But those are awful for portability.. their clamp is relatively loose, they don't fold up, they're open backed, and they're quite big...

Other than all that, I would surmise that they sound similar to the DT1350s. It's really hard to compare them because it's like apples and bacon, you can eat both of them but they're for very different appetites.

Edit: I may have misunderstood what you meant by portability. Do you intend to use them on public transport? Or do you intend to just carry them around in your bag, when you get to your destination bust open your laptop and use them? Even then, I'd still rock one of them smaller ones personally.

I do love bacon.. . By traveling I ment mainly putting them in my backpack to take to school lol nothing too intense. I should have made that clearer. I definitely should have waited and shopped around in stores to get a feel for some . I hope they don't disappoint, I'm sure I'll love them though.

One other issue is they're open, so isolation will be pretty bad. People around you will hear your music, and you'll hear people around you.

I'm not bagging on the cans, they're quite good, just I think you're choosing cans for a different situation and trying to use them where they're not meant to be used.

I guess I'll post the numbers: http://graphs.headphone.com/graphCompare.php?graphType=6&graphID[]=2851&graphID[]=1023&graphID[]=513&graphID[]=713
Blue line is the HD598s, Red line is basically like wearing nothing, Yellow are the HD25-1-ii, Orange is one of the best isolating cans.

so what exactly do they do well? Cnet gave them some good reviews and I don't think Cnets ever let me down, they did mention the isolation issue though.

basically, those headphones are meant to stay at home where you can listen to something in peace and quiet where you can neither disturb other people nor they disturb you.

Absolutely awful for outdoor/ ipod listening though.

i have em and love em though, since they're so extremely confortable i can wear them all day and no problem. Also the sound is flat and neutral, meaning nothing is emphasized, good for music with dynamic ranges or for someone who listens to lots of different types of music. definitely not bass heavy though (if you're a dubstep/black metal fan you won't like them)

Ok headphone smarties out there. I currently have astro a40's and really love them. I have been thinking about getting some senheissers or audio technicas, or even possibly beyerdynamic. Not sure which senheissers are good in the $130-200 price level but I know I was looking at the dt 700's or the audio technica ath m50's. If anyone could give me a rundown on the differences between the two and the advantages that would be great. If any of the headsets are better for gaming than astros please make that clear. Also looking for just general good headphones to where around and listen to music with.

Thanks!

LoL too fast for my edit! thanks for clearing that up, and reccomending the 80s, saves a lot of hassle. Now what is the scoop on those audio technicas?

General consensus is that they have a similar sound signature to the DT770s (their mids are a little more present, their bass is just a little rolled off on the end), they isolate just a little worse than the DTs. They're a little bit easier to drive. They're actually quite similar headphones.

The big differences I can see:
M50s are smaller = more portability compared to the big ass DTs.
M50s have pleather ear pads = more uncomfortable in the long term versus the velours on the DTs.

Another issue to point out is the smaller M50s have a lot more ear to pad contact than the DT770s, which makes them uncomfortable for extended amounts of time. And they both demolish (but the DT770s demolish even harder) the A40s for gaming.

Are they both closed earphones? It looked like the dt's were open. Also would either be good for gaming. Finally would a portable amp make either of these headphones just disgusting or is it not worth it at this price range.

Hm I think I'll be ok with that. I could just grab a cheapish pair for school/gym/ipod stuff and have my nice boss ones at home . Bring them out every now and then for some style points. Thanks for clearing that up for me!

Those specific models (M50 and DT770) are closed. I know the Beyerdynamic DT line has different variations of open/semi-open/closed and 5 different impedances, so you can have it your way. I edited my earlier post about gaming, but they both demolish the Astro gaming headset, with the DT770s being a little better than the M50s due to a wider soundstage.

About the portable amp, it does improve them, but it's not like they're completely unusable without one. I have the DT770s and I would say the biggest difference is the bass was performing at.. say 80% capacity unamped, versus 100% capacity amped (along with other changes, but those are pretty minute).

if you're going to be leaving them at home and/or using them for long periods of time, take the dt700s
if you're only going to be wearing them an hour or two at a time or want to take them with you for ipod, take the m50s

personally I can't stand the m50s because they become too uncomfortable for me, so be sure to try them on first if you can before buying. Soundwise they're almost the same.

edit: you don't need (or want) an amp for either of these, unless you get the high impedance version of the 700s

Ok sweet thanks. Really appreciate it. Not exactly sure why these headphones suck to wear out though. Is it because they are not noise canceling or because they are just not great to be moving around a ton/going into a backpack? I have worn my astro a30's around everywhere and they seemed fine.

I would guess it's a combination of high clamp strength, pleather pads, and "small" circumaural form. I've heard people have to tuck in the back of their ears into the pads because they're too small to be completely circumaural for them (that, or you wear them on your ears ala supraaural, in which there is a lot of ear to pad contact.. and clamp... with pleather... sounds like bad news to me).

Edit: Upon rereading, I'm not even sure what headphones you're talking about anymore. But this post is directed at the M50s.

Hi, quick question guys, I've got a pair of soundmagic e10 earphones, but have lost one of the double-cup earbud thingy wotsits. Does anyone know a website that will sell replacement cups (and ship to the UK)?

A lot of times aftermarket tips or tips from other earphones will fit your model. As a guess, I'd expect replacements marked for some other SoundMagic pairs to work for the E10. If nobody here knows specifically, try asking in another forum with a discussion thread on the E10 (anythingbutipod may have one, head-fi undoubtedly does, etc.).

If you're searching, you're looking for bi-flange (or sometimes called double flange) silicone tips for the E10. I found some that fit the description on Amazon.com but not Amazon.co.uk.

Hey guys, recently I've come across some extra cash that I want to spend and I've found that I spend so much time listening to music that I should invest in some nice headphones. I'm not entirely new to the audio world and own a couple pairs of Sennheisers (PC 350, HD 448, and MX85(sports)) but I'm looking to upgrade.

Now I've been navigating these forums and other parts of the net to try and figure out what to buy. I'm looking at a price range between $200-$300 for the system. I'm looking to use these phones entirely at home and I really want the maximum quality sound so that I can try and escape to my own world. I'm a big classical music fan, especially Saxophone centered music. I listen to a lot of solo saxophonists, saxophone quartets, and then the standard classical symphony pieces/operatic works. Additionally I listen to Alternative Rock and Jazz quite a bit.

Looking at headphones within my price range I've taken an interest in Grado headphones such as the SR325i and also I've seen Audio-Technica and beyerdynamic mentioned quite a bit. I'm not really sure which brand would fit my musical preferences better, or if there could be another brand that is even better. Additionally I feel like if I get a pair of cans in this range I'm also entering into the territory of needing an AMP to go along with them. I'm pretty clueless on the AMPs issue, I just want to get the best sound out of my headphones but I don't really want to break my budget.

If you guys can give me any suggestions on headphones, brand characteristics, and whether I should also try budgeting in an AMP I would be greatly appreciative.

Well you're probably looking for one of the better-regarded open headphones in the price range, so...Sennheiser HD 598, Audio-Technica ATH-AD900, Beyerdynamic DT 880, AKG K701 (K601), and so on. Unlike many listeners, the music you encounter may actually have a wide dynamic range and thus a low average volume, so loudness is a real concern. Beyerdynamic DT 880 (other than 32 ohms version, and AKG K701 and K601, will be relatively quiet unless you have a headphone output more powerful than typical.

So HD 598 and AD900 seem more within budget. A better amplifier than what you're using can help, but those won't demand one. There's not enough money for like K701 and FiiO E10.

Others will beg to differ, but I wonder who would be interested in scratchy headphones that sit uncomfortably on top of the ear (Grados), for home use? Okay, that's enough of a potshot for today.

What kind of sax solos, which? I'm mildly familiar with some of the Bozza pieces, Glazunov concerto, Hindemith sonata, Milhaud Scaramouche, etc....but it's been years since I heard any of them. Just out of curiosity.
