It is my opinion that the average zerg player does not approach SC2 in the most ideal way. The rules dictate that zerg has the cheapest units, meaning they can be easily replaced. The strength of zerg comes in its numbers.
Zerg relies on its leader. In BW this leader was the overmind, in SC2 it is Kerrigan, who the Overmind brought over to the "dark side" according to the BW lore.
Due to its reliance on numbers and leadership, the zerg are presumably helpless without these things. The focus on numbers undermines the role of any single unit in the zerg arsenal, be it the measly but fearsome zergling or the behemoth but gentle(?) ultralisk. The zerg also come off as mindless minions of their leader, the so-called orchestrator of chaos. Combined, these 2 things are 2 sides of the same coin: due to the zerg's feral nature, the zerg are assumed to self-destruct or spiral down to anarchy without the guidance of a "higher being". Zerg have pretty shoddy living conditions, basically subsisting off the "common welfare". Zerg are usually looked down upon by both protoss and terrans.
In contrast to the brute force/athleticism/mass or "swarm" nature of zerg, Protoss stereotypically is defined by high-intelligence, strength per unit, and high cost per unit. Protoss units are fostered from an early age to fulfill their utmost potential, and to live and die by the established "code of honor". Each and every protoss unit is a high-scale investment. In addition, protoss as a race is defined by its psionic prowess. The Protoss warrior must look deep inside of him, and inside the meticulous and rich history of his people, to find the answers to the toughest mortal questions of all time. In short, there is a philosophical and tradition-based soundness to the protoss race. There is heavy focus on duty, responsibility, and tribal kinship. Protoss are also reportedly to be pretty quiet (according to the terran ear), as they only communicate telepathically and utter no actual words.
Terran is the typical "redneck". Banished from Earth in the aftermath of 2012, when Al Gore accuses the terrans of "creating" global warming, the terrans travel from planet to planet in the solar system, searching for the least inhospitable place to call home. The terrans are known to strip every planet they come across of their resources. The terrans were also referenced by Agent Smith in the 1999 movie "the matrix", where he says terrans are the "virus of the planet, they multiply and devour the host planet". They live by no code of honor, live and die by the beer bottle, seek individuality from an early age, and simply "don't give a damn" about anyone else. Their heroes consist of crazy rednecks on bikes and Mario-look-alikes in giant flying yachts. Terrans are outspoken and are sexually very active. Terrans can also lift off their buildings. An entire base lifting off to relocate looks surprisingly like a flying trailer park. Of course, not all terrans are so aloof. It's a bit like Australia: exiled criminals from Britain sought to establish their own home, but Terrans have to do this on the next frontier -- space. Of course Australians are pretty smart people, but you can't deny all the surfer dudes and girls with fake tans wearing tiny bikinis.
What am I trying to say?
It's pretty simple actually.
Everyone knows zerg is about quantity, not quality; protoss is all about quality, not quantity; while terran seeks an ideological compromise.
But that's not the point.
I sincerely think Zerg is underused...
