He is pointing out that this isn't remarkable. How is that not relevant? It seems to me that kind of post is nothing but the only type of post that should be made in this thread.
If someone made a thread about a fire bell going off at a school then a whole bunch of people started lamenting about how terrible people burning to death is, and making posts like "oh, no not again, not another fire!" it would only make sense to tell them that a fire bell probably doesn't mean fire.

Why not just a simple speaker broadcast system around the campus, since it easily beats text messages/email anyday. I know that Delaware Technical and Community College has one of these systems. I think some combination of the two would be best, because people who live off campus may still try to go to class in the afternoon.
That is true, good point. I never thought of that.

Quoting CNN
A little after 9 a.m. three juveniles attending a camp at Virginia Tech said they saw a white male who had an object covered by some kind of cloth that the juveniles believed to be a weapon, officials said.
They said the man was walking fast. Authorities have not located him.
I don't blame them for taking precautions, but based on the quote above it appears to me that these three summer camp kids may have encountered a strange creature known as a "grad student." They're terrifying wraiths consumed by the Mathematics that live only for publishing obscure papers. No, I'm not sure what one was doing awake at 9am either.

(CNN) -- Virginia Tech lifted the alert Thursday afternoon it had ordered earlier in day when it was believed that man with a gun was on campus.
Couldn't find the man, so they lifted the alarm.

Holy shit I thought someone bumped an old thread. Hope everything turns out alright.

Latest update via Virginia Tech:
"BLACKSBURG, Va., Aug. 4, 2011 – 2:41 p.m. Update to VT Alerts
The campus alert is lifted. See email or www.vt.edu for further information.
The campus alert is lifted. There will continue to be a large police presence on campus today. Police have not received nor discovered additional information about a person possibly carrying a weapon beyond that reported this morning. The university community may resume normal campus activity. Only Blacksburg campus classes have been cancelled today.
While the alert has been lifted, as always, we suggest that people remain vigilant and report suspicious campus activity to Virginia Tech Police at 911 or 540-231-6411."
Here is the VT page for the incident and further updates: http://www.vtnews.vt.edu/articles/2011/08/080411-unirel-dietrick.html
It appears the police will still be around and monitoring the campus but there may not have a been a gunman as there have been no other witnesses since the initial reporting. I imagine they would have had more leads by this point if there really was someone by their description carrying a gun around campus.

I would be cautious but not overly worried. When an inmate escaped Montgomery Hospital (and armed himself) they were able to track him down pretty quickly. The reason I bring this up is that unlike this situation, there were constant sightings and tips flooding in. I think the lack of sightings s since the initial report probably means you are safe but be careful.

Oh I'm not that worried, I wake up mega late (I live on nerdschedule/korean time) so I'm sure this was long over before I even woke up.
Thanks for all the info though.
