Most TL staff are like me. Just a normal coloured name+icon. Blue names are given to TL staff who have contributed a lot over a good period of time, and they can also choose to modify their icons to whatever they choose. After being blue for a while you might eventually become Red, which is senior and moderation staff. Also, there are administrators such as hot_bid,riptide,etc, that have the TLnet symbol, and a dark blue background.
edit: whoa, 4 people beat me to it while writing my post. lol
Not quite. Blue and Red are weird. For instance, semioldguy is blue. Except he's red. Plenty of Reds skipped Blue (salle, for example). Red used to be Moderator (and admin, and maybe coder too), back before banlings existed. After banlings Red became also section head or some other special role (disciple does the store). But it's still also Moderator. Some blues are also mods I think. Also some blues aren't blue, for instance Emlary is purple. But not all purples are blue (travis bribed Nazgul).
Basically, Red and Blue are different levels of staff but nobody knows exactly how they are related.

So it's like user Icons for staff? Do you get monkeys if you ask how it actually works?

Yeah pretty much. Maybe I can clear up how they're related. TL;DR at the bottom.
The "Red" level of staff used to refer to forum moderators (as well as what are now "Admins" and, yeah, probably coders).
As TL grew with the release of SC2, moderators took on various non-moderator roles. Different departments sprouted up, like writers, graphics, translators etc. One of these was "Banlings" which was made to help Reds with moderation. Over time the Banlings took on the majority of moderator functions.
Red staff now rarely moderate, instead they're involved in more directional roles, such as being the head of a department.
Thus, currently Red is now sort of a council of department heads + any existing Red staff from before this custom.
Blue remains, as you know, recognition for staff contribution. In the past Blue could be seen as sort of a stepping stone to Red. This is intuitive; the more a staff member contributes, the more involved they become on TL, the more suitable they are to manage aspects of TL as Red.
These days, however, because TL is so large and has so many departments, coupled with the fact that Blue is rarely given out anymore, someone can "skip" Blue.
In salle's case, the previous department head was stepping down, and salle was selected to take over. Thus he went from plain name to Red. Had the previous department head not stepped down, salle would have probably been Blued at some point.
I on the other hand took the other route. I joined staff as graphics and was given a paintbrush. Later I was made Blue for my work on TL news. Shortly after, I was made head of the graphics department and, thus, Red. Prior to me, disciple was the head of graphics. Had I not been made Blue, I would have probably "skipped" it when I took on my role. In fact, the length of time I spent as Blue was about a month or two.
To sum up, as of today:
Blue = Recognition for staff contribution Red = Department head + veteran moderators Admin = People who run TL generally
Neither Red nor Blue is a requisite for the other, they just describe different things.
If you're looking for a hierarchy, it's Admins > everyone else.
(Also, the exceptions are explainable: Semioldguy is Red but people associate him so much with a blue name that he left it blue. Purple doesn't mean anything really. Emlary is Blue, but as a girl her name was made pink/purple. Travis is travis)
I don't realllllyyyyy want to derail the thread too much, but technically it says that you're better than the curve, aka you're better than the median student. There could (and are) entire discussions centered around what on earth gpa and education and learning actually means but...
I had like a 3.4, graduated out of the bottom half of my high school. had like a 2.6 in undergraduate Electrical engineering as well. Ended up doing okay for myself now though, currently in graduate school at UCLA for mechanical engineering.
Life lesson. Don't worry too much about your gpa, just try hard and do great things, and the admissions process will sometimes recognize it
LOL....I was only asking because the song was on Naniwa's stream. Got a gem of a response...staff and this thread never fails! Best part is when he turns around to grind Machine, and his response is akin to "wait what....no fuck that!"
