Has anyone else ever felt that way? I feel like I suffer from this mentality more and more as I grow older XD.
For example, I started listening to dubstep back in 06/07, back when you would find forum posts 3000 pages long about wether skream or benga was the better artist. Back when the best songs were just 3 minutes of wobble. And we liked it.*
Today I was in the computer lab the other day and some kids were playing some crappy remix of Ghosts n Stuff and lauging at things like "that drop was dirtier than fingering your sister and finding your dads wedding ring inside". Like, the oldest of the oldest jokes in the book. And to top it off the drop was horribly timed and was shit.
Thats one of those I LAUGHED AT THAT BEFORE IT WAS COOL
I used to play WoW. I used to play WoW alot. From 04-2010, I probably played an average of 30 hrs a week. I used to play WoW alot. I quit.
Then, the other day I was in the common area, and these hot (hot) girls were talking with some guys, and they were talking about how you need 100% hit rating to hit bosses. And how resilience let's them tank heroics so much easier. Not only that, I just learned like half of my cousins play. 10 people at my work play. My 80 year old world literature professor plays.
That's one of those, I PLAYED THAT GAME BEFORE IT WAS COOL.
So I was wondering TL, what kind of moments have you had where you just wanted to say, I LIKED THAT BEFORE IT WAS COOL.
+ Show Spoiler + yes I know dubstep has been around for alot longer than that, but there's no denying that outside of the UK, there were maybe 1k people maximum that would have heard of it

i played SC when it was for nerds.

Every single music thing ever. That's a huge exaggeration. But everything from dubstep to electro to bands like MGMT and Fleet Foxes...
I feel like a massive hipster for saying it, and I am kind of a hipster, sad to say.
Eh, whatever.
|
Isn't that the hippie thing. Where it's cool before people like it and now people are always looking for the next underground thing before it becomes mainstream.
|
It's just the hipster mentality.

Hmm things I liked before they were cool....

No because usually people who say this just make themselves look like huge tools. Especially when it comes to bands/music.
And to be honest noone cares. Do you want recognition for having good taste or being ahead of the curve? Why do you feel the need?
I just dont understand this.
Why not just say "O i used to play all the time" or something that doesnt make you sound like such a tool like "I played that be4 it was cool!" does.
And to people who say "I liked them before they were cool, but i hate them now cause every1 likes em" You are an even bigger tool for letting other people's opinions dictate yours...
I am not aiming any of this at you btw, just saying this is my reason for never saying/doing this especially to strangers.
IF you feel the need just "O ya i used to play that" if you want recognition/to be a part of the conversation. But never drop the "I liked that be4 it was cool to like it" as this will just make people look at you and shake there heads/roll their eyes.
Unless you're a hipster, in which case being a douche is part of your persona, because you aren't interested in whats currently cool, just what you think is cool and no1 else does.
Which is kinda hilarious... is a group of hipsters a paradox?
"We all like the same thing... that no1 else likes yet..." "But if you all like it... are you really a hipster?" It's one of those counter culture paradigms.
"We are cool cause we go out of our way to be different" "But if every1 is trying to be different, are you all similar for having the same goal?"

I used to play original starcraft back when I was 7 years old
P.S.: I'm not lying! That's true I even once got in trouble cause me and my buddy were at this computer lan club playing against each other and it got late and our parents kicked our asses for that :D
|
Wow...those "hot chicks" sure sound like retards considering resilience only affects pvp.....this is why i am against "main stream" gamers, half of them don't even understand the fucking games they play.
For example I ran into a guy at a gas station, who asked if I played starcraft because of my blizzcon keychain and we exchanged info and got together, interesting guy. I smashed his ass and went 10-0 against him before he just started freaking out and getting really demoralized. Yet when i tried to give him advice on his builds(like...not building 3 depots before a barracks...) he would get all passive aggressive and basically say he doesn't need my help.

Discovering something before someone else does doesn't give you bragging rights. Simply enjoy the fact that whatever thing you loved can now be shared by many more people - stop being greedy.
|
I always roll my eyes when I hear that. Who cares who saw the shiney first? If you really liked whatever it was, you would want more people to also like it, so the musician/company/whatever can be supported well enough to continue (hopefully) churning out the good products you like.
|
If I remember correctly wasn't WoW popular from the very beginning? I remember being in like 8th grade and lots of people were playing it back then.
|
I liked Linkin Park and bought their first CD in middle school before they were cool.
|
Naruto! Then I started hating it when it become this festering mess.
|
mostly music artists
"i liked eminem before he was a sell-out"
etcetc.
it's natural for people to feel like they knew it before it was cool. you shouldn't criticize people for feeling that way. we all hate the guys who say "i knew it before it was cool" but when the situation arises and someone talks about sc2 strats you have an urge to say "i used to play bw".
everyone wants to be different, everyone wants to be independant.

Off topic: @peregrimDive- No...its Mine i found it first!
On topic: I liked getting upset when my interests became mainstream before it was cool
|
I think that for something to be good, it has to be cool regardless of who likes it.
|
I thought this thread was going to rant about people that are so insecure about themselves that they try to derive some superficial superiority over other humans because they discovered something first.
You should be happy that something you like gains popularity...
Have some human kindness and be happy for other people that they also found something enjoyable, don't try to lord it over them.

Holy crap, I bought it under the recommendation that they'd be the next hit thing lol

I liked things before people liking them making it cool. I liked things before others in hopes of creating a singular subculture that went against the norm and mainstream culture before everyone else to portray my individuality and independent free-thought and liberty to assess my own tastes without being droned to conform what everyone else liked.
Here's a list of things of what I liked before you:
- I liked wearing my pants really, really low, revealing a large portion of my boxers
- I liked wearing boxers when everyone liked briefs
- I liked wearing briefs before everyone started having a preference before briefs or boxers
- I liked autotuned songs and singers when everyone loved Willie Nelson and Whitney Houston
- I liked texting when everyone was making phonecalls
- I liked generic cliche movies, often involving Hugh Grant, before everyone else started falling for Ryan Reynolds
- I played MMOs before WoW became a conception of an idea and continuously let it consume all my time
- I liked acting like a huge nerd, ultimately humiliating myself, to gain the stereotype
- I respected Koreans before anyone else
- I used flash on my camera before Brood War
Feel free to add your own.
