I am hosting a community based tournament to facilitate both a unique viewer experience, and the promotion of player streams. The unique parameters of this tournament are that viewers influence, through voting, the map pool and the player invites: Also, all participating players stream their perspective (and are allowed to run ads and keep all revenue).

I have designed a structure such that community member may assume roles of casters, admins, and (of course) players. In addition to the invites that are influenced by the community polls, there are 3 qualification events. This design is detailed; created by assimilating the formats of the best leagues/tournaments, and with the legitimate intent to facilitate a great user experience, in terms of both the capacity to govern significant tournament parameters, and viewership in general. The rest of this thread will convey my design to you, and should provide clear information in regards to any method of involvement.

Notes (about reserved spots and confirmed invites):
+ Show Spoiler +
-If AxCrank or Liquid'TLO do not confirm their pending invites (both have requested time for schedule verification), then an invite will be extended to ROOTPuck.
-If both AxCrank and Liquid'TLO do not confirm their pending invites, then an invite will be extended to ROOTPuck, RootMajOr will take the other voted slot and a new direct invite will be sent.
-Note that Harstem was invited from the reddit thread due to inadequate vote counts in the first TL poll.
-Note that CombatEX has agreed to play under conditions that 100% guarantee that cheating is not possible.
+ Show Spoiler +
--#1: There will be a 5 minute stream delay on the caster streams
--#2: A webcam will be placed in his room to reveal that there is no secondary monitor within his vision.
--#3: He will be forced to use speakers instead of a headset, such that he cannot deny skype from interfacing with the headset and receive auditory advice undetectable by stream viewers. Any voice that occurs over the speakers would be audible in his mic. Yes this will lower the production value of CombatEX's stream but he must make this trade-off to compete.
--#4: He must request to pause.
--#5: He may not spam chat in game (subjective enforcement).
Streaming his own perspective clearly negates the capacity to hack (which he isn't even known for)

-Destiny saw the invite from the first r/starcraft thread but since the overall thread count was reduced it is reasonable to allocate 2 slots to the final TL player poll (as they suffer from minimal particiaption) and allocate a seed to this player; who recieved more upvotes than the other players from the first r/starcraft thread.

If you are wondering about how the "Community Choice" invites work, refer to the "Community" section of this thread.

If you are wondering about how to participate in a qualifier, reference that section.

Note: The bracket stage facilitates both double elimination (for the players ranking 1st or 2nd in their groups), and a distinct 1st-4th place, for which cash prizes will be allocated.

Note: NA Server; but players from all regions are welcome.

Prize Distribution:

+ Show Spoiler +
Current Main Event Prize Pool = $400

Day 1:
40% = 5% x 8 Group Winners

Day 2:
30% = 1st Place Bracket Stage
15% = 2nd Place Bracket Stage
10% = 3rd Place Bracket Stage
5% = 4th Place Bracket Stage
(Total 60% allocated towards Bracket Stage)

With an ideal prize pool of $500, it would look like this:

+ Show Spoiler +
Day 1:
$200 = $25 x 8 Group Winners

Day 2:
$150 = 1st Place
$75 = 2nd Place
$50 = 3rd Place
$25 = 4th Place

Main Event specific rules (including check-in times) for players and casters are available here:

To host a stream or be a caster, email WhalesFromSpace@gmail.com.
Note: Unreasonably awful emails will be responded to with a picture of Kimbo Slice.
Note: Caster streams will implement a 5 minute stream delay.

This streaming format facilitates a multitude of options for the viewer in regards to their tournament experience. If particular casters, or observation work is infringing on the viewer's capacity to enjoy the game, they can switch the the play perspective of who they are rooting for, or even select one of the other 3+ matches being streamed in parallel. Open Coverage allows newer or unknown casters to present high level games and recieve feedback from a live scenario. This design results in all matches being broadcast, and offers 3 ways to interface with each match. The schedule for the broadcasting of the double-elimination bracket was verified as smooth for live presentation in my previous event (Space Whales Super Showdown: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=334263)

For some context to the polls, please reference graphic linked in the above section.

Voting Format:

+ Show Spoiler +
Team Liquid:
Players post, or are nominated by a fan post, for inclusion in the poll system. Only one instance of nomination is required for conclusion in each poll (or until the player is voted into participation). Polls will be posted for ~24 hours, and at the end of the duration invites will be sent out in order of highest voted for players, until 3 players accept invitation into the Main Event.

If you are nominating a player, or posting in request to be included in the poll, please use this format:

Include in Player Poll:
Bnet.ID:
Stream Link:

This will make it much easier for me to create the polls.

reddit/r/starcraft:
Players post, or are nominated, by comments in specific threads allocated towards player voting. The upvotes will be recorded ~24 hours after a thread is created: Invites will be sent out in order of highest voted for players, until 3 players accept invitation into the Main Event. Do note that a comment will have to be made each time a thread pops up, even if it is a recurring instance of poll participation.

Note: The change was made for 3 players to be included per poll; this was because of the delays associated in player contact (for example many took 2-3 days to respond).

Note: I did not use a TeamLiquid.net forum poll because the max is 12 options.
Note: Of the players that had more than 3 votes each, only 2 accepted invitation (Drewbie and CatZ did not respond). So, I allocated the 3rd player spot to the r/sc thread; as it recieved over 10x the participation.

What if a player can't stream because he doesn't have enough bandwidth to do so? Is he not allowed to participate?

If you need stream mods I could probably help, and this looks like a great idea for a tournament. Hopefully some good streamers will get more recognition!!

Stream delays should be a must here if we are promoting it, don't want to give it a bad impression by immediately showing signs of stream cheating.

We had several discussion on mappool sizes. Wasn't the result that it always came down to: too many maps, 5 or just 4 would be enough. I'd rather see one combined poll for 4 maps. I think 9 maps is way over the top.

Other than that, I think it's a nice idea. Good Luck and hope it turns out great.

My favourite part about this tournament is the voting for MOTM maps to be put into the map pool. If they end up playing well in a tournament format, we might finally see an update to the excruciatingly stagnant tournament pools.

I see your points and considered this perspective when designing the community interaction parameter. I feel that using the conventional quantity of 5 maps would result in a generic tournament map pool with maybe 1 unexpected addition. I chose 9 maps because it facilitates, along with diversity and increased community interaction, a best of 7 in which each player vetos a map. Note that for every round, players each veto a map from the series. This should allow players with a distaste for new map experimentation, or general discomfort with a specific option, the chance to eliminate it from their tournament experience. I expect to get 7 standard tournament maps along with 2 community made maps.

It is clearly a trade-off, so I went for the less conventional approach to cater towards the unique parameters of the tournament.

I can follow your reasoning as it's a smaller tournament. The post was more my personal dislike with the bigger mappools in bigger tournaments (I really wouldn't mind only 3-4 maps at major tournaments). Looking forward to see that little project of yours unfold.
