I was wondering if anyone/how many people would be interested in doing a SC2 lan? I know of a few places in Schaumburg that might be nice, or if anyone has suggestions let me know.

Thanks!

The Chicago area is notorious for not having lans unfortunately. There really hasn't been any big lans there for a while. Any lans would probably generate a lot of attention!

I would know about 10 players who would be willing to join the lan if you know a possible place.

In that case, lets find a place, adertise it, gather 50-100 people and host something with a buyin and a prize pool. Its time that the Chicagoland area had lans as well, instead of just hearing about the other ones.

Okay should we keep it in the suburbs? Cause getting to the city is just a pain in the ass itself.

If we can't gather more than 20-30 or so people, we could try renting out DMZ - http://www.dmzinternetcafe.com/

I've got myself and probably at least two other people willing to come. Maybe three or four depending on school schedules.

It was a great place before the big renovation, so it's gotta be awesome now. Ask about renting if you go!

If it's decently big and/or good prizes there are a few people I know who probably wouldn't mind driving up from central IL

Well, hoping that we have around a 100 people interested, each with a 20 dollar buyin, subtracting the cost of the computers and you're left with the prize money.

I would so come for this! Count me in. This is not for pros only, right? If yes, then we don't need to get 500 people nor do we need to find prizes. To organize 500 people is a mess... if even 8 people show up so we can get a 4v4 in a room, I'm down for this!

Don't want to plug this too much, but

www.iugaming.com

The lan is in Bloomington, IN, but I am originally from the Chicago land area, and I know a lot of others going. It's not too far, especially if you live south of Chicago. There is also a find a ride thread if that's what you need.

suburbs would be best so nobody had to go into the city which is kind of a task, and the people who lived in the city could just come out to the burbs. we should really get this organized! get qxc to come!

I think the best bet would be to see how popular this gets. I know a lot of people in the Midwest have been looking for something SC related to hit up. Maybe on top of whatever the place charges, everyone could pitch in another $10-20 and you could order pizzas and have some prizes or competitions or something

I dunno, just throwin out some ideas

Alright I talked to the guy from DMZ.

He told me he would figure out a price tomorrow, because hes interested in playing in it also lol. He also has some regulars who might be interested. Downside is they only have 27 computers. I went in there today and everything looked nice, they have some couches off to the side with a 360 or for chilling. The place looked comfy and was a nice atmosphere.

So lets work on a date, I was thinking of a saturday from like 11am to ? lol. Gives people enough time to get there and it wont be too early. Some possible dates are 10/23, 10/30, 11/06, unless people would like to do a friday or sunday.

Well, we could have people switch off and ob games while other people play. Basically, the way we would host it, which is the funnest way imo is to divide all the players into groups of lets say 5 and the members of those groups would all play each other. The top two members from each group would advance further. Basically that way, the 5 players would all play each other and we would record everything on paper. 10/29 or 10/30 sounds best since it is the weekend. Like I said previously I can help anyway i can in organizing this.

If I bring my own PC do I get a discount? Is that even a possibility (are there free tables where my PC can go?)
I'm asking since you said he only has 27 PCs.

I would definitely come by since I live in Chicago, as long as it's well done and has some prize ;>
And the competition should be in 1v1 style, not some 3v3 or 4v4 so hopefuly 1v1s and 2v2s only if it will be all set up then just post here guys, ill make sure to come by.

What's the level of play of you guys Chicagolanders? I am a low level diamond - I barely got to D+ in BroodWar - so will I get absolutely pwned in this LAN party?

nGBeast, how about you edit your first post and write nicknames of people that are DEFINITELY going to show up and people that will MAYBE show up? Count me in for DEFINITELY.

1)We need to set up a date - without that, nothing will happen.
2)As for the venue, we need to tell the person how many people will show up. I'm suggesting to nGBeast to edit his first post so that it reflects who confirmed that they're going to be there and who can MAYBE be there.

Guys, we have a big problem here -> This thread has been just people saying "Yes, I can do this!" but there is nothing to "do" when there's nothing organized yet. We need someone to organize something first, then you can get excited. There's been a thread like this started by Milkis (http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=133356) but I jumped on that too late.

I think we are aiming too high for a tournament with prizes when we don't even know how many people are going to show up; we should start with a low number of people, have some non-tournament meet-ups (at a school, at someone's house, not necessarily at a venue) and if it grows from there, we can move on to a tournament. If you're a low diamond n00b like me, having to pay (even $20) for a tournament where you're going to get roflstomped by very good players you met for the first time, this idea is not as appealing anymore.

What other venues are there?

How about we start like this -> Post your Battle.net character to play some games online and see what everyone's skill level is, then meet somewhere for some casual games (I'd rather bring my own computer than pay a regular rate at a cyber cafe). Here's my character ID -> Jungleboy#966

Its Chicago man, there is no good roflstomp players here. At least none that I know of, hopefully iI'll get proven wrong if we get to organize something.

Sorry with school and work I've been busy. We really need to find another venue though. The guy keeps dodging my questions when I asked him 4 times now for a price for the place, he keeps saying "I need to talk to my brother" and its been a week or so now. So if anyone knows of another place let me know or ill keep searching!

Okay after this post, post if you can come and ill make a list on the first page.

How about doing this at someone's house? WE'd have to, of course, bring our own PCs/laptops, and we could pitch in a couple of bucks to the host for the trouble. Would someone be willing to do that?

For around 20 people, which I gather we could get together for this pretty easily, I think that we'd more than likely have to rent a larger place than DMZ anyway. BYOC seems like it would be more fun anyway, since we'd have all of the proper hardware to play anything else that we wanted... but where to do a BYOC?

Rent a small-ish hotel convention center? Find some random warehouse for rent that happens to have a nice Internet pipe? Let's head back to that idea and try to find some good solutions for venue, and then we can focus on everything else. For a basic attendance number to work with, it would be 20 minimum, ~40 max, based on what I can see in the thread.

Also, I will officially volunteer myself to handle the logistics of getting power/heat/bandwidth for any venue that we find... if we enlist the hive mind here and find a freakin' suitable venue =)

Think of schools that might volunteer their theaters/concert halls/etc... since that's an almost guaranteed Internet connection.

Guys in Chicago on Western and Belmont there is Ignite Network
http://www.ignitenetwork.com/

Their site doesn't say SC2 but I know that they have it now.
The place is pretty big and the prices are reasonable.

I know the suburbs aren't very accessible to alot of younger people in the city, college kids like me. And I don't mean to be rude, but getting TO the city is much easier than getting out of the city, What with the Metra and CTA. Just saying if something goes on here, you should get a big enough crowd.

Just my two cents.

I would tend to agree Akuma, it is much much easier for people to get here into the city and navigate than it would be for any of us to get to the suburbs. I mean I could metra out there, but then what, I don't have a car or anything to get from train station to the LAN. On the other hand suburbs people can easily metra in, and the CTA to the location very easily.

I would be down for that location, if they do in fact have SC2

Since it may be BYOC(bring your own computer), I didn't even think you won't have your own car - unless you have a laptop. In any case, how many people are in your situation(no car and want this event to happen downtown?). I have a PC and I will have to drive to get there(city or suburbs), but parking is free (mostly) in the suburbs, while in the city parking is a bi**h. If parking is not a hassle, yea, I can drive downtown. I wouldn't want to Metra in even if I had a laptop.

You wouldn't metra in with a laptop?

If Akuma is right and that PC cafe has SC2, then it isn't BYOC and it's not even an issue anymore

I am very busy with school and work, and cannot volunteer myself to organize this event, but whoever is, check out the website and make some calls. From what I have seen there, they have more than enough room for 30+ people.

Just posting to say I'm definitely interested in this, and have 5-8 friends that would be interested in attending as well. A well organized LAN for the Chicagoland area would pull HUGE numbers.

Yeah the place is pretty big, with a Rockband studio it is pretty cool, also holding this there would provide some other entertainment for people who need a little SC2 break, or if we tourny, get knocked out.

It sucks to live in such a big city and not have any good lan areas around, except ignite which could house a nice tournament.

Does anyone have any "connections" in the discussed LAN centers? If not, I'm willing to place a couple phone calls to gauge interest on their part. Anyone else willing to help me out with this? I don't have much experience organizing this type of stuff.

Yes, there are LOTS of high diamonds that are going to play for a prizepool. We lack someone organizing right now. What prizepool are you talking about?

On November 20 2010 12:26 teol33 wrote:It sucks to live in such a big city and not have any good lan areas around, except ignite which could house a nice tournament.
That's why I was suggesting we start small, non-prizepool, BYOC and meet at a school to play some fun games including 4v4s, 3v3s. Even though there are lots of high diamonds that will compete for money, there are EVEN MORE low diamonds, platinums, etc. that want to have fun at a LAN party without a prizepool. I am very close to making my own thread with this idea in mind and leave this one alone.

What school? Can we organize this (paid or non-paid, most likely BYOC) at your school? Perhaps as part of a computer/videogames club or standalone? Since you have so many people playing SC2 at your school, you can talk to the administration to get permission, establish some rules (i.e. follow all school regulations, no alcohol etc) and reserve a room with enough internet connections where you could BYOC? It does not necessarily need to be a computer room; I wouldn't want to install SC2 on school computers.

I would definatly want to join if a prize pool was put together. I wouldnt really want to do a 3v3 or 4v4 lan party.... I need something more competive than that. Il be checking this thread out to see if any progress has happened. I also know a dozen other possibly people that would be interrsted in a 1v1 tournament in the chicago land area.

I contacted Ignite. I don't have time to organize this, unfortunately. They are definitely the place to go right now. Here is their response:

Hello George,

Thanks for your communities interest in ignite network! By the sounds of it, and perusing the forum link you sent me, you want to set up your own tournament that is simply hosted in our venue. That being said, this is something we might be interested in. Here is a rundown of our facility and how renting our space for a tournament would work:

Half of our facility has 32 PC’s that all run Starcraft 2, the other half has console gaming which leaves no room for a BYOC section. We have a free parking lot that can house up to 30 vehicles, as well as street parking that is also free. For a half facility rental Monday through Thursday for 20+ guests for a total of 10 hours you are looking at an estimated $600. Friday through Sunday would be an estimated $1000. This will give you access to all 32 PC’s including tech support from our staff. If you take a look at our facebook photo albums under “DotA Fire and Ice” You can get an idea of how a previous event looked and felt.

If this is not what you had in mind or I didn’t answer your questions sufficiently let me know! Look forward to hearing back from you!
