Week 3 Lookback
by Waxangel
Was it all just a dream? Last season, the Proleague royalty of SK Telecom T1 and KT Rolster were overthrown, with the middle-class rising up in a rapidly changing world. It looked like the revolution still had some fire left in it during the first few weeks of the new Proleague, with CJ Entus keeping its newly won position on top of the pack. However, week three might have signaled a harsh crash back to reality. In an instant, the old nobility of SKT and KT Rolster rose back to the top of the table, tied for first place with 4 - 1 records. Their superstars are hitting their stride, while their benches are some of the deepest in the league. The new world is looking a lot like the old.
Though this is just the first of six long rounds, it may very well portent what will come down the line. Week four is the final week of round one, the last chance to set the agenda for the season to come. For some, it will be to change the future - others, to preserve the past.

The first match of the week saw 1st and 2nd place change places, with SKT barely nosing ahead of defending Proleague champs CJ Entus with a 4 - 3 victory. None of either team's big guns were matched up against each other on the initial six maps, and thus the two sides traded games evenly as the big names rolled through. (Paralyze came the closest to causing an upset, but ended up losing the colossus laser show to hero[join])
It all came down to the ace match on a still less-than-figured-out Arkanoid, and it was no surprise to see both teams pick players suited to the map instead of their best overall players. Fantasy proved to be the superior to Hydra on the night, using drops to cut off his opponent's economy while goading him into poor engagements as well. Though Hydra was able to survive until brood lords, a lack of proper infestor cover allowed Fantasy's upgraded marines to overwhelm them and take the series.

KT Rolster piled on the misery for last place Samsung, crushing them in a 4 - 1 rout. While everyone knew Flash and RorO were excellent players before the new PL season even started, there's a stark contrast in how their supporting casts have turned out. Stats, Action, and Wooki look like they're solid additions to the starting six, while on the other hand, Samsung are having the hardest time finding people to back RorO on a consistent basis (their X-mas eve game showed they have a problem with the reverse as well, more on that later). It was a particularly listless performance from Khan, as only Reality really made a fight of things (a race against the brood lord clock with mech) while the rest of the bench failed to acquit themselves.

On paper, it looked like it would be smooth sailing for EG-TL's second all-foreigner line-up of the season, but some bizarre choices in and out of the game led to yet another loss for the international coalition. The core trio of Jaedong TaeJa, and HerO all picked up their wins as expected, but a downright suicidal proxy 2-rax float strategy from PuMa in game six sent the series to an ace match.
There, EG-TL fell to the famous Proleague syndrome, deciding to field JYP as their ace while fans looked on dumbfounded. It was a move that could have been hailed as a stroke of brilliance had JYP triumphed (as it was for STX later in the the week), but unfortunately, he fell to Woongjin's own strange choice of ace in sOs (aka Shy). JYP went for a one base all-in against sOs's more conservative expansion build, but was forced to GG out after failing to penetrate the defenses.

With scrappy victory against STX Soul, the Eighth Team is starting to show the formula through which they might escape the bottom half of the table. Jaehoon - one of the biggest surprises of the first round - delivered once more with his best victory yet, crushing GSL semi-finalist Innovation in a macro game. Baby finally played up to expectations, winning a regular match and going on to take the ace match as well. And from the bench, Terminator stepped up to provide that crucial fourth win, allowing Team Eight to take the series. It's not a guaranteed formula for a victory, but it's the most likely one when you look at the Eight's roster, and they'll want to replicate it many times in the future.

Unlike their earlier loss to KT Rolster, Samsung faced a different problem against SKT, with ace RorO flubbing his lines and wasting good performances from inconsistent BW stars Jangbi and Stork. Stork's DT drop open gave him an early lead against his old rival Fantasy, which he patiently rolled into a late game win. Meanwhile, Jangbi took out Best, taking advantage of his opponent's weakness during a 2-stargate phoenix transition. On the other hand, RorO lost to one of the BW stars who made a slow SC2 transitions in Bisu. Once known for his comically bad force-fields, Bisu showed that he had turned a new leaf by using an immortal sentry attack to deal severe damage to his opponent before winning with a colossus deathball.
With the loss, Samsung dropped to 0 - 5. It's a deceiving stat, considering Samsung's players have showed they can play well (if inconsistently), and they've just had trouble firing on all cylinders at once. While Samsung might not be a championship candidate, they're definitely not 0 - 5 bad, and it would be hard not to improve from this point.

A 3 - 4 loss to KT Rolster ended a depressing week for the upstart CJ Entus, where the two traditional PL superpowers of KT and SKT went a long way toward stomping out their rebellion. The fact that both losses came in seven game series was particularly painful, with both ace matches lost disappointingly easily. Hydra's poor muta-ling-bane engagements led to defeat against SKT, and against KT Rolster, hero[join] looked helpless as Flash trampled him with infantry and medivacs.
It was also the end of a spectacular run from hero[join] who took two losses on the night after going undefeated in five prior games. Before falling to Flash, hero[join] also dropped an important game to Stats, Flash's lieutenant since the BW days. Hero's blink stalker rush failed to achieve anything, and Stats' faster robotics tech allowed him to take the victory.

Even as they picked up their second win, EG-TL showed some of the weaknesses that have led to a disappointing campaign thus far. Jaedong reaffirmed that he's still a liability when not deployed as a ZvZ specialist, while ThorZaIN and PuMa failed to produce yet again. HerO and TaeJa picked up wins as expected against outmatched opponents, but it took a win from the important but inconsistent JYP to send it to an ace match (TaeJa won easily after opening greedily and defending an early drop from Baby).
On the whole, EG-TL has done decent damage control after a slow start, and can look forward to adding Revival and Stephano to their roster in round two. EG-TL will now face some serious tests in the final week, facing the traditional powerhouse SK Telecom and a dangerously top heavy STX Soul roster.

As if to prove a point about counter-intuitive ace choices, STX Soul took their second win of the round by playing the unheralded Dear as their ace. While it seemed like insanity considering the presence of GSL semi-finalist Innovation (aka Bogus) on the roster, it paid off as Dear triumphed over Woongjin's Soulkey in a huge upset victory. It was all the more incomprehensible considering Dear had just lost to Soulkey in the previous set, but there could be no arguing with the final result: Soulkey couldn't deal with Dear's blink stalker all-in and surrendered the series.
On a positive note for the Stars, Light made a successful debut in the new season by defeating Hyvaa on Arkanoid. As Woongjin's Terran ace during the latter Brood War years, Light was conspicuously missing from the first few weeks of games. Though Woongjin lacks a super-ace on par with some of the other teams, a productive Light would make them one of the deeper teams from one to six.

As one of the most popular maps on the ladder, Cloud Kingdom has become one of the most understood maps in Starcraft 2. Modern PvZ on maps with easy third bases usually feature powerful three base pushes before the dreaded infestor/broodlord deathball hits the field. However, instead of following the lead of others, Dear prepared an older, yet still potent blink-stalker build that caught Soulkey off-guard.
Early Game and Openings
As the game began, Soulkey decided to be a bit tricky, opening with a 10 pool and 6 lings, instead of the standard 14 pool we see all too often. This build can do crippling damage if the Protoss starts with a nexus first, or starts with his forge in the main; however, Dear's opening was standard, opting for the low ground pylon and scouting immediately after it. This scout allowed him to get a forge up in time, as well as two cannons in time to deny the zerglings. In the end this put both players around even, as Dear's nexus was delayed, and the cost of the two cannons wasn't cheap either.
![[image loading]](/staff/monk/strategy_writeup/PL_S1R1W3/Lings_denied.jpg)
Lings denied
In hindsight, there are hints to Dear's later aggression to be seen very early on, coming from two subtle adjustments in his opening build order.
- 1. High ground second pylon. This allowed him to completely hide his cybernetics core from overlord scouts, preventing Soulkey from knowing how much chronoboost was being spent on warpgate technology.
- 2. A Fast gateway. Dear got his gateway at 18/26 supply, cutting probe production for a few seconds in order to do so. This gave him a slightly faster Cybernetics Core, which resulted in faster Warpgate tech being available for aggression, at the expense of a bit of economy.
On Cloud Kingdom it's very hard for Zerg to know the exact times a Protoss player will take his natural gasses. This makes scouting certain builds difficult. Soulkey had to play blind during the entire early game, putting him at a major disadvantage.
Dear's Pressure
Despite playing blind, Soulkey's lings spotted the initial Zealot and Stalker escorting a probe across the map. Soulkey reacted fast and immediately scouted Dear's base with a overlord, where he saw three fast gateways being warped in, as Dear was preparing for a 4 gate +1 attack pressure build. This timing attack aims at forcing the Zerg to build a earlier roach warren, and produce defensive units when Zerg would rather be droning. Most viewers will be familiar with the strategy, as it was most popular towards the end of 2011, even ending games straight up against overly greedy Zergs. However, as time went on, Zerg player's reactions to it improved, resulting in it being used quite rarely these days.
![[image loading]](/staff/monk/strategy_writeup/PL_S1R1W3/DearSoulkey2.jpg)
Soulkey got a perfect scout of Dear's base and reacted accordingly
As expected, Soulkey reacted perfectly to Dear's build by getting out a well-timed roach warren, and using a small set of lings to delay and push back the proxy pylon. He even managed to pick off one stalker and one zealot. Soulkey made a key mistake though, building nine roaches just to fight a small force of four zealots. This was overkill against the kind of threat Dear was presenting, which delayed his own economy and tech considerably.
The Blink Stalker Follow-up
At this point Dear was in a great spot, with Soulkey's third base hardly mining, and a near even worker count of 43 to 45. Also, Soulkey's lair, evo chamber, and ling speed were all very delayed. Soulkey could have started all that tech about 30 seconds earlier, but was busy defending the light pressure from Dear.
![[image loading]](/staff/monk/strategy_writeup/PL_S1R1W3/Pressure_finishes.jpg)
Succesfull pressure: Soulkey's tech was extremely late and his roaches are useless, while the zealots ran home safely
An important detail is that, while Dear's zealot pressure was going on, he used a second stalker off his gateway to deny further overlord scouting in his base. This put Soulkey in the dark about any possible follow-ups Dear had planned. 4 Gate pressure can branch off into many different mid-game strategies, and Soulkey could not identify this until it was too late. In all, Soulkey couldn't drone as much as he would have liked, and he overmade units to defend the early game push; as a result, the blink stalker push incoming from Dear would be nearly impossible to defend.
As Dear moved out with his second and final timing attack, Soulkey found himself in an awful position. He had delayed his key tech and upgrades up until the nine minute mark, meaning it would take about another three minutes to complete roach speed and the +1 attack, or two minutes to have ling speed available; all these upgrades being key in stopping most Protoss two base all-ins. The blink timing from Dear hit way too fast, before Soulkey's tech was anywhere near complete.
The initial roach investment delayed Soulket's macro hatchery, greatly reducing his drone count and production capabilities. Zerg player's normally want around 55 drones against a two base Protoss, but the early 4 gate pressure forced him to have about 10 less for the majority of the game. These factors all combined to make him weak to Dear's blink stalker follow-up.

The final blow: you know the Zerg is in trouble when there's more stalkers than roaches
When the Protoss army arrived at the Zerg's third base the game was basically over. There were more stalkers than roaches, and the four surviving zealots easily killed many of the few speedlings present. After amazing blink stalker micro, and a couple rounds of warp-ins, Soulkey was forced to abandon his third, and with no economy nor tech to fall back on it was just a matter of time before the Stars player was overwhelmed. This was GG.

Soulkey got blunk. GG!
The 4 gate pressure was a strategy we have not seen all too much lately. It hinges on the fact that it needs to force some sort of overproduction, or do moderate damage. This time around that worked perfectly for Dear. On any other map than Cloud Kingdom, there might have been the chance of Soulkey scouting the aggression earlier on. That did not happen, and it eventually led to his downfall in this game.
Dear clearly had thought this out specifically for a possible PvZ on this map. And it went perfectly as planned, giving him the win over Soulkey in the ace match between STX SouL, and Woongjin Stars. As STX SouL moves forward, it is starting to seem like they are a force to be reckoned with.

For better or for worse, this match features SIX mirror matches. On one hand, STX Soul will be pleased with getting Liquid's one-two punch of HerO and TaeJa in mirror matches. It's tough for any KeSPA team to handle those two, but PvP and TvT gives STX a decent chance. Bogus vs. TaeJa in particular will be a pivotal match, with neither team able to easily afford having their key Terrans lose.
On the other hand, EG-TL will be glad that their two weakest players in ThorZaIN and PuMa have drawn TvT's. We often see that even for Terran players going through a tough stretch, their TvT skill remains largely unaffected. This could be the best chance for the EG duo to pick up their first PL wins.

Saturday will bring the very first iteration of the telecommunications derby in full StarCraft II mode. KT Rolster and SK Telecom T1 have been serious rivals since the days they were called KTF Magic N's and Dongyang Orion, making this the longest lasting rivalry in esports (I call upon legions of Brood War elitists to downplay any other game's rivalries as insignificant). It's fitting that they are exactly tied for 1st place as they head into this meeting, both sporting much stronger SC2 squads than they did at the end of the hybrid Proleague.
Fantasy vs. Flash is the match everyone will be looking out for. Though most SC2 fans know only of Flash's immense reputation, the fact of the matter is that Flash stumbled slightly in the final year of Korean Brood War, allowing Fantasy to briefly (or not so briefly, depending on who you ask) overtake him. So far, Flash has a far superior SC2 resume than Fantasy, but the T1 Terrorist is catching up fast. With Flash showing continued weakness in TvT, he might give away ground to Fantasy in SC2 as well.

Woongjin has always been a team that flew under the radar, but they're just one point behind CJ Entus in fourth place, and a win away from springing into second place. On the other hand, the Eights have a chance to become a solidly mid-table team with a win, which would be quite the accomplishment after being pegged by many as the new Air Force Ace at the start of the season.
Jaehoon has emerged as one of the surprise players of the new Proleague, and it took TaeJa to hand him his first loss in the new season. He'll face a far more renowned SC2 player in Soulkey, but after he took down Bogus last week, even proven Code S players can't intimidate Jaehoon.

I get the feeling we'll be overusing this term quite a bit during the season, but this is a must win game for both CJ and Samsung. Samsung has to stop their losing streak ASAP, lest the stink of defeat become too embedded in their bones. As for CJ, their pride as defending champions and as a new Proleague power was hurt severely by dropping two straight to SKT and KT. They'll want to stop the skid short and keep challenging the old world order in SC2.

The Big Losers
In the first few weeks of play,![Terran (T)](https://tl.net/tlpd/images/Ticon_small.png)
Samsung KHAN(-1 points, -1) racks up another two loses this week, bringing them down to a 0-5 match score. While in the beginning of the season we argued whether Team 8 or EG-TL would be the Air Force ACE of SC2, Samsung KHAN has emerged as the surprise 'winner.' Samsung's lack of any ace who can consistently get wins as well as their lack of a Terran who can win a game sees them nailed to the bottom of the table. Samsung's losses are not only frequent, but are also often complete stomps.
The Current #1 Team

TerrorTerran was our highest ranked player at the end of week one, and he regained his number one position this week on the back of huge KT Rolster wins. Let's see what he had to say about his week three results.

The only move I made prior to week 3 was getting rid of Shine from my main team (yeah, it was dumb to trade Hydra for Shine in the first place after week 1. I guess I didn`t know he was so bad) and trade him for Ryul2 which paid off because he won 1 out of 2 games. The rest I think is very obvious as my team is KT and I have 5 KT players, so week 3 was very good for me. I’ve always had Flash as my captain in FPL and he’s been doing great so I think that was a good pick. Stats is my second favorite player, so that’s why I choose him. As for Wooki, Action and Crazy-hydra, I am a fan of all of them, so I didn’t spend too much thinking on which players to pick. I just got lucky as they have all have been performing fantastically.
My anti-team has also been doing very good although I like EG-TL team, and I was excited when they announced they would be playing in PL. I really don’t expect foreigner players to do well in PL, at least in the near future. I hope they prove me wrong.

The (Hypothetical) Best Team
The best hypothetical team (without trades) this week earns 114 points, a mere 19 points higher than TerrorTerran's team. Notice how TerrorTerran's team shares 4 out of 7 main-team picks as the optimal team. If anyone would like to help with a program that will let us calculate the hypothetical best team including trades, feel free to contact us!
