Already @ 14th page and locked. lol I'm just impressed the thread made it that long. I had figured it would only go about five pages before being filled with enough hatred and anger to force a close. Some people really had constructive conversations going on too. Sad day ![]()

The only nice, or positive talk in that thread was the exchange DPB and I had in quotes. Unless I missed some other positive one, maybe N0ise and DPB's exchange too. The rest of it was people calling each other idiots and using Latin terms that they had to look up at the time they posted their comments.

I feel bad for the people that start the posts (if their intention is actually as they say it is). It must be frustrating to look for reasonable and in depth discussion on an issue that really deserves it, but find only insults and deeply held contempt.

It must be frustrating to look for reasonable and in depth discussion on an issue that really deserves it, but find only insults and deeply held contempt. My mother has a sound policy on such conversational topics. She will not discuss, argue, or get involved in discussing politics or religion. She may either ignore such a conversational gambit, state simply "I disagree" and move on, or laugh and change the subject. Given that most discussions of the two subjects can end in fistfights, gunshots, or even open warfare, this is probably a reasonable stance to take. I prefer an old Heinlein quote myself - "There is no conclusive evidence of life after death. But there is no evidence of any sort against it. Soon enough you will know. So why fret about it?" I think there's a few common themes among people that start topics destined to become closed - genuine curiosity about what or why other people think or do something, a desire to open a dialogue with others to "raise awareness" and possibly gain validation, or to persuade others to their viewpoint. Regardless of the reason, these threads all end up either heading at warp speed for a Godwin's Law violation or potential aneurysm of those posting and reading.

When the thread first started I read the OP stating that the thread would start with the most asinine and inane nonsense of all: "the existence of god". Closed tab, never looked at it again. TL.net is just simply incapable, as a whole, in discussing anything regarding religion because 99% of the people that frequent this forum have essentially no experience or expertise in scholarly work or even the capacity to actually read the entirety of any substantial post. Religion threads are probably the worst threads produced, but maybe economic threads are just as bad. It doesn't matter if the people that flock to it are religious or atheist or otherwise; they all arrive with shit. I'd rather see a thread about the gold standard at this point.

In the UK to legalize gay marriage thread, we had a civil and intelligent discussion concerning religion, gay rights and the state, lasted for at least 3 pages. Blew my mind that it actually happened. Though I guess the shadow of kwark loomed heavy on that thread.

No. Nonononononono How about a thread on Bitcoin and why cryptocurrency is better than and will never be as bad a thing as the gold standard or regular fiat? That can always be fun. Wait, it might require people reading to figure out what BTC is...
