How to All-in more Efficiently as Terran
Last Update: March 9th, 2012

Introduction

Alright it's time. You just got 4gated, baneling busted and 2 port banshee rushed into the ground the last 3 ladder games and you are pissed off. You have your 1-1-1 all set to go and an unsuspecting Protoss foe at the other side of the map about to experience your wrath. However, there is one more question on your mind, how many scvs do I bring? 10? 20? all of them? 93% of them? How many do I leave on minerals and gas?

Two situations can happen:
a.) you bring too many scvs (yes this can happen) and you have no money for reinforcements (not good)
b.) you bring too few scvs and you start to accumulate a small trust fund back home (also not good)

Math time!
  • From 0 to 16 scvs, each scv mines roughly 42 minerals per minute. -> 16 scvs mine 672 minerals per minute.
  • From 17 to 24 scvs, each scv mines 18 minerals per minute. -> 24 scvs mine 816 minerals per minute.
  • Having more than 24 scvs yields no increase in income.
  • 3scvs on gas yield 114 gas per minute.
  • A mule mines 180 minerals per minute (collection rate not effected by scv saturation)

Production Costs:
  • Constant marine production costs 120 minerals per minute. (240 per minute for reactor rax)
  • Constant maurader prodction costs 200 minerals and 50 gas per minute.
  • Constant hellion production costs 200 minerals per minute (400 for reactor factory)
  • Constant tank production costs 200 minerals and 167 gas per minute
  • Constant thor production costs 300 minerals and 200 gas per minute
  • Constant viking production costs 214 minerals 108 gas per minute (428 minerals, 216 gas for reactor starport)
  • Constant banshee production costs 150 minerals 100 gas per minute
  • Constant supply depots require 200 minerals per minute + that scv is not mining

Simple Examples:

6rax
Constant marine production costs 720 minerals per minute (6x120). This means you need 13 scvs + mules to maintain production (13x42 + 180 = 726 minerals per minute)
Any scvs you have above 13 can be brought along to attack.

7rax
Constant marine production costs 840 minerals per minute (7x120). This means you need 16 scvs + mules to maintain production (16x42 + 180 = 852 minerals per minute)
Any scvs you have above 16 can be brought along to attack.

More complicated examples

1-1-1 all-in
Barracks with reactor -> constant marines 240 minerals per minute
Factory with tech lab -> constant tanks 200 minerals 167 gas per minute
Starport with tech lab -> constant banshees 150 minerals 100 gas per minute

Total cost: 590 minerals, 267 gas per minute

We consume 590 minerals and 267 gas per minute so we need 10 scvs + a mule (10x42+180 = 600) on minerals and 6 scvs on gas to maintain production (The gas doesnt quite work out properly but that is ok) The rest of the scvs can be brought to attack.

Proxy Thor all-in
Barracks with reactor -> constant marines 240 minerals per minute
Factory with tech lab -> constant thors 300 minerals and 200 gas per minute

Total cost: 540 minerals per minute and 200 gas per minute

We consume 540 minerals and 200 gas per minute so we need 9 scvs + a mule (9x42+ 180 = 558) on minerals and 6 scvs on gas to maintain production. The rest of the scvs can be brought to attack.

3rax (stim+combat shield) all-in
Barracks with tech lab -> constant marauders 200 minerals, 50 gas
Barracks with tech lab -> constant marauders 200 minerals, 50 gas
Barracks with reactor -> constant marines 240 minerals

Total cost: 640 minerals, 100 gas

We consume 640 minerals and 100 gas per minute so we need 11 scvs + a mule (11x42+180= 642) on minerals and 3 scvs on gas to maintain production. The rest of the scvs can be brought to attack.

Conclusion
Having a few more scvs in battle or at home can determine the outcome of the game. If you are gonna all-in, do it right =]

This is an excellent resource! As an all-in addict I will make great use of it.

Bear in mind that you'll want a small amount of bank for making supply depots (or at least a single depot-- once the battle starts you'll be trading supply and wont' need more depots), and you'll want extra income during proxy thor so you can repair it.
When you stare into the iCCup, the iCCup stares back.

Interesting, thanks for the numbers.

If I'm reading this right, If I want to 3 rax marine all-in, I should leave 1 MULE and 4 SCVs behind ?

Thank you! Yes that is correct you do need some income for depots + repair, but as most people's macro is not prefect I did not really talk too much about it. In addition all of the numbers are conservative (costs rounded up, mining rounded down) so you should have some extra money around.

Btw Blazinghand I love your thorship tvz strategy, it's really great! =D

Yes you are correct. 3 rax marines = 360 minerals per minute for constant production. Mule + 4 scvs = 180+ 168 = 348, close enough.

The "1-1-1" vs toss usually involves 3 rax, 2 naked, 1 reactor. Perhaps you should change your guide to reflect that? Other than that, this is a really cute/cool guide.

So everything is skewed unless you count the supply depots required per minute. You do have constant supply depots, but maybe the specific combination of reinforcements you desire is less than 80% efficient on constant supply depots. So for every category here you MUST include the additional supply depots (since you can calculate supply depots per minute since supply increased per minute can be calculate, and any assumptions about no losses ore 25% losses can be factored in).

Otherwise, every calculation is false because supply is a HUGE resource-intensive act. Let me repeat, you tell half the story needed in an allin. You tell the story that your reinforcements are ONLY replacing DEAD UNITS, which is hardly the case (See 1/1/1 where you are preserving units and marching tanks until a big engage).

So modify, please.

That version bumps up the mineral consumption by 240 per minute bringing the total consumption to 830 minerals per minute. This means you would need 16 scvs + a mule on minerals (16x42+180 = 852) and 6 scvs on gas. The rest could be brought to attack.

Huh, who said all-ins?! lol

I've had mixed results executing terran SCV all-ins, and I think my problem was that I would just box my mineral line and go go go. I'll have to study the numbers and pay a little more attention to how many SCVs I leave mining, thanks for the work you put into this StimmedProbe.
