2011 International E-sports Festival (IEF) due to open in October

The 2011 International E-sports Festival will be held from October 7, 2011 to October 9 at the Yong-in Sports Complex, with Yong-in City acting as host and the Ministry of Culture and Gyeong-gi Province participating as sponsors.

This year, 200 players representing a total of 20 countries will participate, with fierce competition expected in the games Starcraft: Brood War, Warcraft III, and Special Forces.

The preliminaries will be held from July 1 to August 21 and the elimination round for national qualifiers will be held on August 27 and the 28th. From October 7th to October 9th, the national representatives will play each other.

With a total of $58,000 in prize money, the player taking 1st place in Brood War and Warcraft III will win $10,000, 2nd place will take $5,000, and 3rd place will take $2,000. On the other hand, the winner in Special Forces will win $14,000, 2nd place will win $7,000, and 3rd place will win $3,000.

Aside from the professional gaming competition, other events such as amateur e-sports elimination games, Yong-in Cyber Festival, Yong-in Superstar Audition, National Top King competition (T/N: “top” as in the toy that you spin – this is a traditional game in Korea), and Digital Culture Festival will happen at the same time, making for a colorful, event-filled IEF this year.

IEF Press Conference Q & A

In order to promote the gaming culture and the national e-sports industry to younger demographics, the corporate organizing committee of the IEF (Organizing committee chairman Nam Kyung-pil, member Lee Kwang-Jae) and Yong-in City (Major Kim Hak-kyu) will hold the “IEF 2011 Yong-in Cyber Science Festival”.

In the national assembly VIP restaurant, people such as Nam Kyung-pil, Lee Kwang-jae of the organizing committee, Gyeong-gi Province governor Kim Mun-soo, Yong-in major Kim Hak-kyu attended a press conference to officially announce the event and answered questions in the following Q & A.

Next are the organized interviews:

Since the event started in Gang-neung, Suwon, this is the third time that this kind of event has occurred. How much bigger has the IEF become since last time?
▲In 2006, we invited 17 different countries and this year we have increased that number to 20. This time, Japan will participate in the role of an observer and next year we will invite them officially.

Both countries are leading the event but to make the IEF better it seems like you also need to work with game companies.

▲We are expecting to expand by having Yongin City work with Chinese state game companies and other game companies.

The IEF has been going on for quite some time now and you’ve gotten both attention and neglect. There is worry that the event is politically motivated for existing e-sports fans so isn’t there any long-term plans to develop the event anymore?

▲This is a source of a lot of discussion among us. I think if you wait a bit more, we can show a better image in the future.

The games presented in this event are all Blizzard games but don’t you have any negotiations with Gretech?
▲We are going to deliberate with them through MBC Game.

You’ve given the broadcast rights to MBC Game but don’t you think it’s better to directly negotiate with possible sponsors?
▲MBC Game is managing public relations so we’ll do our best not to run into any problems regarding such matter.

Not only is it spiting the people involved in SC2, but you have to remember that there will be legal issues. You can't really only blame KeSPA for this.
That being said, it's true that it's a bit sad that SC2 didn't make it due to politics.

I was afraid IEF wouldn't happen, it's good to see them continue to support the old games like BW and WC3.

As for SC2, do you really want another event that the progamers have to practice for outside of NASL, MLG and GSL? Especially since GSL seasons are so short and frequent? Or do people just want to see SC2 everywhere. If this is about covering other regions, judging by the comments about NASL and GSL, people mostly want to only watch certain players anyway.

I honestly don't see a problem unless maybe WCG doesn't pick SC2 up.

these were pretty much my thoughts too. And it's not like SC2 can't get bigger just because IEF doesn't include it.

I honestly don't see a problem unless maybe WCG doesn't pick SC2 up.

WCG usually holds an annual vote to decide which games they will use for the coming year, and SC2 seems to have gotten quite a few votes this year. Unless WCG's sponsor Samsung steps into the picture, there is a chance that SC2 might completely replace BW at WCG.

Also, I'm not surprised that IEF isn't having SC2 at this event since KeSPA and other BW corporate sponsors are quite heavily involved in the festival's organization. Also, I don't see BW and SC2 coexisting in the same events in Korea until the legal issues get worked out.

Great that this is still continuing but why does it make it better for some of you who say you are happy that SC2 is not in it? They are different games and have some people are fans of both, or the other, it only makes sense to have a popular game for a mixed tournament.

Some poele just have learnt to accept the legal issues as an issue, its not really that they don't like SC2,they just worry about the ramifications of having SC2 in the IEF.

There a lot of maoning about why SC2 isn't included...have people even considered that they can't include SC2 for similiar reasons as to why ogn and mbc dont host SC2. They need Blizzards A OK.

This is the BW forums. Who cares about SC2 not making it into a Korean festival. Its all foreigner-supported anyways, make some other country or festival pick it up. Its pretty obvious Korea didn't pick up on SC2. Stop trying to force it on us -_-

For an "international" festival, it's strange that they didn't choose any games that are actually thriving internationally. WC3 is the closest game to having a thriving international scene with the scene in China still going strong.

It all seems a bit self-glorifying to me to host a self-proclaimed "international" e-Sports festival when the games chosen show instead that it is an insular, inward-looking LAN party.

Those who claim that illegality is preventing IEF from including SC2 in its roster should note that it is ridiculously simple to contact Blizzard directly and request permission to include it. The reasons for not including SC2 are either purely political (and KesPa has a precedent of asking its players to boycott tournaments due to such politics in the past) or because SC2 is not popular enough in Korea. If it were the second reason, then it is pretty obnoxious and conceited to call such a tournament the "International E-sports Festival" IMHO.

I love how they say that there'll be competition in BW, when we all know that Korea is just going to dominate.
