, but i think it lasts longer than an ipod?
- Black. Sleek. Nuff said.
- Bragging rights. (OOOOH ITS SOOOO COOL)

Minor Annoyances:
- You have to charge it from USB chord, and cant play music from the player while you are doing so.
- Sometimes i forget to put player on hold, and accidentally press buttons in the pocket causing it to skip songs.
- Fork out a few extra bucks to buy the protective plastic coating, its worth it. Now i can throw pens in my pocket and not risk scratching it.
- Deciding between UMS/MSC in the settings. I eventually settled with UMS and was happy ever since. (really its not as big a deal as i made it out to be)
- Previously i was a proud owner of a creative MuVo (cheap, durable, best bangforbuck imo). And the one thing i miss about that is that i could pull it out and plug it right into the computer as a flash drive. Now if i want to do that with the clix, i have to bring the cable along. Oh well.

Check out Cnet. Reviews:
http://reviews.cnet.com/best-flash-memory-mp3-players/?tag=rb_content;contentNav

Highly Recommend the iRiver Clix2 (theres a first generation one but why would you want that)

Cowon s9 SO EASILY
http://www.jetmall.net/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=479

The 32gb version is coming out very very soon, meaning the price of the 16gb version will probably go down a significant amount.

Do your research, compare the s9 to ipods, zunes, iriver clix, samsung p3, etc.
Trust me, you will be amazed at cowon's incredible audio quality (considered the best audio quality on the market by nearly all who know cowon). The ipod's audio quality is absolute trash compared to the s9 or even the d2/+, ask anyone who has used both. The AMOLED screen blows the TFT screens on all the other players out the window, videos look so bright and well-defined on it.

It's a touch screen, btw.

edit: oh yeah, and its rated 55 hours audio playback battery life compared to most others being <15 hours
Two in harmony surpasses one in perfection.

Who cares if it looks cool?

I think durability/ cost/ storage are the most important factors to consider in this case.

I was in ur shoes. My thought is, technology is growing fast and 3-4 gb music player is not something u wanna spend 100s of dollars on. And spending 50 more dollars for half an inch screen is ridiculous. You want something to use to listen to. But if you value sound quality, you don't want to get something like ipod shuffle either.

I suggest sansa clip. Look for refurbished deals or search ebay for 4gb player. You should be able to get one around 50 dollars. It actually provides decent sound. I'd recommend getting decent earphones like yuin pk3 (~50). Now you got urself a nice portable system.

I agree with the suggestions of looking into Cowons. Sound quality and format support is unbeatable there.

Check out the head-fi.org forum for more info. The people there know tons about this stuff. A few days ago, I was in the same boat you're in and eventually picked the Sony Walkman S639.
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

Here's a direct link to their portable music/video player subforum:
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f15/

Edit:
The three most popular brands at head-fi seem to be Sansa, Cowon, and Sony (besides Apple iPods). The following models all supposedly have very good sound quality.

For Sansa, you have two options: Clip or Fuze. They're known for having great sound quality yet being very inexpensive.
Sansa Fuze comes in 2 gb, 4gb, and 8gb.
Sansa Clip comes in 2 gb and 4 gb.

Cowon options are the D2 or iAudio 7. These are more expensive than the Sansa ones.
Cowon D2 comes in 4gb, 8gb, and 16 gb. It has a touch screen that takes up most of the player. *Warning: it's actually a lot smaller than it looks in the picture in the link. Scroll down the page and find the dimensions.
Cowon iAudio 7 doesn't have the big screen the D2 has. It's more of a music player.

Sony has a lot of models, so it's hard to cover them all. There's the E, A, and S series. The E series is the cheapest of the three and lack some features the other one has. The latest A series has bluetooth support, while the latest S series has built-in noise canceling. That's the gist of it, but you'll have to look into it to get a better idea.

sansa clip is the best pure music player available. small, simple, durable, and way below your budget. also has great sound quality, if not the best. take the money you save and get some nice headphones to go with it.

other good options are:
creative (used to be really awesome, now just average/above average)
zune (much better than it used to be)
cowon (notorious for great sound quality, and the new s9 is fucking SEXY)

how reasonable is it to eat off wood instead of your tummy?
