Hello all! I know we have had quite a few TL LAN events in nyc and I figured we probably have a bunch of users who go to one of the cities colleges. I figured this would be a good way to maybe organize a LAN or see who else goes to what school.
I will try to update this post as often as I can, as for me I just started at John Jay.
Post like this so I can just simply copy and paste

haha yeah QS I wasn't sure what it was for either. I was kind of wondering who else on TL went to a cuny, By judging how many people there were maybe CSL teams and/or cuny vs cuny stuff :D

Oh on that note, if anyone on here knows how to use blackboard and something about online textbook/reading or something? I am very confused right now T_T PM me!

I am very confused right now T_T PM me! I'm sorta experienced in using blackboard since I had to use it also for my previous univ and also throughout the past 2 semesters. Basically it's a web source program where some profs in classes make you log onto that and access to see your class assignments, documents, etc. Like sometimes, prof will assign you readings that's posted on blackboard for students to access or even have like a discussion board of making very simple thread and responses. I'll answer any specific questions you have regarding it. Good luck!

CSL or Inter-CUNY league sounds good if we have enough. Though the main problem would be location to meet up and practice or have events since we all go to different CUNY schools... I suppose we could rotate but, do we all have laptops or computer labs/rooms that can be used to play SCBW/SC2?
|
Inter-CUNY CSL sounds awesome. I mean, location is a huge problem, but we can always meet up at Internet Cafes (hassle most of the time). First of all, we'd have to ask the CSL organizers if they'd let (I can take care of that later), and then meeting is, once again, a huge hassle.
|
I am not too great at the city yet but one of the things I thought would be awesome about an Inter-Cuny league would be that we are all moderately close to each other so it wouldn't be too hard to find a place to meet and game. Personally I would have no problem packing up my desktop and bringing it some place that we need to set up a "LAN" for an event.
This is referring to Starcraft 2 of course, since any laptop can run BW it wouldn't be an issue. I would be more than excited for either game though.
I was kind of imaging the Princeton/Rutgers type of event which I was fortunate enough to attend. Where both teams met up and played head 2 head with audience and everything. It was a really nice event plus I am sure we would get plenty of people and I don't think it would be hard to get the school to cooperate with it and get a computer lab and maybe even some equipment.
|
I go to St. Johns University, but I'm at Hunter and Baruch all the time cause my friends go there.

What do you want to know about Blackboard? I use it often since Im in CS department.

Hell, if we're serious about it, meeting shouldn't be much of a hassle. CUNY kids usually have unlimited metrocards, right?
It's a matter of how low you want your grades to drop.

But really you don't have to meet in person to practice if it's that big of a deal.
If it's more convenient you can just share a voice chat program like Ventrilo (I know SC2 has a voice chat function but I find it to be very unreliable) and spectate each other's 1v1 games. You can follow up every match with an analysis of the replay and spectators can give their input.
For events we can meet up. For practice it's not entirely necessary to be in the same room.

If anyone wants to get on I usually hang out in RoLClub private channel just let me know and you can come on and we can play.
But yeah, I'd agree meeting up all the time isn't necessary but the best part about this is the actual matches we could meet up for set up a stream, cast, etc. It would be fun event all around assuming we find locations.

lol anyone who wants to actually play feel free to add me. Whenever I am on I wouldn't mind grinding 1on1 in a specific match up so I can actually start getting the feel for it.

I haven't even played my 1v1s since I'm very sporadic with my games and inconsistent. I can beat a diamond player if i'm at my max. haha. ANd what I"ve been reading is very true. We can just skype (23 people max) or TL Vent to practice, it'd be a very good idea.

Haha. I'm probably the only kid here who goes to Lehman College. It's pretty far from the rest of them, but I'm only here for this last year before I transfer out this year. If something happens within that time, I'd like to see if I can show up.

I sent a message to the CSL organizers and they will not allow us to form a Inter-CUNY CSL Team because our schools are too populated. So the only way we can do it is to make teams per school. =\
On another note, we can all still meet up sometimes for events as well as train together if we can.

I think you should at least be able to form pairs of colleges to enter because CUNY schools are pretty small.

On another note, we can all still meet up sometimes for events as well as train together if we can. What the hell. Screw that, they (CSL organizers) REALLY think we can easily get 5 ppl per CUNY school? We should start our own "CSL" then, and call it something like CunySL! Battle among the CUNYs and see which CUNY is the best out of them all!
Or an individual star league style among us CUNY students like in OSL/MSL and at the same time have a team league for CSL somehow within CUNY since CUNY IS ONE BIG SCHOOL.
Still don't get why Inter-CUNY CSL team cannot work when each individual CUNY school isn't an university but a college.... and university is made up # of different colleges where in this case, they shouldn't have CSL by univs but colleges. Imagine that. The CMU engineering school has its own team and the business school on its own if we have to break up into separate CUNYs.... only fair to us then.

I think that each CUNY college consists of 10,000+ students, more than enough for each school to form its own team.

Rules These rules apply for Season 3 (spring 2010). Please note that all rules are subject to change.
Eligibility
All colleges and universities in the United States and Canada can register in the CSL. Players must be enrolled in their respective institutions as students (either undergraduate or graduate) at time of registration. Players cannot be suspended by CSL for previous infractions. The minimum number of players per team is four, but it is highly recommended to have more.
Its only 4 people per team and there are plenty of people in CUNY schools you might have to advertise around your schools to get some tho.
Sure you might have to do a little more work to find people and lead a team but in the end our NYC lans might get bigger.
|
Well if you guys feel so strongly that respective CUNY schools can find 4-5 people to make a team, by all means go ahead then. I do not see that happening for any of you to convince and get people from your schools to play in CSL with you. I tried for the past 2 semesters I've been here in Brooklyn College and I have not found a single SC player committed to play with me nor anyone who goes to TL.net.
And if that was the case, then we would have had individual CUNY teams by now or lots of people from CUNY on TL.net instead of this thread asking if anyone goes to CUNY. Sure each school has over 10k, but most of them aren't us who commute to school, go to class, then go home and also work and live their life the regular average American way.

I also agree with this. It's not that easy to find SC players when your community is so big it hardly enforces social communication. Like QS, I haven't found one in my 1.5 years at CUNY John Jay until this thread first popped up. Note how empty this thread is with CUNY people. If there were really THAT many TLers in the CUNY system, then this thread would hypothetically be much larger.

We should change that. Posters are nice and free to put up.

Posters sounds good. I'm also curious as to how the schools feel about a computer-based club/organization. I plan to ask the campus OSA in order to find out. xD
John Jay kids, we should meet up sometime. :o

Like I said, you guys can try all you want. I've done trying at my school. Besides, it's unfortunate but any type of gaming club/organization cannot exist in my campus. The closest we got is either chess club, sci-fic club or the anime/manga club. And in my opinion, the members in each of these clubs are all creepy.
I don't know how other CUNY schools are but good luck setting up a SC club or something of sort. For me, I'll continue on with my TV Club I'm currently leading to someday wish to have a live show production of Starcraft like you see in PL, OSL, MSL.... sighs...
|
Wait, QS why can't any gaming club exist on your campus? Just not enough people?
|
First time I knew what CUNY meant was the OP of this thread lolol.
Almost went to a CUNY for my masters, but I didn't want to move close to the city.
I'll attend as an honorary member, since my school had about 0 people who played SC/SC2

Since you are going to the CUNY schools to take a course and even if you aren't planning for credits, you get credits anyway...
Also, I've been thinking, while we debate about CSL that is all about SC2 now and all, how about a CBW that's the same thing except back to BW again? Hopefully the organizer would be better there and perhaps we can make a big one team in regards to this..

That's a little silly there wasn't a gaming club in Princeton either, and I had the same thoughts: "if it were possible, it would exist already, wouldn't it?"
Even though most people laughed at me when I started the gaming club and anonymous people (or squirrels, I will never know) tore down my posters, it turned out that the Student Government actually supported us and thought we were cool. Now we get funding for SC events all the time.
The reason why we're not letting CUNY become an inter-CUNY team right now is because of the student body size, which is our first measure of whether we let a school join with its sister campuses. If there are other extenuating circumstances (like student governments out to get you), we'd be happy to listen and see what we can do. We're just hoping that individual schools will try their hardest to set up teams first, especially if it is within their ability to do so.
|
I think the biggest problem that cuny schools have is that the majority of their student body are commuters meaning that people don't get to know each other as well if you lived together in dorms.
|
Gaming clubs were pretty fun in high school, though I rarely joined or attended after school activities. This was only 2 years ago, not that old.
This makes me think when someone asked me in my CS class the other day if there a club for Programmers, I think not... Nobody would be interested since it probably be a gathering of geeks like Def Con or something. D: Not that its not a good thing.
Since CUNY students are over the place and not to mention we dont have the luxury of a dorm or lab area like SUNY or say Princeton students... wouldnt it be difficult to create one?
|
Can you explain? You don't have dorms / lab areas?
|
yea the only cuny that has dorms is hunter and thats only if you are an honors student

There are no designated areas for computers at john jay. There are a few public lobbies, but these computers are extremely incompetent even for holding up casual use which is just unusable for SC/SC2.

You guys are all correct, CUNY is a commuter school and even though there are plenty of clubs to go around, you have like 95% of the CUNY students end up just going to class, then home/work and not do any student activity. That's how it is with commuter school even with dorms.... It's unfortunate but you have no choice but to leave yourself with the at most few hundreds active student which spread out to hundreds of club per college.

We're just hoping that individual schools will try their hardest to set up teams first, especially if it is within their ability to do so. Well, I'll be honest here. I know the Student Government well. In fact, both undergrad and graduate ones since the undergrad student body president is my.... "brother" (note: I don't have any real brothers) and I have a "brother" in graduate student gov as well. I even knew the past undergrad student body president since he was a "brother" as well. So I am well connected with the various student governments at my school.
That being said, like I mention before, I tried but nobody here I know or found are committed to games as much and especially not Starcraft. And despite the fact I could abuse my way and force a gaming club to exist, it would get taken down eventually because of the fact that I would be running a one man show with just me, myself and I. What kind of club would be that then?
And student body size you shouldn't trust in CUNY since like I mention before, 95% don't even get active in student activity, only come to school to take classes and go home. So with that, we have mere few hundreds who are interested in other academic clubs who are mostly ALL SERIOUS STUDENTS who do not play video/computer games....

Hahaha. Of course. Brooklyn College is basically what one would say in between a black (not trying to be racist) neighborhood and a jewish neighborhood. It's to the point that the 2 parties for student government (yes, we have 2 parties but not republican/democrat) are basically like the "black" party (USL) and the "jewish" party (PHD) consisting of students of respective backgrounds that rules the party. However, a change happened this year the greek organizations along with its spearhead of the current president took over USL and completely dominated the PHD party on the election in May, causing the current student body government for undergrad to be led by fraternity and sorority members.... The politics here in Brooklyn College are just weird yet funny....

I really hope the CSL will allow an Inter-CUNY team since all of them are brother and sister schools. Alot of my friends are split up through the CUNY schools. It's quite sad. I don't understand why the counter argument is about the huge student body population. Most CUNY's don't even have a campus let alone starcraft awareness. It's actually harder to find people who play starcraft in huge student populated colleges. everyone just goes to class and doesn't even look at student activities. Anyone else want to add upon this?

Just about 1-2% who are active and all others are... but yea, it is quite sad how CUNY schools aren't treated or act like real colleges, it's more of a farm school really to fatten us up and be ready to be taken out by the time we all graduate..

Starcraft 2 is just a hard game to find people for. If you played ssbm and wanted to find people, all you'd have to do is go to the gameroom and start playing. Same for any other console/board game. SC2 can't even be played at school, so the only way to find people is through social networking. So gogogogo start making mass friends :D

Well, I guess every school can try first, and when we can't we should just protest and throw internet rage at CSL. At least I'm gonna try and put effort into finding people. I'm gonna try photoshopping an eyecatching poster that pretty much would advertise about the CSL. Hopefully it'll work and not be taken down by squirrels/pigeons or staff.

AGIANTSMURF, Certified, and I went to the sci-fi/gaming club today to ask if anyone played SC2. There was an overwhelming response.
So yeah, people do play. We could probably get a handpicked team
|
That's awesome. I'm actually in the process of making a club, if policies permit. Gotta find some members and a proctor. I also need to make sure policies permit, so I gotta get a response from the OSA at John Jay. If anything, we can go and Inter-CUNY competition. :D

Good luck! As a sub-branch of an already existing club, we could actually get sponsers (gasp) for the team. Lots of people in the club have connections, and I feel very optimistic about it.

Hey guys, bumping this if anyone want to join the "CUNY" team for CBW Season 1. It's like CSL but in the original SC BW game instead of that crappy SC2 game!
So if you want to form a team with me and play on random Saturdays or what not in proleague style, MSG ME OR POST HERE ASAP! We need members besides myself or otherwise I will be a 3 man team doing what JD does best: mustachezerg, piratezerg, ozsuckswithoutme... except in this case, I'll be: poorcollegestudent, poorkoreanzerg, brooklyncollegesuckswithoutme! :D
*edit* Also don't forget to post in here:

saying that you are part of CUNY team!

And that's cool, WEB LAB building is a really quiet compared to other places so it's good to play games there!
But unfortunately, I work on Saturdays all day so it'll be very hard for me to do so. Only nighttime I can really play for the moment since I have full days on weekdays from classes, internship, and student organizations + activities. But since you're the first one to respond, I'll put you second in charge of the CUNY BW team!

The thread that started it all
Wondering if we have anyone new that has joined in the months that have passed since this thread was last seen.

I'd been wondering about this... I'm at CCNY (architecture). I don't really play and don't even have SC2 but I saw somebody in the CADlab playing it once. Out of 17,000 students it shouldn't be that hard to find a few for the team.

Wow, I can't believe this thread actually got bumped after all these months of being forgotten and continuing to believe myself as the sole TLer of my school at Brooklyn. But it's funny that there's 2 of you who posted today who goes here. I wonder if I would ever see either of you. Well back to running around!

It was SC2, on his laptop. Not even sure what ProE is.

Unfortunately those NYC tourneys never work for me ever for the 2 following reasons:
1. I work on Saturdays 2. I don't play nor have SC2. I strictly play SC BW and that's if I have time. Nowadays, I gotta focus on my editing and communication skills for me to be a reporter.

Hi, contributing from Baruch College.
Just last semester, my friends and I started up the Baruch E-sports Association club, in preparation for joining the next season of CSL. Our team is here http://www.cstarleague.com/league/teams/288. If you go to Baruch and is interested in joining our club/team feel free to email us. We will be holding a club meeting in the upcoming weeks.

Do you guys strictly play sc2 or do you play BW also? Because I only play BW lol :\
I guess it doesn't make much difference since I need something to do during my 5 hour gap between classes on thursday

I really wish we had a CSL Team, or at least an organized way to practice together, etc. I would go about doing this, but I'm pretty lazy and don't really play SC2 often enough anyways.

We dont have enough (known) strong players to be competitive in CSL, if you're looking for practice games most NYC people hang out in the "Team Liquid New York" chat channel
