This must be a test run of some sort. 32 players and open registration just doesn't make a good combination when the game in hand is StarCraft. Ah well, I hope they come to their senses in the future and host online qualifiers and/or invite top players instead so we can get actually good quality games to spectate.

I guess/hope we can see a bit more grand stuff from MLG in the future.

It's worth noting that all tournaments for all their games in their pro circuit are open (5 a year) while the nationals are closed (1 per year), basically this is the qualifying games for the real tournament.

I see. So anyone american gamers plan on going? Driving cross country isn't that bad. Would suck if the tourney is just filled with local north caroliners noobing it up on stage.

Details about a stream are probably still being worked out. It'll probably take a week or two.

As for the qualifier idea, would you recommend a weekend online tournament? It's one month until the event, after all. Given the timing, holding a two-week ladder with the top X players moving on to a bracket in which the top 32 finishers are invited to the offline tournament, is not exactly feasible.

And yes, with the limited number of competitors, hopefully all of them are top- or high-level players. As far as I know, people outside of the US can compete in this, provided they can get to the event.

Ive been around for the MLG Halo pro scene for 3-4 years now, attended MLG Dallas in '06, '07, and '08. MLG has always done registration for the 'open' sections of their tournaments like this. It is sort of a hassle as it is first come first serve but if people really want to go then they get a pass somehow (in Halo at least).

My guess is that MLG does not realize the following that Starcraft actually has (possibly based on WoW which has been around the league for the last 1-2 years) and this initial tournament size is just an estimate due to their thoughts on participation. So basically it is up to us to make an effort and show MLG that Starcraft will have a good following and it can only continue to grow as MLG certainly has shown with their impressive tournaments they have supplied in the past.

Is it fair to assume they will use the same commentators they did for their King of the Beta Hill tournament? They should at least make sure they pick up diamond players. They can easily check that through SC2.com.

To everyone talking about open registration, MLG Clap, a League Ops member at MLG, had this to say,
If it sells out 32 passes we'll take a look at it again. Remember, this is only regular season events. There will be a national championship.

Qualifier tournament that anyone can join is prob the best way to do this imo. Look at how msl/osl do their qualifiers and learn from that.

Remember that this is a brand new ordeal for MLG, who is making an effort to make gaming a big thing in the United States. They have grown immensly in the past five years and only continue to do so. Halo has dominated MLG since its existance since it is most popular in the US, but as I stated above, if we show them a good turnout things are most likely to change.

The event in NC has a 5k prize pool. You can also qualify for the championship in Dallas by doing well in NC.

In no way am I associated with MLG but from my experience with Halo for the last 4 years I can try to explain..

MLG holds multiple events around the US in a 'season'. As far as Halo is concerned, points are awarded for top teams and spots are held for the top teams each event. Cash and point prizes are handed out at each event basically.. The National Championships lock in the top 7 teams with the most points in the 'Championship Bracket' with 1 spot awarded to whoever registers and makes it out of an 'Open' (or amateur) bracket. Usually, the events leading up to the National Championships have hefty cash prizes, but the National Championship itself is the most rewarding. This being said, Starcraft 2 is being added DURING THE SEASON, which means they may do things differently.

Hopefully they will avoid the dumb pro contracts for sc2.

I think if the tournament sells over 32 they'll either just handpick or increase the tournament slot. They are announcing this one month away so I understand if they want to have a small tournament to begin with. Registration and etc might be different for future events. MLG usually works with multiple tournaments for their season, where players build up rank and then have the top players of the season compete in one last final tournament which usually has bigger prize money.

This.

And I also think the open registration is a little dumb. Watching non-pro matches is a little frustrating.

After Blizzard starts it's pro divisions I'm sure that will be one of the requirements to enter. If you can't make it into the top league online you really have no business showing up to play at mlg. But this is so awesome. MLG will take North American Starcraft to the next level. If it gets popular enough and has enough support the prize pools will get bigger and bigger. Than we could actually see full time pro gamers in North America, who can topple the Asian monopoly of pro starcraft.

I'm an MLG fan (I play halo) but this format seems very limiting. Haven't they seen the potential exposure they could get from the HDH? This should be bigger.

What do people mean by qualifiers? This IS a qualifier, the final 32 or whatever will go to Las Vegas for the championship. Do people really want qualifiers for the qualifiers?
