Update:
The police have searched the campus extensively, but the reported gunman was nowhere to be found. It seems that they are still being cautious, but the lockdown has been lifted for now.

A person with a gun was spotted in Virginia Tech near Dietrick Dining Hall this morning at 9:30 AM.
Everyone, please be safe! And get the word out, especially if you are at VT - this hasn't been covered by the news yet.
Virginia Tech, the site of a 2007 massacre, has issued an alert saying someone is possibly carrying a weapon on campus.
Regular classes aren't in session at the moment, but there is summer school. The university in Blacksburg, Virginia, is asking people on campus to stay inside and secure doors. The person was spotted near Dietrick Dining Hall.
In April 2007, Cho Seung-Hui, 23, shot dead 32 people on campus before killing himself.

I wonder if the preventative measures they have supposedly implemented since 2007 will be used effectively.

Again? Shit man...can we all just stop shooting each other. Be safe everyone! Hope this doesn't end badly...
|
Hopefully it's just a false report/troll report. They have to take everything considering the safety of the people on campus seriously.

It's more about alerting and general security measures.
It's commonplace now for these types of alerts to be text messaged to all students and faculty, as well as the parents and other emergency contacts. Automated calling machines also call all of these numbers to warn people. If you know there is a gunman on campus, you don't walk around like its perfectly safe. You stay hidden, and then the cops will have an easy time finding the odd man out, ie, the one who is still outside.
Information is the difference between life and death.

Really hope this turns out to be bullshit.

Hope this doesn't end badly... the day human beings realize they are all relatives, since they are from the same planet in a universe of billions of more planet, yes its a long shot but think about it. When that day happens, years 100 at least, later, people will stop killing eachother because it will take time to weed out the idiots that still survive. Till then........ this is what we will have to deal with for hundreds of years to come.

Really seems like a false alarm.

While it may seem like a false alarm, please take every precaution necessary. A preventable incident is not acceptable.

From VT website: "Officers responded immediately to the area but found no one matching the description. Police have encountered no other witnesses reporting this individual or anything suspicious. Law enforcement officers from VTPD, Blacksburg PD, Christiansburg PD, Virginia State Police, and Montgomery County Sheriff's Office are patrolling the campus, continuing to look for the subject. "

^Based on the information looks like someone "looked like" he had a gun? still a nice job to have police over fast before anything would happend.

Lets not take to the streets yet. First of all someone with a gun is not a gunman by the definition of the virginia tech guy in 2007. People are allowed to carry weapons in va, on school campuses they are not allowed but there is still really nothing more then the word of the 3 students yet. Also if there is a gunman again by this point the whole campus is being locked down so lets wait for a story.

Who wheres a vertical striped shirt?
Yeah, I hope it was a false alarm then. It doesn't necessarily mean it is, but I really hope it is.

Agreed. At the very least we know they are able and prepared for such situations.

The definition of a gunman, according to my handy dictionary, is a criminal with a gun. If he has a gun on campus, he is breaking the law, which makes him a criminal. Circular logic arguments aside, I'm pretty sure that would make him a gunman. He's not a shooter, but he'd definitely be a gunman.
