It's against tl rules to advertise your stuff on tl and I think against the sc2 ToS to sell an account. | ||

Even threads that have no games but someone mentions Husky or HD, there becomes a whole argument about how they know nothing and if you want quality commentary you gotta go to Day 9 or tastosis, etc. My guess is during the starcraft 1 days it was much simpler times in live report threads? | ||

TL's userbase has always liked a wide variety of casters. For BW the variety was much smaller — but then again BW itself was less popular. Tasetless, Day[9], and Artosis were probably the most high-profile casters (just as they are for SC2) but there were a bunch of other commentators that TLers were into, including the SC2GG guys. That said, commentators were definitely not as big a deal pre-SC2. I mean, they were controversial and argued-over but not nearly on the scale that they are now...and the difference is big enough that it can't be attributed solely to how much bigger the community is now. Here's my attempt at an explanation. It's not just that BW days were "simpler times". BW commentary was a much less prestigious job, as there were pitifully few paying gigs (this is before YT partnerships, livestreaming, and regular foreigner tourneys). So there was less competition in commentating, and people felt less entitled to top-tier English commentary. In general expectations for and importance of English casting were lower for BW because the game was so Korea-centric. (Pre-livestreams) there was no way to watch top-tier BW (PL, OSL, MSL) with live commentary in any language but Korean (maybe Chinese, on a terrible restream). Believe it or not it was an extremely novel and awesome thing when GOM started broadcasting leagues with an English commentator. That was the first time English commentating on top-flight pro games really looked like it had legs. In short: Korean-casted streams and VODs were supreme in BW. Only now that there are so many non-Korean tournaments and GSL is the major Korean league is English commentary standard and viewed as an essential part of any StarCraft production. | ||
