So obviously you've heard the story now. Glider wins. JenniferESL? Better luck next time. Glider gets a partnership or whatever it is at YouTube and goes on to some level of greater success and he's happy. As well he should be.
I guess I just wanted to call attention to what we as a community have done, time and time again.
I guess let me cite some examples.
* Remember the whole Authonomy thing with Klazart? How the TL community of the time banded together and violently supported his novel? (regardless of actual conclusion) * When in a ridiculously short span of time Milkis set up a ChipIn and got MarineKing what he needed to go to Orlando? * Or when Gus fucked over Amanda in the PPSL and the community (and IGN) chipped in to save her?
I get that some of those were monetary contributions and this was just a click away but I'm amazed at the level of power we have as a community. We really put up some ridiculous numbers when we all banded together to get this ball rolling. And for.... Glider?
Not that there's anything wrong with Glider. He's just not the most notable member of the community. I mean of course he did the wonderful TSL3 portraits and a ton of fanart for players. All it took was for a bunch of notables to go "Hey, we really love this guy. Please help us in helping him."
Anyway, my point. What have we learned? We've learned that our community is big, and we can throw a punch if we really need to. With the combined raw numbers of TL, reddit, and subscriber bases and twitter followers.. we have the power to do something amazing. Hell we got more signatures and votes than most white house polls do. (Not that that necessarily means a lot, but I guess just for frame of reference.)
So then... what? I mean I'm not going to go out on a limb and say we should do something. Because I have no idea what that thing should be. But if it's to further advance StarCraft and eSports? I don't see a problem with that.
I guess I'm just saying that we have a lot of power. And that if there is a reasonable cause to throw that power at, why not?
TL;DR: DivinO is stupid and mushy.

You have to realize it takes a person like Glider though to enable the community powered voting machine. The same support would have never been possible if the subject would have been a random dude and not an amazingly talented artist. Similarly the other examples you named still require that people are emotionally invested in the cause to make them vote at the call of community leaders.

not enough power to get Anna Prosser the community win for Miss USA. =(

Of course not.
I agree absolutely. My point is not to rally behind some random nobody. I am only saying that we have a level of power I didn't realize we had and that if there is a cause that can benefit eSports as a whole that we may be able to make something surprisingly big happen.

If Day9 doesn't win the Shorty Awards for gaming this next year, I'm going to blow up a mailbox.

1. Lot's of control. 2. Screaming and Hollering. 3. Passion.
The elements of a good cheer/support. + Show Spoiler +And sometimes you have to get louder!
I am very glad Glider won. He deserves it out of the 4 videos I watched. Truly talented.

It always boggles me when people use the word "community" or "we" in those circumstances, that is to say using those words as if they were a single entity, with a single will.
I do not think that the "community" or "we" have a single will, in fact I find this idea unconceivable. Maybe this is obvious to most (as I honestly think it should be), but times and times again I feel that those words are used by random individuals in a way that would imply the opposite, in a way that would imply that the "community" would be unambiguous.
I'm sorry maybe this is getting too wordy.
What I mean is there is no such thing as a "community" voice, there are only the sums of many individuals voices, and then it's only a matter of how you count them. As in any vote procedures.
What I also mean is do not steal the glory from the man, "we", the "community" did not make it happen, the community has no self will or unique voice. He made it happen. He appealed to a lot of individuals within the community.
He, with his talent and contributions to this site, made it possible to receive support and blessing from this site officials, followed by users.
Well... I guess I am just being very picky here after all, because what I just described is the community giving support, maybe not the whole community. So yeah, just picky.
Oh well, needed to put it down to realize that, so I'll let it be.
Edit : oh yeah and Glider's ways with a pencil (or w/e the tool) are jaw-dropping (I used to draw too).

The pieces of a great machine are just waiting to be assembled.
I can't wait for SC2 to take over the world! Hail Glider! Hail TL! Hail E-Sports!

That in itself is a pretty big contribution. If u study his paintings it takes several hrs pr portrait. I think he is a deserving candidate, and I'm happy he used TL to furhter his career. And like someone said, he isn't just some random guy from TL. He has been there since the BW days (read his new blog) and he has a unique talent. I wouldn't underestimate a person like that

And what have we learned? The starcraft community and/or TL community has some awesome people in it
|
I voted for a guy who makes some of the greatest youtube content, not for someone or something that just happens to be related to starcraft. Sure anyone can decide for themselves but I personally checked all the candidates rather than blindly vote for ESPORTS(!) and all that bullshit. The blind follow, blindly.

We came together and fought like a community because this time freaking Liquid`Nazgul (a goddess) stepped in and showed us the way. Then other celebrities contributed and everyone felt like "OMFG! I HAVE TO DO THIS OR I'M NOT A PART OF TL!!!"
None the less, the ending result was more than we could have hoped for. Glider won with a landslide victory. and this..... this....... this is why no matter what, TL will always be a family/the greatest community ever.
We fought together, we won together. And all for ESPORTS!!!!
We are all ballers.

So basically, people are Lobbying on TL? :D

Next up on ESPORTS hit list: Anna wins Miss USA, Day9 wins shorty awards, CatZ wins American Idol, Artosis is elected president.

Imo, the power that TL has should be used as infrequently as possible and only for the noblest of causes. Power shouldn't be abused and it's always better to err on the side of caution.
What I'm trying to say is I'm glad TL is run by very responsible people.

although I think it'd be funny to test the power of the community, e.g. collectively vote the shittiest movie in some choice award or something... however just like

TL community is the best online community I have been in. I also remember reading a epic thread about a person that had no money to get home from Europe (netherlands i think) and TL adivised him, employed and gave him some cash/meals and he was able to finally get back to canada.

So what you mean to say is that people from a certain community supported people from a certain community (in this case, being Starcraft nerds). Like that hasn't happened before lol. Now SC guys voting in a poll for the only person who is part of some really large online community of SC fans? I don't see how that necessitates a thread making it out as if it's some awesome act of sweat and blood we put together :S. It really confuses me that people are speaking in such a tone as if we won a political revolution, and not simply a poll :S.
It's great SC fans advertised the poll to other SC to get votes for Glider who was the only name I recognized, and it's great Glider won, but just because he's the only one who comes from a community with numbers worth speaking of doesn't mean we made some extravagant accomplishment like 'world peace' or something. 94% of the votes were either to Glider, or a woman who does English learning videos. She has no big ass online nerd community like we do, and yet she still came close to winning. I mean, throw in FPSRussia/Kyle, and Glider wouldn't have a single chance if we do all the rallying we can and the CoD/BF communities do little to nothing to advertise such a poll. The fact of the matter is we won moreso because Glider is the only person who comes from some kind of community, and a community that is infinitely larger than what all the other people in the poll come from (if anything), than because we are "powerful". For all the "power" we have, Day9 lost the Shorty Awards to a guy I've never even heard of despite heavy advertisement by TL, Battle.net, Reddit SC, and other SC online sites. T_T
I think in the broader sense of things, what we have to thank most is the Korean Ministry of Culture (specifically Kespa), the Korean SC players, and the Korean broadcasters MBC and OGN. If it weren't for them making Starcraft top 3 most popular professional sport in Korea and as a result the world's biggest esport, BW would have died out pretty quickly as just 'another RTS game'. If that occurred, SC2 wouldn't be anything like it is today tbh. And with a site like reddit, which is little more than a more socially-accepted 4chan, which loves drama, immature attacks, and mob-raising, garnering people to vote is hardly a challenge tbh.

I believe it's Chill that said in a recent interview that "TeamLiquid has a fan base that rivals Scientology in fervor. I can shit on screen for two hours and people would love it."
In conclusion, we'd kill a man if Nazgul wish it.

That scene still gives me warm feelings when i remember it...
The amount that the community has grown is incredible, and I hope it continues to grow in a good direction. The Starcraft and TL community is one of the best mannered well spoken groups around on the internet, and one of the fears a number of people have had is that with growth we may lose that identity. So far I believe we've succeeded in keeping it together though!

Couldn't agree more. Glider won that not only because of our "power", but because our power respected him. I guarantee you that we as a community cannot just plug anything and get the same support. We have to truly believe in something and care about it on a metaphysical level for it to aspire to bounds recognized outside of eSports (i.e, if Artosis won an award for best future father, or something. That would win since we love him).

We learned our community is a bunch of lazy asses. If all it requires is a single click, then yeah, that's all fine and dandy. But when it comes to creating a twitter account and voting for Day[9] or getting rek into a poker tourney (which I won't lie was a big pain in the ass), nope couldn't be bothered.
Fuck. It's like people around here don't actually care about ESPORTS.

Actually, what we learned is our community needs leadership. We are capable of getting shit done, the power and potential are there, just that we don't do anything useful until someone rev us up to a frenzy.

We have the power! Lets use it well

We saw what happens when a lot of the big names actually involve themselves. Don't get me wrong, i definitly feel Glider deserved our support, both for his art and for his contribution to TSL3. Last year when the shorty awards where running, i don't remember such a thread (or blog) for Day9. He asked for support on his vids and that was about it. Do i feel we should have had a similar rally for him? To be honest no. The shorty awards are nice, but frankly i don't think they are important enough.
For Glider this was his one chance to get featured on YouTube which probably means a lot for an artist like him. I'm not sure how many portraits he actually sells in IRL and if he can make a living off it (frankly given what i know about art and the market for it, i'd be very surprised if he can), so if his stuff get's highlighted on the tube thats probably a really big step for him.
I have no idea what you mean with rek and the poker tourney btw, guess i missed that effort (or it was in my longish break from Starcraft between 2007 and 2010)

thats a different story - you will never get the full force of our communitypowers to support something like that, because you can have different opinions about it.
Almost everyone would blindly vote to support Glider, because you cant agrue too much about him being awesome
