Pony Express Issue 96: Oct. 12 - Oct. 19, 2009

Grrrr warps in at bottom left while ZergLee spawns at top right, they both send their peons to gather minerals and thats where any semblance of a normal game by todays standards stops.

The Caveman zerg slithers forth ( im not racist I swear !)

Grrrr decides to make a gateway and start his gas while ZergLee confuses me by making his second hatchery in his main right next to the first one, and then going for a pool.


Bisu Build ?? Not on my watch you son of a church !


I didn't know that BGH strats where all the rage six years ago.

After starting his pool Zerglee reverts to a more zerglike state of mind and starts his natural expansion, meanwhile Grrrr has started building some zealots to protect his ramp, added a core and is no doubt up to no good.


This must be one of those 1 base builds ive heard so much about


Zergs will be zergs.

After his core is done and he has enough zealots to hold his ramp, Grrrr slaps down a citadel and a forge, planing for some sort of +1 push or whatever protoss players did back in 2003. ZergLee meanwhile has started accumulating a hydralisk force.

Soon after he gets his citadel and starts upgrading, Grrrr puts down a templar archives to get in on some of that storm action, and then starts his expansion, but not before protecting it with some cannons. Zerglee on the other side, has gotten his lair up, and with the help of that den mentioned earlier has started lurker production.

Lurkers are afoot !

Finally, after all that teching and expanding a clash occurs, zerglee slams his newly made lurkers and lings into some cannons and it doesn't go all too well, but he does manage to break through to Grrr's ramp and wreak some havoc but he gets shut down by some storms soon after.

After showing to Grrr that he has enough units to just slam them into photon walls zerglee decides to take another expansion at the top left natural. Grrr decides to build up a ball of furious protoss death.


What can a man say about zergs and expansions that hasn't been said before, if you have any ideas PM me !


Finally, a contain ! gotta love contains.

While all of this expanding and containing was going on, zerglee constructed a evolution chamber and started some upgrades, and has also added a spire from which mutas will rise to the sky and terrorize the local population, oh and also theres this hive thing constructing whatever that may be ! The mutas fly about a bit and manage to wreck a forge before getting stormed, Grrr is still massing up his death ball and has taken his back door nat.

Hive you say ? Why does that sound farmi... oh my god... thats used for ultras isnt it ?

Grrr finally decides hes had enough and breaks out with his fury ball, he strolls out like he owns blade storm and sets up his shiny new expansions. Zerglee, seeing that the fury ball is large indeed decides to invest in some static defenses at his expansion, and take a island.


That is many sunken yes? ( God im horrible someone stop me from making cheesy references)

So that hive i mentioned earlier has finally finished and been used in the construction of a greater spire, I dislike greater spires almost as much as defiler dens, ultralisks caverns, nyduses, and in general anything that needs a hive. Zerglee still has some of his mutas alive and he sneaks them behind enemy lines to form guardians, a sound plan indeed, but he is fast thwarted by some well placed storms, and, would you guess it, a maelstrom.

So pretty, so shiny, there should be more of this !

After clearing up the guardians Grrrr decides to poke his nose about the middle a bit but is greeted by some real big zerglings, using storm and maelstrom again he manages to fight them off. Meanwhile zerglee is up to no good and is planing a doom drop.

everyone loves a good doom drop.

Finally the dreaded doom drop arrives, zerlings pour out, ultralisks make building sized craters as they descend, DEATH RAINS FROM THE SKY !! And then some zealots and archons stop by and just kill everything, the doom drop wasn't really as doomish as expected. But zerglee uses the confusion to his advantage and launches a second attack on Grrrs expansions, and he manages to chomp down on a tasty nexus.


We are way past "This wont end well"


But alas, the doom drop managed to cause this, luckily some zealots came by in time to stop them from doing more.

Zerglee manages to expand 3 more times and is now ready to start macroing up a storm of claws and teeth, Grrrr still has his ball of death roaming the man, and they clash in the middle repeatedly, but Zerglees every attempt is thwarted by maelstroms and storms.


Clash upon clash, on a sea of dead zerglings shall Grrrr set his throne !


Some zerglings managed to sneak by the main force, but you cant sneak by storm.

Zerglee tries to take the second island expansion, and he sets up his hatchery there just in time as a taskforce of archons descends upon his first island with shuttles, this daring commando raid shuts down all zerg operations on that island. Meanwhile in the middle of the map nothing changes, zerglee continues to smash into a lot of storm and mael.


Like the James Bond of archons.


Will zerglee ever learn !

Commando archons descend on the other island in zerglees possession and fry everything in sight, not even the larvae are spared (T_T), at the same time Grrrr takes command over the other island he liberated a few moments ago and constructs a formidable cannon defense there. Storms and maelstroms are still dominating the middle.

I wish I had a island like this, but something more tropical, and with less zerg neighbors.

Zerglee must really dislike his own units because he keeps suiciding them into a wall of shiny protoss steel and magic on the middle ground, he is making no headway and cant hold onto his islands, things are not looking well. On the other hand life is good for Grrr, he barely has to move around the map at all except for some fancy 4 shuttle drops.

Some zergs finally manage to break through the middle, but they dont last long.

Seeing that he cant really do all that much by now, zerglee gathers what little of his force that remained unslamed into protoss walls, takes all his drones, puts on some sad music and goes down with his ship, he slams it all in a straight line into some cannons and storms and then gives up.



If they weren't zergs I'd be kinda sad now.

In the end Zerglee gave all he had for his race, but it just wasn't enough, he kept losing wave after wave of units while not doing much damage, and in the end it caught up to him. All in all not that much of a amazing game by todays standards, but like I said its here more for its nostalgic value, and Grrrr's maelstrom play is impressive non the less.
