[GOM] 3, 2, 1... Blastoff!
March 28th, 2009 23:16 GMT
The Averatec|Intel GOM Classic is beginning its third season March 29th, 2009. The players will be competing for a grand prize of 40 million won. Second place will recieve 15 million won, third and fourth will recieve 5 million won each. And all the action will be brought to us, live, by Nick "Tasteless" Plott and "SuperDanielMan" Lee.
The match list for season 3 is 124 players strong, a reduction from last season's 180 players, yet the field is as wide open as it was in season one. The reason? MBCGame HERO, OnGameNet SPARKYZ, eSTRO and inexplicably, SK Telecom T1 have all decided to pass on participating. This disappointing news means, of course, that last season's champ, Bisu, will not be defending his title!
Boasting Kespa's support and a large prize pool, it's difficult to comprehend why some teams-- particularly SK Telecom T1-- are refusing to participate, but even as questions about GOM's snubbing cloud the air around this tournament, I can't help but get excited about the players that are participating. Will JangBi finally earn first place? Will Jaedong avoid the same pitfalls that eliminated him last season? Does sAviOr have it in him to return to form, despite uninspiring showings in other 2009 leagues? We'll soon see!
On March 29, PDT(PST+1) 02:00, the round of 128 kicks off with games featuring ToSsGirL, IdrA, Rage and ClouD. They'll be facing off against practical unknowns Casey of KHAN, Trap of STX, PerfectMan of OZ, and Fire of Stars. The maps for these games will be Tau Cross, Destination and Andromeda. Visit GOMtv.net for a full (if visibly inaccurate) bracket.
Please take note that the "round of 128" is confusingly a round of 64 players. On April 5th, after the first round of play, 28 "semi-seeds" (for lack of a better term) will enter the tournament and compete for the chance to play the "real seeds" on April 12th. So, basically:
Round 1: 64/2 = 32 Round 2: (32+28)-28 = 32 Round 3: (32+32)/2 = 32 Round 4: 32/2 = 16 etc.
If that explanation is too convoluted to follow (and I'm not saying it isn't), take a look at the bracket on GOMtv.net and it'll make a bit more sense.
So, get ready, 'cuz this is about to takeoff!

OGN Sparkyz and MBC Hero are afraid of the new league maybe? (ogn = osl, mbc = msl). That makes sense in that it would be very coincidental the two teams who own the two other leagues are not participating. Skt is weird though.

The lack of some high-profile teams is surely going to hurt the future of this league...let's hope this doesn't continue. The GSL is great stuff.

I'm not sure savior can beat anyone not named Bisu

So is GOM floundering now? I hope they're making enough enough money to continue, especially since there's an English stream.
MBC and OGN not participating is logical, given their sponsors. But ESTRO and T1's lack of participation makes it clear that GOM is not as important the proleagues in their mind.
Oh well, at least Khan and CJ are both participating. So I have plenty of rooting interest.

No T1, No boxer Does anyone have an explanation why T1 is not participating? OGN, MBC and eSTRO make sense but not T1.
