I've always found the term patchzerg mildly endearing. Like gglords. Sometimes when I say Colossus or Marauder there's so much vitriolic hate in my voice I can taste stomach acid.

It's kind of like being halfway into a terrible movie. You've already spent money on it, you've watched 1 hour of it, so you may as well keep on going, even if it causes you physical pain.
Multiply that time by 500, replace "terrible" with "too hard", and you now have angry SC2 and D3 players

You can't hate something you don't care strongly about. I've met very few people that balance whine and play all three races. Usually someone has a problem in game or a a spectator with a unit and it drives them crazy. So they post incendiary remarks on forums about the units/races.

My opinion has not changed that regardless of game balance and patches (which by the way, as far as I can tell, the game isn't horribly broken) people will still find a way to express their ignorance. Saying "patchzerg" nowadays is just another way of saying "i have no idea who is good at the moment because i don't follow the scene closely lol". Life has been a monster in the making for more than a few months now.
And to briefly touch upon the 2nd part in your post, I think it's the overwhelming frustration that the game is quite close to being balanced but suffers from some very heavy design flaws, that Blizzard are apparently aware of but despite what they would have us believe, they're not really working on a fix for that.
So yeah some people play the game because it's not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, yet they can't help but feel endlessly frustrated at the fact that it could be so, SO much better with just a few changes and tweaks, yet Blizzard spits in their faces, knowing they are going to make a ton of money regardless. >_>
