well thats misleading

Gunrun had a lot of complaints but I liked him. Gunrun isn't really a commentator like Day9 so it was obvious that Day would talk most of the time. Also his voice is just pure gold.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think JoshSuth posted somewhere in this thread that there was only one comp with SC2 enabled for the commentators which would imply Gunrun was either casting off Day's monitor or the stream itself both of which can have an affect of the quality of the cast itself.

I watched mostly during the first half of the day and it seemed like Day was hogging over the mic a tad bit but despite that the commentary was quite upto the par and I think both of them did a good job.

I can't believe people are bashing Gunrun like this. Of course he doesn't know as much as Day[9] about the game, I never expected him to. He is just there for entertainment and because he has a great voice (I don't know why some people hate it, it is so pleasant to listen to).
Imo the combination of absolute game knowledge+pure entertainment works really well. It could only be better if it would be Day[9]+a progamer casting.

Gunrun is awesome, people need to get a grip. Day 9 is good for analysis and random comments, but I don't like him that much as a commentator.

One thing I agree with Idra on is that just winning a knockout tourney doesn't make you "the best". Really the tourney should be a round robin of 1v1 matches in a best out of 41 (ie 21 wins to victory) format. That way we could be certain (95% confident) that we actually have selected the best player. Given the way that GSL style tourneys are held, we can only be 50 to 60% certain that we have the best player winning. It's basically a coin flip.

We lose most of the information in the qualifying system. We then still lose another 25% or so of the information in the Ro32 and Ro64. For Example, if Idra wins 70% of the time vs Lotze ( dunno their true ratio, just a hypothetical) , he still doesn't make it out of the Ro32 9% of the time (just his bad luck this time). The ESL format is much better for determining true skill.

But Round Robins take sooo long that you have to limit the number of players. The theoretical ideal would be a tournament of the suspected top 100 players that would have 4,950 matches of best of 21 in them in round robin format. That would mean each player would have to play about 750 hours of SC2 in the tourney. (assuming a 1/2 hour game and most matches going to around 30 maps). If you did that over the course of four months, you'd each have to play about 45 hours per week for your tourney matches.

Or the top 50 could do it in less time. Regardless, without putting that much rigor into the tournament system, we will just have to rely on sound judgement sprinkled with intuition to determine "the best" along with some occasional show tourneys to get people pumped and bring in that ad cash.
