You mean you haven't seen Sunshine? It's barely 4 years old. Star Trek hit us 2 years ago and was pretty good too.

This are only movies that take place in space. We had District 9 and Attack the Block quite recently too.

The other 2 were good too. If you want ST that's closer to the book, why not just watch the animated series? There's also some anime that people say is pretty good.

It's too late.

After both of those movies, i'm way too pumped for something good to finally come out. My bar's already set unachievably high.

I might be the only person who disagrees here but Sunshine was a total clusterfuck of a movie. I'll admit that the first 2/3 of the movie aren't bad; visually appealing, decent story, etc. That last 3rd, though... holy Christ. What a catastrophic disappointment and a totally ridiculous shift in plot.

I'm kinda confused by this as I thought it was Karl Bishop Weyland who founded Weyland Industries... Or did he just found the Weyland-Yutani Combined Industry?

Also I so know that somewhere in this film they're either going to have Sigorney Weaver in there as Ellen Ripley or... (which I hope not) have someone else portrayed as Ripley in this... I mean this is not going to be that good of a film if Ellen Ripley's not in it. That was the major downfall of the AvP's and (on another note) the Transformer's series, when they switch Megan Fox with some other random (yet hot) girl... KInda ruined the last film for me.

Anyway somewhere they will do this for sure, but I still like a film with good CGI and as it is part of the Alien Franchise of course no matter what I will still watch it as I've just done the whole run through of the quadrilogy again, ahh love it

I've seen all of those and I haven't been that impressed overall. And I said recently, 2-4 years ago is not recent to me especially since they weren't even that great. Sunshine was good in parts but it was far from flawless, star trek had good effects but the story left things to be desired, Distric 9 took a refreshing spin on things but it was seriously overhyped and I wouldn't call Attack the block a sci-fi movie. It was more a comedy with aliens in it. I just want a classic awesome sci-fi. If Promethious ends up on the same level as the newest Star trek movie I'll be dissappointed. Maybe I'm having too big expectations here but I want a movie that I can watch more than one time without getting bored. I've seen such movies in other genres but it was a long time I felt that way about a sci-fi (which is one of my favorite genres). Since the first alien movies are those types to me I'm having a bit of faith in this considering the people involved making it.

Pandorum? It was pretty good and relatively recent. Moon? I agree though, it's such a shame we've got this huge surplus of generic rom-coms and maybe 1 good scifi a year

Sci fi needs Scott, he is one of few capable people in the industry when it comes to sci-fi, so im not that afraid of Aliens prequel. As for the future of sci-fi, Cameron some time ago said he would like to make a film adaptation of Battle Angel Alita, when the technology is there, but it was before Avatar made a huge succes so who knows if he will go that way. I always valued Scott more over Cameron, maybe Terminator 1 being an exception. Also to all HC sci-fi fans, there is new Blade Runner planned, snippet from wikipedia:

+ Show Spoiler +
It was announced on August 18, 2011 that Ridley Scott was to be at the helm of a new Blade Runner movie, either a sequel or a prequel, with filming to begin no earlier than 2013 and a release for the following year. Indications from producer Andrew Kosove were that Harrison Ford was unlikely to be involved in the project.[157][158] Scott later said that the film was "liable to be a sequel" but without the previous cast, and that he was close to finding a writer that, "might be able to help me deliver".[159] On February 6, 2012, Kosove denied that any casting considerations had been made in response to buzz that Ford might reprise his role, saying, "It is absolutely, patently false that there has been any discussion about Harrison Ford being in Blade Runner [2]. To be clear, what we are trying to do with Ridley now is go through the painstaking process of trying to break the back of the story ... The casting of the movie could not be further from our minds at this moment."[160]

Now my only little dream would be CGI film of Blame! manga

Oh and there is also the Neuromancer, but this one can be a total random...

Does not compute.

Pretty cool, I hope it is similar to Alien in terms of violence and screenplay; it is interesting to see how, for instance, the trailer for Alien is much MUCH more subtle than this one... And from what I have seen from the AvP movies they are all very overt and uninteresting.

In terms of Sci-Fi in general, where this discussion seems to heading, I am much more of a fan of movies that are subtle and, for the most part, cerebral.
2001: A Space Odyssey is, in my opinion, the greatest Sci-Fi film of all time. It is one of the most influential movies of all time, and everything is suggested, not shown, allowing your mind to expand while watching the movie. It is also, for the most part, quite accurate (no sound in space, nothing traveling faster than light).

I also really liked District 9. I think it absolutely brilliant that they made it like a documentary, which starts out slightly comical. Then it eases into a more typical movie, very.. "quietly". It didn't have a happy ending, and I think the acting is absolutely top notch.

I guess because this is more off topic because there was no 'space' in it, but the other Sci-Fis I enjoy are the Matrix, Jurassic Park, A Clockwork Orange, and the first Back to the Future.

I have to agree with the people that think that this movie industry has really dropped off in terms of Sci-Fi. I hated Inception, Independence Day, the most recent Star Trek, that absolutely terrible movie Battle: Los Angeles, the AvP movies... so many bad ones. I really, REALLY hope this one won't follow the trend of showing thousands of aliens in the first 20 minutes, and then the rest is just gore, explosion, lens flare, shaky camera style... etc.

Prometheus is totally ignoring the "canon" of the incredibly shitty AvP movies. As far as Ridley Scott is concerned, they never happened.

You are not alone, I actually bought Sunshine based on how good reviews were and hated it, ended up trading it back in for like 5 bucks cause I knew I would never watch it again. Not a huge fan of ID4 although it was a lot better than Sunshine, thats for sure.

I did see a new trailer for Prometheus last weekend at the theater and it looks insane! I cant wait!
