After our failed experiment last week with a paged layout I hope everyone is happy to see we've gone back to the traditional scrolling layout. For all the people who enjoyed the paged layout that we presented last week I apologise that we've had to go back, but the people have spoken, and as I stated last week, we do this for you. Now enough of the boring administrative stuff let's get into what went down this week in the SK Planet Proleague as we cruise towards the end of the season, with playoffs looming ominously ever closer.
![[image loading]](/staff/Kiett/SPL_misc/chart_120222_2.png)
Not much room at the top.
This week provided us with a slew of mediocre games, with cheese dominating all around. Khan managed to plop themselves back at the top of the table thanks to getting to play two games this week as opposed to KT's one, but we all know that their time at the top may be limited due to KT's massive games won differential being at a staggering twelve. The really interesting part of the table is the CJ, Stars and SKT situation. With each of these teams being in spitting distance of each other and only two extra slots available in the top four (assuming KT and Khan will breeze in) these teams will be fighting extra hard in the coming weeks to attempt to make it to the playoffs.
Looking at the content we've got to show you guys this week first we've reordered the way we present this report so that the top five games comes first. 2Pacalypse- has gone through all the games that were played and distilled them into the best five games that you should watch from the week. Recaps have been once again written by yours truly to help jog your memory of what went down in each of the series this week or give you a nice summary if you missed the games live.
Hyde has stepped in to write up each teams chances at making it into the post season with a Playoffs Preview. Carnivorous Sheep has continued his fantastic Team Spotlight series, this time featuring the somewhat middling team, Woongjin Stars. Finally Kiett has filled in for the out-of-action Mustaju by providing some + Show Spoiler + Previews of the games that will be played this week.
So that's it from the SPL team this time around. With the season boiling down to its final point all too soon we hope you're as excited as we are to see what happens next in the drama we call Brood War.

Top 5 Games of the Week
The good, the cheesy and the ugly.

We're opening today's top five recommended games list with a little bit of cheese and whine. In StarCraft world, players can't be so vocal to show their dissatisfaction with specific strategies their opponents choose to do or they'll be faced with penalties. But what they can do, is to leave a game without saying 'gg', a term short for good game. Every since the dawn of online multiplayer games, 'gg' has been an acronym that gamers would write to their opponents at the end of the game, admitting their defeat and letting their opponent know they played well. So when a player doesn't write it and leaves the game without saying anything, it leads to conclude that a losing player doesn't think that a game was in fact good. This is considered highly unprofessional, but sometimes we let our emotions get the best of us.
Objectively, this game was indeed good and even though some involved parties might not agree with us, it deserves fifth spot on our recommended games list. - 4
I've always been a fan of PvP matchup. It might be due to the fact that reaver is one of my favorite BW units. So when you have two players both utilizing their reavers to their greatest potential (ok ok, one slightly more so than other), consider me entertained. In this game we sawKal go for three gates before making a robotics bay, while
Jaehoon made two gates. Since simple math tells you that three gates give you more units than two gates, and
Kal took advantage of this fact and expanded faster.
Jaehoon followed shortly after, but with slightly faster reavers. After they both settled with expansions and reavers, the game came down to who had better shuttle and reaver control. Expect to be sitting at the edge of your seat while the action unfolds in this fast paced game full of harass.
- 3
At third place, we have yet another PvP. One of the facts why this matchup makes for very entertaining games is the high possibility of a comeback. Even though you might start out economically ahead of your opponent, a single storm or reaver drop in your mineral line can level the playing fields yet again. In last game we saw a fast paced PvP full of early game attacks and harass. This game was more macro oriented, but still highly entertaining nonetheless. We sawsHy expoing earlier than
BeSt and being in economic lead from there on.
BeSt tried to catch up, but
sHy certainly didn't make it easy on him by sniping his third expansion with double shuttle. After some macroing from both players, we witnessed a huge fight that will eventually lead one of the players to victory.
Now go watch this game and I promise there are no more PvPs for today! - 2
I loveBaBy's TvT. Don't take this as a spoiler, but as a fact that every single
BaBy's TvT this season is highly recommended (except for perhaps one, and it wasn't his fault ^^). The
babyman simply knows how to play entertaining TvTs. I admit I wasn't the greatest fan of TvT matchup, mostly due to it's turtling nature butBaBy showed me the light. In this game we saw him take on an old timer
Canata who certainly made a formidable opponent to
BaBy. So I urge you to watch this game and not just skip it because it's a TvT and over 30 minutes long. The time spent watching this game will just fly by and you will be left with feeling of wanting more. If this type of game really does captivates you, then I suggest watching all of
BaBy's TvTs from this season.
- 1
Yes, I'm afraid it's true. This week's recommended games doesn't feature a single Zerg. Maybe due to the fact that almost every game involving Zerg this week lasted less than 10 minutes, but I digress. This game featuresJangBi and
Last, two players that both did fairly well this season. Even though the game was seemingly standard, hard pressure from
JangBi and clutch defending from
Last made this game highly entertaining. If there's anything we learned from this game, it's that SCVs are seriously imba, but then again we already knew that didn't we?

Recaps, Round 3 Week 2

CJ managed to put its poor performances of late firmly behind it with a dominating three nil victory over the number one side, Samsung Khan. In a bizarre series of games, January (coach of Khan) decided not to play either of her star Protoss players and instead sent out Shine, Sharp and Turn. January seemingly underestimated CJ or had a really strange strategy in mind as these players were quickly disposed of, putting up little opposition.
Shine was the first to go, falling to Hydra in a perfect example of how a twelve-hatch loses to a nine-pool, and Sharp fell to Leta soon after. Despite managing to do some early damage with a vulture bust, and having an earlier expansion, he proceeded to let Leta use wraiths to exploit his lack of detection and decimate his worker count. Leta then pressed his advantage, out-expanding the less experienced Terran from Khan until he finally decided to end the game, putting CJ up two zero. Finally, Effort dealt with Turn’s attempt at an aggressive early attack with ease, winning the game simply by making mutalisks, which Turn unable deal with. All in all it was a disappointing display from Khan considering they just came off a week in which they slew KT Rolster twice.

Woongjin continued on from its win over Ace last week to come from behind and take out STX. It was a disappointing loss for STX, as every loss at this point in the competition is a loss it can’t afford, meaning that it is becoming less and less likely we’ll be seeing anything from STX in the post season. The series opened with Light against the ex-Hwaesung Protoss, Dear. As well we know, Light’s TvP is beyond atrocious, and he showed us once again how he simply has an ability to not win at a matchup other Terrans make look effortless. Having fended off Dear’s speed shuttle reaver harass without taking any significant damage, he subsequently died to a simple speedlot/goon attack for which he was singularly poorly prepared.
Classic followed up his teammate’s success, holding off Hon_sin’s proxy two-factory play without taking significant damage and, once he managed to stabilise and get dropships out, was easily able to clean up and win the game. This is where things went pear-shaped for STX.
Shuttle came out for his first game in over a month and was quickly sent back to the bench by a well-executed hydra bust from the ever-consistent Soulkey. Bogus came out next only to be dispatched by Shy, who used a proxy robo to get out a shuttle and elevator his way into Bogus’s main base along with a reaver to easy take out his defences. Finally, Zero completed the comeback for his team taking out Last in an impressive game, thwarting Last’s fast science vessel strategy, and perhaps signalling a return to form for the out of sorts Zerg.

KT took down SKT in a bounce-back performance after hard losses to Khan last week, to bringing it back into the number one position it had previously surrendered. KT was able to get up two to zero from the get go, with Flash and Crazy-hydra scoring easy victories. Flash opened up for his team, taking down Best with a proxy-barracks bunker push that Best didn’t scout until it was too late to prevent it. Crazy-hydra played a solid ZvP against Sun, who seemed to have little confidence, failing to push when he was at an advantage and waiting until Crazy-hydra’s macro kicked in when it was too late.
Fantasy brought things back for SKT, taking down Mind in a dominant TvT performance – never letting up the pressure and pushing down Mind until he could hold no longer. Soo then took out Stats with a five-hatch hydra bust, waiting for Stats to move out of his base and then decimating his defences with a ling run-by, setting up his hydras for victory. Unfortunately for SKT the comeback was not to be as Wooki took advantage of Bisu’s overly safe play to sneak an early expansion and overwhelm Bisu with his macro advantage. KT once again showed why it’s been such a force this season, with Flash’s auto-win putting them in a fantastic position to win series.
![[image loading]](/staff/Simplistik/ACE_v3.png)
![[image loading]](/staff/Simplistik/Team_8_v6.png)

Team 8 kept its playoff chances alive with a tough fought win over Ace, which has had a really hard time of it after a relatively strong start to the season. Jaedong was first out for Team 8 and exerted his dominance in the ZvZ match-up over Orion, who was helpless in the face of Jaedong’s zergling antics, despite technically having a build order advantage. Jaedong looked to be in top form, which is a good omen for Team 8 if they do actually manage to hit the playoffs stage of the competition. Jaehoon and Tyson couldn't manage to support the star Zerg player, both losing their matches quite one-sidedly. Jaehoon was bested by fantastic reaver harass from Kal, and Tyson fell to Piano's incessant vulture harass.
With Sea coming out in set four, considering his performances of late, it looked like Team 8 were going to get bundled out by Ace of all teams, but Sea had other plans. Utilising an interesting fast vessel strategy, he sparred with Great in an exciting back and forth game, finally coming out on top at the end of the game and keeping his team alive in the series. Finally Baby came out against Canata and, after an action packed game in which Canata seemed to be ahead at points, Baby showed his resilience and came out on top, giving Team 8 the victory, three to two.

![[image loading]](/staff/Simplistik/STX_v2.png)

Coming off a bizarre loss earlier in the week to CJ, Khan finally decided to retire the trolling version of January and get the good one out of the closet. The series opened poorly for them, with Brave falling to Calm, who utilised the same quirky back-door hydra bust strategy on Chain Reaction as he used against Best earlier in the season. Despite Brave having a spotting pylon and a thousand and one cannons, he was unable to stop his natural’s nexus going down and the game was all but a formality from there. Jangbi came out next and levelled the scores, taking down Last in a fairly one-sided encounter. Last attempted to take a third command center before he even had siege mode, and Jangbi punished him accordingly.
Stork was up next for Khan, with January actually playing her star players, and he got a rematch against Mini, with whom he played an exciting match last round. Mini attempted to proxy-gate Stork, but Stork was easily prepared (having played in the era where two-gate was a relatively common opening) and easily crushed Mini's attempt to cheese him.
Finally Reality came out and finished off the series with a strong victory over Hyvaa, managing to take out Hyvaa's third base in the mid-game and never letting go of his advantage, pushing down Hyvaa's natural and utilizing drops to split his forces until the STX player was forced to concede, and most likely also conceding STX's chances at a playoffs birth.
![[image loading]](/tlpd/images/teams/icons/uniforms/1.png)
![[image loading]](/staff/Simplistik/Stars_v2.png)

SKT managed to keep themselves in running for the playoffs with a strong victory over Stars. In what seemed like something that would happen in Bizarro-World, SoO managed to take down Light in a quick game, with Light attempting a two-port wraith and being dominated by Soo's two-hatch hydralisk into mutalisk strategy, with the GG coming anticlimactically right as SoO's mutalisks popped out of their eggs. Soulkey came out to level the scores for his team in an equally uninspiring game against Bisu, utilising a hidden hatchery to bust down Bisu's defences with early zerglings.
Fantasy was out next for SKT and made quick work of ZerO in yet another quick game that seemed to be the norm for the series, busting down Zero's minimal defences with a quick four barracks timing attack as Zero attempted to break his own natural with muta-ling but was unsuccessful in his endeavors. Best finished off the series for SKT taking out Shy in a PvP that started off eerily reminiscent of Bisu's loss to Wooki earlier in the week. Fortunately for SKT fans, Best was able to come back from build order deficit and, despite losing his third nexus to a cute double shuttle play from Shy, fought back to get a lead and win a decisive battle with templars that Shy neglected to make until too late.
Overall it was an uninspiring night of Brood War, with all but the final game being quick and silly games. Hopefully this wont continue as a trend as we continue in this final round of SPL for the season.

Playoffs Preview
What the future holds...
By: Hyde
There are only four weeks left in round three, as we progress through the round, the margin for error grows thin and the importance of each match has never been greater. Magnified by the fact that some teams are only one or two games away from over taking their opposition, the weeks to come are only going to get fiercer and bloodier. Now, I can come up with some fantastical scenarios where we get no telecom teams in the final four, but who's going to believe that. Looking at their current standings and their performance, here are the teams that I think will make the play-offs.
It must be a great time to be a Khan fan, get it? Great, nevermind…
Never have they been in such a dominant position and their chances of making the play-offs are looking fantastic to say the least. While they cannot boast about their game differential, they're sitting atop of the PL Mountain, just ahead of KT Rolster. With only four games remaining, they've pretty much guaranteed themselves a position in the final four. I suspect that'll take their game against ACE with ease, and netting another (or possibly two) win over one of SKT, T8, or the Stars. There's no need for a prediction here, KHAN will make the playoffs with their current performance and momentum. At this point, KHAN would have to put in effort to not make the playoffs.
KT fans are laughing right now, all the way to the playoff bank. Unlike the weak team everyone perceived them to be at the beginning of the season, Flash and his side-kick, Stats, has lead their team through some fierce competition, smashing everyone to reach the top with a whopping twelve game differential.
Flash has not lost a single game this season, without individual leagues to focus his attention elsewhere, Flash has all the time in the world to prepare his PL games and dominate. With no player in a real position to stop him, KT basically enters every game with an automatic win. Stats has also been doing quite well in supporting KT, holding a solid 64% win-rate to bolster KT's chances of winning each game, making him the second pillar for the KT force. Sprinkle in some KT Zerg, whom are been doing better than their SKT Zerg rivals, a dash of Wooki and you have yourself a pretty good team. KT is in a very real position to make the playoffs again, and with the way things are going for them, I wouldn't be surprised if they were the ones waiting at the top at the end of the season. Make no mistake; KT is well on their way to winning their third consecutive PL title.
Overall, SKT isn’t doing too badly, but they’re certainly not the force they were last season. A poorer than usual performance in round two meant SKT slipped below the half-way mark, and they’ve been slowly fighting their way up ever since. With their recent success over the Stars, SKT has moved up the third position, but the battle is far from over. They’re still within danger of dropping out of the top four, and SKT faces a real possibility that they may not make the playoffs.
Their overall supporting cast hasn’t been pulling through as much as last season. SKT Zerg’s have lived up to their name on numerous occasions. Rising Protoss rookie, Sun, has been less than stellar, going through an ugly five game losing streak and under performing most of the season. Bisu, while still maintaining a positive ratio, hasn’t been the PL dominator he was last season. Best sold his PvT skills to become a beast in his PvZ match-up, leaving everyone in astonishment by beating the likes of Jaedong, Soulkey, Effort, and Hoejja. Unsurprisingly, it’s Fantasy who has been holding down the fort. I’d like to take this moment to laugh at those who thought Fantasy was going to slip into mediocrity when news of Oov entering the army hit the stands. Fantasy is second only to Flash, going 11-2 this season. On a whole, SKT has been able to string together enough wins to keep them within reach of the playoffs.
However, SKT’s future remains uncertain at this point, while they maybe the favorites over STX and Team 8, by no means are they assured an easy victory. STX has had SKT’s number all season long, and Team 8 has shown that with a little strategic play they can take SKT down in one fell swoop. SKT still holds an ACE card, literally. ACE being their second to last match-up, SKT is almost guaranteed a win over the boys in blue, giving them a little more breathing room, a luxury the Stars does not have. If SKT can overcome either STX or Team 8, they’ll be in a good position to make the playoffs over CJ and Stars. It’s time to pull out that crystal ball and show what great preparation can do.
How does a team that looks so good on paper end up in the middle of the pack? More baffling is how a star-studded line-up went from the top in round one to the bottom in round two, could it be that CJ is just an average team? Whatever the case maybe, they're still within shot of making the playoffs. They've got some serious competition ahead of them [Team 8, Stars, KT, STX], and I think their primary focus should be beating Team 8, Stars, and STX to secure a position in the playoffs. CJ is mostly in contention with SKT and Stars, as they’re the closest competitors and currently one step ahead of CJ.
CJ is just unpredictable, they’re just as likely to win as they are to lose, and that makes predicting whether they’ll make it into the playoffs a little difficult. I hear the CJ coach is good at getting the match-ups he desire, this will probably be the best time to utilize such ability. With half the job done, the only remaining part left to play is for the players to perform. If they can do that much they should be safe. CJ also has ACE in their five remaining games, giving them a little breathing space. But the ACE card only matters if they can secure one or two wins before meeting ACE. One slip up could mean SKT and Stars pulling away further, it’ll be close.
My opinion on the matter is, through their shear (supposed) depth; they’ll scrap through (and probably choke in the playoffs).
Overall, Stars is a solid team with some great key players and decent support. That being said, the Stars are one of those teams that I'm not quite sure whether they'll make it or not, simply because it really depends on whether Zero can win, and whether Light meets a Zerg.
Zero, one of the supporting pillars of this team has had a rather rough season, starting out on a losing streak with another quickly following after, Zero just hasn’t been himself. There's really no reason why Zero should be losing so much when his team mate, Soulkey, is doing so well. The question that must be answered is, will Zero step up and start winning more often, because this late into the season, with teams separated by one or two games, every match is important. The other factor is Light, who's very important to the Star's arsenal. He's had a mediocre season, mostly because his TvP is still atrocious. Six of his nine losses can be attributed to Protoss.
Looking at their four remaining games, I think the Stars are going to have a hard time securing a position in the final four. It's not entirely impossible, but it will be difficult and daunting task to overcome the likes of CJ, KHAN, and KT. My prediction for the Stars is that they’ll just miss out on the playoffs to one of CJ or SKT.
It's hard to believe a team with such line-up is in the lower half of the ladder. Everyone had high hopes for this team and they were meant to blaze through all competition, but as we head into round 3, is it too late for Team 8 to turn things around? They're only one game away from being tied fourth place along with SKT and CJ, and it's not too farfetched to say that their chances are still decent. What remains to be seen is how well Team 8 will perform in their last five games.
The fact of the matter is, the majority of the team is under performing. Jaedong has been a little iffy this season. Both Tyson and Jaehoon are struggling to reach the 50% mark. I don't even know what's happened to Killer, he's only won two of his eight games. Sea, especially Sea, once dubbed the ProLeague Warrior, has fallen into some deep slump, unable to overcome his Protoss woes. Sometimes they show up well prepared, and other times it's almost like they didn't even both practicing. With the Stars, KT, and KHAN standing in their way, I honestly don't think they're going to make the cut. Not with the way the team is currently performing, with such a limited roster to work with and a coach that I feel is stubborn at times, Team 8 might burn up in the heat of the competition. As hard as it is for me to say this, Team 8 is most likely not going to make the playoffs. Prove me wrong, Team 8, prove me wrong.
Where do I start with STX. They've always had the potential to be the greatest team, yet they've never truly been able to show it. They go one week toppling a giant like SKT to being annihilated the next by ACE. While STX rookies are capable of taking down some very top-notch players, what matters is how often they can do this, and the answer is not often enough. STX has been mixing up the new and old, and they’ve yielded some very mixed results. Shuttle hasn’t won a single game this season, Modesty keeps losing in his best match-up, and their previous season ace [Bogus] has been on a losing-streak.
It’s not all bad, Calm (avoiding Terran all season long) and Last have been holding down positive records. Dear, who’s a one-trick PvT pony, has the highest win-rate of the team, but I’m not sure how much this actually counts for when his wins are over the likes of Sea, Light, and FBH.
The problem with STX is that they can’t string together enough wins each series to push them further up the ladder. At seventh place on the ladder and only four games left to play, they’re really going to have to dig deep to claw their way into the top four. It’s not entirely impossible given that the teams above them are only one or two games ahead, with a little a lot of luck [in the form of ‘strategic play’ or/and the other teams performing poorly] STX could make the playoffs. But I just don’t see it happening, not when CJ, SKT, and KT are standing in their way. The playoff dream might be a little too far out of reach for STX.
Oh Ace, everyone's beloved team. Currently at the bottom of the ladder, with only five games left their chances of getting into the playoffs is nil. They still have some very fierce competitors [KHAN, STX, SKT, KT, CJ] ahead of them and unfortunately there is no other ACE team to provide them any relief. Even if they were to win all their remaining games, they still wouldn't make the cut, which is a real shame because they started off the season rather well and it would have been a dream to see them competing in the playoffs. Sometimes, you have to enter into battle with the full knowledge that you're going to lose in the end, and while they may not make the cut, there is no doubt in my mind that Ace is going down swinging and they'll put their lives on the line to win their remaining games.
So in the end I think our top four are going to be KHAN, KT, SKT, and CJ. Fear not those who support the teams not listed, I think it’s worth noting that we’ve had a wild ride this season, having upset after upset. The standings are still very close and who knows what might happen, maybe the team you’re rooting for will make it, maybe they won’t. One thing is for sure, this is going to be one vicious (and probably cheesy) round.

If SKT can overcome either STX or Team 8, they’ll be in a good position to make the playoffs over CJ and Stars. It’s time to pull out that crystal ball and show what great preparation can do.
CJ Entus

Woongjin Stars

![[image loading]](/staff/Kiante/skplr3w2/stars.jpg)
Team 8
![[image loading]](/staff/Kiante/skplr3w2/t8.jpg)
![[image loading]](/staff/Kiante/skplr3w2/t8.jpg)
STX Soul
![[image loading]](/staff/Kiante/skplr3w2/stx.jpg)
![[image loading]](/staff/Kiante/skplr3w2/stx.jpg)
Air Force ACE
![[image loading]](/staff/Kiante/skplr3w2/ace.jpg)
![[image loading]](/staff/Kiante/skplr3w2/ace.jpg)

Team Spotlight: Woongjin Stars
When did they get so good?
By: Carnivorous Sheep
Woongjin is a perennial darkhorse favorite for the Proleague. A line-up of generally well liked players who like to engage in some creative strategies, particularly in the Zerg department, have led to constant high hopes for Woongjin. Unfortunately, these hopes never materialized into a strong Proleague performance, and oftentimes, Stars isn’t even a playoff contender.
The story seemed set to repeat as we kicked off this new season, with Woongjin resting uncomfortably in the lower half of the league rankings. Slowly but surely, however, Stars managed to climb its way up the rankings into the top four, and has a real shot at making a big splash in the playoffs.
Woongjin is notorious for their inconsistency. Zero and Light are all capable of taking on the very best, but only half the times. Zero can go from taking on Flash head to head one day to losing to a no name B-teamer the next. Light’s TvZ is continuously competing with Flash as the pinnacle of the match-up, but his TvP leaves much to be desired.
Fortunately for Woongjin, they have Soulkey. Lauded as Zero’s successor and the new hope of Zerg, Soulkey gave some good breakout performances, and then gave some average, forgettable games, and seemed to be on track to sink back to mediocrity. This season, however, Soulkey seemed finally to be living up to our hopes and expectations, with a staggering 11-3 record, with one of the toughest opponent lists for the season. I do not hesitate to proclaim that Soulkey is the number one Zerg on the scene right now.
![[image loading]](/staff/Kiante/skplr3w2/soulkey.jpg)
Soulkey’s incredible consistency against immense competition has been crucial to Stars’ success. Veterans Zero and Light, Protoss one-two punch free and shy, and the young rising star hOn_sin are all capable of bringing wins home for Stars. Capped by Soulkey’s dependable victory, it is little surprise that Stars has seen a steady climb in the rankings. The combination of shaky inconsistency coupled with infinite potential that defines Woongjin remains, but it seems one of their players is finally ready to step out of that shadow and unyieldingly realize his potential.
The advantages of a strong, dependable ace player cannot be stressed enough. Even without an ace match, having someone that your team can truly rely on and rally behind is tremendously helpful to the team’s atmosphere. Stars’ playful and relaxed spirit forges a strong bond between the team members, and now, the trusting and collaborative can be manifested into victories as Soulkey leads the charge. Right now, Stars shows no signs of slowing down, and if they can continue with their current level of play, top four is not only a realistic goal, but a certainty.
Right after Newton postulated is Laws of Motion, he postulated his lesser known Laws of Proleague, the first of which states that teams who are winning tend to continue winning. When you have players with unlimited potential, all that is needed is one spark, one little push to convert the potential into an unstoppable force. Potential and momentum have finally come together for Woongjin, and they are looking to tackle the Proleague playoffs with the strongest line-up they’ve ever had. Prepare yourself, the Stars have aligned.

Greetings, everyone. I'll be filling in for Mustaju this week, and I'd like to preface this with a disclaimer: I am the very opposite of clairvoyent when it comes to PL predictions; just check my liquibet score - it's awful. But I'll do my best!
The last time Team 8 and CJ met, Team 8 was in the middle of a monstrous 6-game losing streak, and nobody could have predicted a victory for the league's perennial losers. But win they did, and since then, they've managed to pick up their momentum substantially, while CJ's condition just continued to deteriorate. Although CJ showed a dominating 3-0 performance against Khan's second string players last weekend, it is hardly a sure indication of a resurgence. However, it is far too early to count a potential powerhouse like CJ out of any match.
Team 8's success in this match is going to be contingent on Sea not getting matched up against Protoss, and Jaedong taking down one of CJ's formidable Zergs, as I don't see T8's Toss line as a match for Effort or Hydra. Team 8 will also have to watch out cautiously for Leta, who's been on a roll lately against all three matchups. Team 8 managed to take the edge last time with unpredictably aggressive (cough cheesy cough) builds, which, if CJ anticipates this time around, might spell bad news for Team 8. Overall though, I see Team 8 taking it, as long as Sea doesn't get unlucky again and Killer doesn't play (I'm sorry, but I have no faith in Killer whatsoever now).
My prediction: Team 8 3 - 2 CJ Entus
KT looks to have had Woongjin's number all season, crushing Stars 3-1 and 3-0 in previous matches. But a lot of that had to do with 1) Light getting screwed over in the matchups, first against Flash, and then getting sent out on a map that he has proven twice that has he no real clue how to play on, and 2) Soulkey not getting a chance to get play. If Woongjin's coach can wisen up and stop with the crazy antics and use his best players efficiently (please STOP sending Light out on Outlier; the resulting games are just embarassing), I have little doubt that Stars can give KT a run for its money.
I think a lot of this match will depend on whether or not Flash can take out either Soulkey or Light. Soulkey meeting Stats would be most conducive to a Stars victory, while Light can crush any one of KT's zergs, as well as Mind. Fortunately for him, Outlier will be the 5th map, and there's no way Light will be saved until then. Stars will also depend on ZerO regaining form and not dropping games to Protoss rookies, which, admittedly, I'm not terribly optimistic about. Still though, this season has seen so many insane upsets that against my better judgment, I'm going to give this one to Stars.
My prediction: Woongjin Stars 3 - 1 KT Rolster
KHAN, despite destroying ACE in their last encounter, still has the shame of being the only team to be 3-0'd by ACE hanging over its head. KHAN will take this comfortably, as long as they don't underestimate ACE by overplaying bad players like they did against CJ. ACE's greatest weakness this season has been its lineups. Sending Great out non-stop over Firebathero (who hasn't sat in the booth in over a month and a half), replacing Iris with Canata, and opting for Orion/Chavi instead of ggaemo.
It's been said that their lineup is selected by lottery, but ACE, despite a decent start to the season, has just been digging its own grave with this system. Consider the last match against Team 8. The match went to the final set, with both Team 8 Protosses having been played already, so the last person to come out would HAVE to be either Killer or Baby. Instead of sending out FBH, who is no pushover at both TvZ and TvT, ACE went with Canata. I honestly can't really say anything but "you deserved that loss." So until they decide to actually play their better players, I'm not going to be realistically expecting any ACE wins.
My prediction: Air Force ACE 1 - 3 Samsung Khan
This is the one matchup that I am utterly baffled by. I'll never be able to quite understand how SKT keeps losing to STX, but lose they do. A lot of it probably has to do with STX's impressive Terran line, which has thus far bested the SKT Toss line 3-0 so far. Bisu has been performing relatively poorly in PvT this season, while
The question is whether or not SKT can draw it out to the 4th and 5th sets, but with SoO being suddenly... kind of dependable... it's quite possible. For STX, on the other hand, it'll be vital that Bogus NOT run into Fantasy and flail around helplessly at TvT into defeat for the 38472th time. If STX prepares another volley of meticulously prepared timing attack strategies, they might pull through a victory. Calm showed us once again this week that he is quite capable of using that big brain of his and abusing the maps to overcome what many assumed was a Protoss imbalance. Still, I'm fairly confident SKT has learned from their past mistakes and will finally overcome the unexplainable mental block they suffer when facing STX.
My prediction: STX SouL 2 - 3 SK Telecom T1
Stars vs. CJ has been a rather unpredictable back and forth matchup over the season, so we're going to have to look at recent results for answers. CJ's performance suffered over the second round, and it's hard to say whether or not they'll recover in time to make a run for the playoffs. Stars, on the other hand, experienced a resurgence in R2 and is now sitting pretty at the last playoff spot that they'll be desperate to defend. Given this, I think Stars will have the edge in momentum. Then again, this will depend on the results of the week's earlier games. For the player matchups themselves, straight up, CJ has the advantage. Effort and Hydra are forces to be reckoned with, Hydra especially as one of the few people this season to take down Soulkey.
As Stars is not a Protoss-reliant team, CJ's weak link Horang2 (1-4 in PvP this season, can you believe it?) will be a nonfactor. Movie and Snow will probably appear to try and get rid of Light, but if the Stars coach plays his cards right and Light avoids
My prediction: Woongjin Stars 3 - 2 CJ Entus
Mathematically, STX is already out of the running for the playoffs (unless SKT/Stars/CJ/Team 8 all collectively start to suck terribly), so that might affect their team atmosphere a bit. Still, I hope and expect them to put up a good fight against KT. Bogus has shown us that Stats is far from a guaranteed second win for KT, and with Flash as the only real Terran, barring extremely bad luck, his TvT weakness is unlikely to be exploited either.
Conversely, that means STX isn't going to have much use for their 2nd core player Last, who I don't see being a match for Flash or Stats, or frankly, any Zerg. I'd love to be proven wrong though. If Last could take out Flash, or if STX could prepare another one of its amazing snipes with Shuttle, that would be unbelievable. In the end though, unless STX really controls the pace of the match and gets all the matchups/snipes it wants, I still see KT prevailing.
My prediction: KT Rolster 3 - 1 STX SouL
