My aim in translations is to mirror the Korean interview, and writings; and more specifically to resemble the words the Progamers(or anyother person) actually said. I rely heavily on the intelligence of TL members reading this translation to infer what they actually meant; not necessarily meaning that those incidents occur very often. So, I try as hard as I can to refrain myself from translating with my personal analyzation. If I can offer some additional information, I include it at the end with (*) marks next to it. So come across an awkward phrase, or figure of speech, give it time, because that is what Korean progamer said. I aim to provide a 'clean' translations, that are verbose, sometimes nonsensical, awkward in wording, and not adhering to the normal english we hear everyday, hoping we all can get a glimpse of the vibe on what they are actually saying.

Translator's introduction.

Oh yes! It's sylent's column!
Well, I wouldn't blame you if you are not as excited as I was when I saw this new column. I will skip the introduction to who sylent is with this link.

http://teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=44863

Just to assure you, this time I have personally asked sylent for the permission to translate this article. So by no means will this article be deleted like the last translated column originally written by kimera. Since, technically this article is not from PGR(from where I have promised I won't do anymore translations of their forum articles), but it is from sylent's personal blog.

So enjoy, and drop a 'hi' if you'd like to,
in sylent's personal blog(korean).

[sylent's B-rated column] is minority column produced from a frank and simple conversation by sylent(Park Jonghwa) who likes starcraft more than the Worldcup Soccer, and who cheers for an 'all-in' stunningly radical strategy rather than a dull mass unit fights; and by Wangil(Kim Hyunjoon) who also like starleague no less than sylent, but who protests about the importance of balance on maps and within the starcraft races, hoping that a reliable and stalwart playing style will set itself in place.

[sylent's B-rated Column] Looking at(*1) Lee Yoonyeol, again.

At one time in the past, there was a game enticing many couples to 'Oh-Rak-Sir'(*2). <Finding Different Parts in the Pictures>. The game <Finding Different Parts in the Pictures> was a big hit at that time, beguiling players' vision, making the participants focus more and more in search of the deliberately changed parts of two pictures. The eyes have already caught the obvious differences between the two pictures, but the brain which compartmentalizes inducement according to its severity, does not maximize(initialize) the difference. For that, it is easy to miss that 'slight difference', without focusing, focusing a bit more after, and focusing even again.

We accept there exists a blind spot when it comes to vision without much controversy. However, we are not likely to think there also exists a 'blind spot' in terms of recognition; The possibility where the same phenomenon can be perceived differently according to environment one went through, configurative one holds, retained knowledge, and current mood.

So, we have to look at Lee Yoonyeol, again.

Looking at Lee Yoonyeol, once.

The old fans who have watched starcraft leagues since the days of 'Ssamzzang' Lee Giseok, flying his barrack to the hill behind the opponent's base and harassing the workers in <Showdown>, probably acknowledges how fascinating the 'Emperor' Lim Yohwan, 'Prodigy' Lee Yoonyeol, and 'Monster' Choi Yunsung were, and how current 'Maestro' Ma Jaeyoon is such an admirable player.

There cleary existed an era where Lee Yoonyeol swept off the map with crazy force, and dominated every opponent. An era did exist where the minute Lee Yoonyeol landed the command center in his frontyard, the outcome of the match was predestined; An era where he fiddled inside the opponents' base with a mere squad of marine/medic, and decimated all drones with only two vultures. It was an era where everyone said no one would defeat him; at least all before Choi Yunsung appeared.

At Lee Yoonyeol's peak, after containing the frontyard expansion, he swept the battlefield like 'Tornado'. Lee Yoonyeol's door were kept shut against what ever assault attempts, and the minute Lee Yoonyeol did open it for himself, uncontrollable amount of forces poured out and out. The 'bonjwa(*3) Lee Yoonyeol as we remember him, is always just that.

However, the times have changed, and Lee Yoonyeol evolved. Now, he aims to lead the game flow with catchy strategies. Inevitably for that, he sometimes loses, and wins. He wins often, but there are times when it's just too close. The matches are certainly more exciting, but we do not feel the sheer dominance. So looking back at Lee Yoonyeol's days of 'bonjwa', he now seems relatively diminished. But what if we were to shift the paradigm of looking at Lee Yoonyeol by just a little?

Looking at Lee Yoonyeol, again.

The natural lineage of Terran Lee Yoonyeol - Seo Jihoon - Choi Yunsung, who always won 'just by doing what they always have done before', vanished long ago by the many revolutionary Zerg and Protoss. One adamant stalwart Terran, Jun Sangwook, continues the heritage, but he can not reach that pinnacle in an individual league; partly because of the imperturbable rival Ma Jaeyoon, but also because he 'does what he always have done before' in an extremely crucial moment.

Lee Yoonyeol discarded himself to win. And, he has found a new self. He triumphs by inducing more dynamic, more intensifying, more perplexing battles. If we forget Lee Yoonyeol in his days of 'bonjwa', or, rather, remember those days and carefully compare that to current days, he can not be more exciting than he already is. Disregarding the equation 'Lee Yoonyeol being awesome = Lee Yoonyeol I remember', and witnessing the new Lee Yoonyeol creating new history step by step, he can not do any better than he is already doing.

Although he had attained the Golden Mouse, calling for as much praise as much criticism, the incident did not offer him any new insight on his evaluation. He was inadvertently discouraged by the fans of 'Emperor' on the days of his prime, and by the fans of 'Monster' on his downhill paths, and by the fans of 'Maestro' in his strife to come alive once again.

I do not think mediocre skill should be considered fine; but even more so, the fine skill should not be degraded. So, I feel unfortunate for the fans of Lee Yoonyeol, and for Lee Yoonyeol who may be hurt by the fans of others; even though he has restructured himself with 'variety', who endured the mockery of being once called a sleeping pill in those times where he insisted on 'one factory expansion'; even though he is such a great player in a slightly different perspective.

If Lee Yoonyeol meets Ma Jaeyoon in the finals, I believe Lee Yoonyeol also has a chance. The maps are smiling for Terran. However, despite the fact the maps might nudge him to triumph, it will not accentuate the value of the fourth league championship. Because ... it always has been like that.(*4)

One line summary.
Anyways, the current leader in Terran is Lee Yoonyeol.

=====

(*1)Looking at - I intentionally applied literal translation in this sentence, because it is such a critical word throughout this column. The word, 보다 means to look, and in this column serves its meaning as evaluating, considering, and/or contemplating. Such a simple word yet containing a broad range of meanings, which I believe sylent has intentionally chosen to suggest many different approaches we(the readers) can take in thinking about Lee Yoonyeol, again.

(*2)'Oh-Rak-Sir' - It is an earlier version of PCbang. It had not computers, but big bulky game stations; The same game stations we see(saw) in comic book store, or in stationary stores. Depending on its size, they had from 10~100 game stations in one Oh-Rak-Sir.

(*3)bonjwa -
http://teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=49138
bonjwa - This word really is an ugly Korean slang, neither structurely nor grammatically coherent(it just doesn't make sense), but nonetheless used widely to mean the 'best'. Among progamers themselves, Ma Jaeyoon is called 'bonjwa' in a friendly tone to acknowledge his skill is exceptional, but not necessarily emphasizing he is unbeatable. We all know how every progamer is full of pride in his own skill. We, the normal civilians however, can freely use this word to describe Ma Jaeyoon is in fact invincible.

(*4) I feel very uncomfortable adding and unnecessary additional footnote to this very concisely well written column, but to avoid any misinterpretation, if you can't quite cleary understand the last paragraph(more specifically the last two sentences), you have not fully understood the whole column. I will not state the obvious(or elusive) conclusion, for it is rude to the original writer. You are welcome to discuss it, but please do give the chance to others to fully appreciate the original writer's(sylent's) initial intention.

Think about the pro's who are multi-generational and still competitive, NaDa is the oldest and most successful. He once boasted that he would be the first 30 year old progamer. While mathmatics may prevent him from achieving that (Boxer is much older) I think that NaDa's talents are surely better.

While Koreans might think froeigners don' know much about BW, I think TL is representative of the Korean attitudes as well. Many of our own forum members wrote off NaDa even after his OSL victory, because he wasn't the NaDa of old, dominating his opponents mercilessly. The columnist is exactly right, he has had to change his game, but in essense little has changed. His personal tragedies aside, his cyclical career has mirrored that of many other pros, except that he has come out far ahead of them.

In my opinion, a player like NaDa has so little to prove right now, but must yet again prove himself by beating Savior. If he fails to beat Savior, there will be even more hue and cry about his percieved failure. Only in the era of Savior would that accomplishment be diminished because of the zerg's absense.

bonjwa = the shit ?
Yea that looks just like Kang Min... amazing game sense... and uses mind games well, but has the micro of a washed up progamer.

said a lot of things, but really was lacking in support of his point, which is that nada is doing something innovative and great. sure there may be a bias against his current form when compared to his old form, but i dont really know why he is being a rising legend once again. the guy said, "look here" really well but the "here" is not there.

Now, he aims to lead the game flow with catchy strategies.

Lee Yoonyeol discarded himself to win. And, he has found a new self. He triumphs by inducing more dynamic, more intensifying, more perplexing battles.

Generalizations which lead to...

witnessing the new Lee Yoonyeol creating new history step by step, he can not do any better than he is already doing.

Why? Maybe NaDa is being put in his position precisely because of his former glory?

Thanks rinizim.
Sylent's Column is really nice.
For me NaDa is one of the best Terran right now.
Like Sylent said "Anyways, the current leader in Terran is Lee Yoonyeol".
Thats why is so important not to diminish Korean Progamers effort.
Being a Korean Progamer is really hard.
And each one of them are there because they strived really hard for it.
NaDa deserves the #2 Spot on KeSPA Rankings.

First off, thank you for the translation, you did a really nice job.

It is weird to see the almost "bandwagon" type process that goes on with the professional gamers. Although the actual winning and losing also follows this trend (which ultimately sets up the trend of the following), it is surprising that someone like NaDa does not get more respect than he already does.

The part about NaDa's prime, downhill, and rebirth is extremely sickening mainly because of its truth. For a guy who is the only Korean to ever win 3 OSL championships, he is continually over looked. I pose the question to everyone: Why doesn't NaDa get the respect he deserves and what would it take for many of you to consider him the greatest of all time?

I have lately appreciated Nada's diversity and mentioned it lately, and I believe that is the main source of his strenght right now. Nada re-invented himself similar to Boxer in 2004 or so.
My opinions differ, but I can respect Nada fans for their praise...

I still think his brackets are easy. When has Nada crashed with a big name and pulled ahead...
Anytime is the only one I can recall from late.

Anyways, I guess what I admire most about Nada is his mental toughness which can be mistaken for arrogance, but I believe it is a healthy act for him to remain atop his game.

Either way, I'm never a Nada fan ~_~
