"With subsequent drawings of the fractal curve, sudden changes may appear" - Dr. Ian Malcolm
Sometimes the smallest of changes can have the greatest effect on the world around them. Sometimes a slight change to TeamLiquid can improve the site by a leap and a bound. Sometimes a ripple will become a wave.
Today we introduce what may appear to be a minor modification on the face of TeamLiquid - it might not even catch your eye at first glance. Over the next couple of days, you'll rapidly see puzzlepieces, the recognizable icon of Liquipedia, appear next to calender entries.
The idea is very simple: clicking the icon will bring you to the Liquipedia article of that event. It's really quite straightforward, and, more importantly, means that you can now reach all the info and current standings of any ongoing event with a single click from TL's main page.
It's one more step towards interlinking TeamLiquid and Liquipedia. It will create awareness, gives editors easier access, and will hopefully motivate more people to both make articles and contribute to them.
The form for submitting events will naturally change as well. There is now a field for entering a Liquipedia url. Please take note of this as you fill out an event's application. The event should always link to the main section of the event, for example this link for MLG instead of any specific bracket or section.
Before I close out this post, I'd like to make one last announcement. Long time contributors Noam, ZodaSoda and blahz0r have been promoted to official TL Staff. They will receive their puzzlepiece icons and will help us through getting used to these changes. If you have any problems with, or any inquiries about, the calender, feel free to contact them or any other staff member.
Let us know any feedback you may have and enjoy the new changes!
fuck yeah. now i dont have to click on recent results every time and search for the tournaments. well done tl.net. making it more accessible and awesome every day.
I noticed it immediately as I refreshed. The NA Playhem Daily didn't even have a link when I first saw it, it was just a dash. The I refreshed, and here it is.
Very nice change! The tournament info section has always been a backwater, so this change means a very subtle but significant move to (1)highlight liquipedia (2)focus documentating efforts of liquipedia as the central suppository of information for all things starcraft.
When I clicked on this link I thought there was going to be a photo of NaDa and Jinro flexing toplesss side by side for a calendar. I was wrong. Disappointed.
Also, this is great, been looking forward to something like this for a while.
Such a small addition, yet so useful. Since the majority of tournament websites are terrible at updating their results this is basically a direct link to the brackets. Great job guys!
AWESOME addition. My only wish is that it could open in a new tab... that way you can click on the puzzle piece worry-free even if you're in the middle of watching the event's stream.

I don't think any of the other links work like that. except for the ads on tl

Hold down control + left-click. Isn't it a setting on your browser too? Doesn't middle click work too?

You could always middle click with your mouse. On pretty much every OS / browser out there, a middle mouse click (scroll wheel click) opens a new tab.
Thank you! I've been secretly whining about how annoying it is to get to some tournament pages. If you search GSL, it won't turn up a link, but if you search Code A, it will, but it won't show the current season so you have to navigate 4 or so pages to get where you want. This will make it much easier.
Fantastic! Before I always went to the tournament discussion thread in the forums and from there found the link to the liquipedia page. This will save me alot of time. Many thanks!
This might be too much work, but there's no better place to ask this.
Could you use the data from the calendar and add the functionality or even make an android or iOS app (could be even paid to support TL) out of it that would remind the users of upcoming tournaments? I would just love to see something like on-my.tv where you could perhaps select the tournaments (BW or SC2) that you are interested in watching and have them highlighted in the TL calendar or exported with an iCal file to Google Calendar or something similar.
No matter how small it looks like, it's going to be huge for Liquipedia and soon enough nobody can live without it. Would it be better if it opened in a new tab or better in the current?
Openning a new tab makes sense in any other context, but just by TL tradition and lack of other usage of tab-out throughout TL, I would be against opening to a new tab.
Very neat! I always look for the thread to the tournament to get to the wiki page, easiest way to find brackets etc...! Sweet addition!

^ New tab imo.. At least I usually click the stream, then open new tab myself to look for brackets/player list etc.. So to have it in new tab makes it so you can click stream and the wiki button in the same tab and the stream would keep going. Minor things but it seems very handy!
Great change. Very useful, and neatly fits into the current design.

I think the design standard is to let users make this choice for themselves? It is easy to middle-mouse click to open something in a new tab if you so desire, yet it doesn't work like that the other way around.
Plus, I often find myself ending up in a LR thread and wanting to access the liquipedia page for the event in question. It'd be slightly annoying if I'd open a new tab, navigate to the TL homepage, click the puzzle icon, and end up with two new tabs opened.
This is so awesome, I've already used it 10 times. All this laziness not going through the liquipedia and getting direct page access Thanks a bunch folks!

I was wondering what the liquipedia jiggies were doing next to the event links. At first I was like whaat, why is that there, that's dumb. But I never thought to click them! This is pretty cool!
I immediately saw the puzzle pieces on the calendar events when I opened TL today. An amazingly small change that I think is extremely useful. No more having to click on the event to find the wiki link on the event information on the calendar. I hope this will also encourage having events be on the wiki.
Ok, here's what happened. Came home and felt like watching some SC2. I look over to the streams and ignore the tournaments because I see the usual Go4SC2 cups and so on. My eyes discovered something new there, however. A little Liquipedia icon made me klick this link. Turns out it's an incredibly stacked tournament. Now watching Jinro vs. Oz.
A million thanks for this small change. Things like this is what I love about TL.
i often click on the event name just to find out what on earth is this tournament about, then proceed to click on the thread link (if its at all supplied) that is usually started by the tournament organizer = not updated frequently i know clicking back would be an option but but but but

Links within posts on TL open a new window, also people watching a stream would probably prefer a new window to the one they're currently in.
I once learnt "only functional design can be really good design" and I think this sentence totally fits for TL`s newest improvement. it`s really smart and I foresee many netizen clicking on that little puzzle button in the future. =) thanks to the whole LP-staff.

also, that way people could get info on LP about upcoming events as well, providing theres a page for them already (as adding a puzzle piece to an already narrow column with countdown until event would be silly ):O
