This is my first or second post, sorry if it's in the wrong place.
Recently, like most of you, I've been playing a lot of Starcraft. My reasoning for playing though is more than just to play a game when I'm bored...it's become a lot deeper than that. Starcraft has kept my mind free of wandering thoughts, and it has kept me from worrying about things that haven't come yet. I'm not too sure about the rest of the community, but this game hits home for me more than anything else in my life.
It may sound like I'm some fan boy who lives in his parents basement, but I'm not. I'm a poor college student with two jobs. I find a lot of people my age (21) going out and getting drunk on Friday nights while I play SC2 with friends and talk theory. Starcraft to me is the cheapest form of entertainment available that isn't self destructive in any way. It stimulates the mind, forces deductive reasoning, and really makes you think when playing. Unlike most other games I've played, I can't play Starcraft efficiently while drunk or high so it keeps me from substance abusing as well. Lately, I've been having a lot of issues with girlfriends, money...you name it, I've got an issue. Playing this game has allowed me to focus on myself and improvement, rather than worrying about the end of the month when the bills are due. I've learned that things normally work themselves out, and I can thank this game for keeping my head straight.
It's not only the game that has kept me sane though. It's the community, the people, specifically this website that has kept me from the pressures of every day society. It's depressing seeing how many people treat each other out on the streets, and when I come to read a TL forum post, or a fan thread, things become alright again. We share our views, our knowledge, and our love for E-sports more than most people share their love for other things. Our passion and determination to keep this going, and to make sure it stays this way is unprecedented. I have never witnessed such a strong community in my life, and because of this site I have hope for a lot of things...mainly society.
I'm single, yeah, but that doesn't matter. I broke up with my girlfriend of one year in January and was really heartbroken over it. Nonetheless I watched the TL attack where TLO did his placement matches, and I was instantly better again.
This game, this site, these people...they all keep me from doing something stupid, and they keep me on track with what I want to do with my life. I find when I meet new women, I tend to blab to them about Starcraft and how amazing it is. Most women actually enjoy that I am passionate about something other than Call of Duty, or Beer...I've even had a few girls try and play the game
Basically, this is a huge thank you to Teamliquid.net and everyone that participates in the success of this site.
Thanks to Nazgul, Jinro, TLO, Chill, Tyler...and anyone else I can't think of at the moment. I've been a long time lurker of these forums...and I've finally gotten the balls to post something of worth.
tl:dr
Thanks a shit ton, you guys are awesome.
One more thing, what has Starcraft done for you? Anything specific? I'd love to hear any stories from anyone else on the matter.
I also apologize if I have a ton of comma splices and run-ons. I've been trying to work on my grammar lately <3

Well, I don't know about this part hehe. I've injured my hand on more than one occasion (couple days ago was the last time) due to slamming it into my desk after losing to something stupid I should've seen coming. Even for over droning for a 4-gate or something >_<
Either way, I'm glad the game and the community have done this for you. I feel like I'm in the same boat here :D

Keep the fun and dont forget to expand

Well I can't say that it's done quite as much for me as it has for you, but I can definitely say that I love this game and its community like no other game. It's a unique experience to be a part of all this, and I love every minute of it. The only thing I'm sad about is that I've really only got one friend in real life that I can share it with right now. Oh well!
Keep on enjoying starcraft, and enjoy life not matter what. It's awesome! ♥

Still working on it I'm on the edges of Master/Diamond at the moment. Getting into masters is taking so long, even if I get great win streaks.
I'm glad this post is getting a lot of feedback. The love for the game is what brings us together, and it's obvious with the response my thread has gotten. You guys are the best!

I can totally agree with that. The online StarCraft community is the best that the world has. I've played a lot of games, but StarCraft's the only one where I'll hear people in the street talking about it and I'll feel comfortable joining the conversation. IRL circumstances that would be incredibly strange, but because we share a commonality, we blend together quite well.
Probably one of the biggest things that drives this community forward is good manners. Although there are some exceptions, the vast majority of SC2 gamers are well mannered. Coming from an FPS background, I can definitely appreciate the gm.

Big up to you buddy. We love people like you.. We need you Much love. -Olivier, Geneva, Switzerland.

Exactly how I feel, everybody that I talk to thinks I am insane for taking this game so seriously. This community keeps me from doing stupid things and even makes me do better things.
There was a party a while ago that I could have been at. At this party, the cops showed up and a ton of my friends got busted and are going through hell right now. Where was I? Watching the GSL finals. For this, I thank this community and this amazing game for making these last couple of months amazing.

Great post! If you really want to feel more a part of the community, keep contributing your views and feelings. You sound like you have your head on straight and I wish you the best of luck man.
What Starcraft Has Done For Me? I absolutely love problem solving. I'm very much like my dad in this respect. We both have a passion for IT and making things work more efficiently. Why do I mention this? I mention this because Starcraft is perfect stimulation for a mind like mine. I love all the problem solving and critical thinking required to play this game competitively. And I get a lot of satisfaction from improving myself on challenging tasks such as the constant maxims of RTS games: making money, spending it, and not getting supply blocked. It very much is a game of efficiency - constantly refining your builds to execute your overall gameplan.
Games like Starcraft keep my mind and my "soul" in good shape. There have been some games I played a lot but did not get any meaningful rewards out of - most noteably, I used to be a WoW addict. That game was the ultimate killer of my mind and soul.

I'm glad you've found the SC community such a positive influence. I've really grown to love it too since joining, I find it's a wonderful outlet for my (as it turns out) insane fanboyism :D

Spread the word of the post then, I want to see what this game has done for everyone else. There has to be a reason we all play it so often, and with so much passion.
I love it. I have actually smiled a few times from reading everyone's responses. I thought I was crazy, but I guess you guys share the same feelings
