GomTV announced today that they have entered into a contract with OnGamenet that would allow OnGamenet to hold and broadcast Korean Air Starleague Season 2.
Upon getting exclusive broadcast rights from Blizzard, Gretech, the company that runs GomTV, has given until the end of August so that the current Proleague season would finish. This would have originally have meant that the currently running Starleagues would not have had time to finish. This new contract would allow OnGamenet's Korean Air Starleague Season 2, the currently running OSL, to finish.
The OSL will also be broadcast on GomTV every Wednesday and Friday.
Furthermore, GomTV and Ongamenet are also discussing possibilities of cooperation to broadcast GSL.

Nope, the currently running Starleague.

good news ;>
ogn running sc2 would be good aswell, but bw first!

they weren't originally allowed to air kor air osl 2?
or do you mean the next osl? or what...
edit: nvm
i did not know that it wasn't allowed...

Wow, what a surprise! (not really)
Broadcasting SC2 on television would be interesting, though. Ongamenet is filled with a bunch of other shows that probably aren't as popular as BW, maybe SC2 could become more popular than at least one of them?
Thanks for keeping us up to date with the latest news.

Speculation so far is that either Gretech will hold hands with OGN/MBC to air GSL, or they might find another company, make a NEW game channel, and broadcast GSL there.

(I was translating this one before I left for Wal-mart, but I closed every window on my laptop (including the translations that I was doing on TL) by accident.)

Should've read more article before I left for Wal-mart =/
fomos's first speculation was that they will have another channel due to time span (only one month before September arrives, aka beginning of GSL), but this will change things for sure.
And yes. 3rd channel will fail big time.
Also, I think the article mentioned in the middle that Starleague Season 2 will be broadcasted on GomTV as well as OGN.

Thanks for bringing us this Milkis. Really happy that we'll see season 2 of starleague.

So nothing is changing? Hooray!

About time they got that damned BW contract done.
|
If nothing else I have to think that GSL aired on either OGN or MBC would have to draw more viewers than locking a guy in a room to fail horribly at Metal Gear Solid while bleating AH AH AH AH..... right? :3
Anyway, glad they've cleared the technicalities for OSL to keep broadcasting.

What does this mean for proleague?
|
I wouldn't say nothing is changing.
Obviously OGN is going to have to pay more than they currently are to keep the league rolling. What remains to be seen is if that will actually have a significant impact. That money has to come from somewhere, and even the well-structured Korean eSports scene is not overflowing with it. Just consider the player and practice partner conditions, after all. I think we can all agree that if this money was forced there instead of toward an already-rich corporation, eSports would be a much better place.
Also, this deal could impact MBC in a negative fashion, depending on what they're willing to do to keep things rolling there as well.

does this mean osl will be broadcasted in English now?
will we see tasteless cast a real tourney?
|
Well at least the casting for a starcraft event on a gomtv broadcast will be good. That is what is killing gomtv. Though they could spend some of that Blizzard cash on sdm and tasteless to do english commentary for us foreigners. That would make sense for a 3rd channel.
