Eul, Icefrog, and all the people who worked on various Dota version and DotA clones, they did it all for free, out of their love of the game (at least in the beginning). I DotA is a gamer's game. Not that I agree with the other guy about game design, but one of my biggest perpetual QQs is that the ruleset with BKB is so annoying. It blocks some spells, but not others. Most ults can go through it, but not all. Some spells you can BKB out of, some you can't. I really wish BKB had some sort of ruleset, say: Blocks all stun and damage spells. Or something along those lines, or at the very least put in the tooltip for spells "this spell goes through avatar." It's really frustrating that everytime I see a BKB go off, I don't know what works and what doesn't work because I haven't tried the ~300 spells in the game on someone that is in avatar form. Should I global silence with silencer if BKB goes off? I definitely feel like curse of the silent won't work. If i'm SD, then can i use demonic purge, that works on naix in rage, but will it work on a BKB? How about soul catcher? Disruption? How about tidehunters ult? Will a BKB even take damage from anchor smash? Mag's ult works, does enigma's ult work? Will a BKB take damage from midnight pulse? I guess my point is, there is no obvious answer to what works and what doesn't. There is no ruleset it seems that one can follow. Which to me is very frustrating and extremely annoying. Ah let's see... Global goes through BKB, but if you global, then the target bkb's, the silence will be removed. Curse indeed doesn't work. Demonic purge will slow through bkb, but does not damage. His other skills will not. Tide's ult does not go through bkb. Anchor smash will indeed do damage on bkb'd units. Mag's ult works, but doesn't do damage. Enigma's ult goes through, and also does not damage. Midnight pulse DOES damage units with bkb activated. Good luck =\ I agree it's hard to figure out.

DotA was limited in terms of mechanics because of the WC3 engine. Changing it now would affect the balance, hence it's not that easy. Generally, BKB blocks all spell damage, most ult disables go through with a few exceptions such as Ravage and then there's some stuff like Entangle, Net, Bash, Boar/Skadi slow that goes through. Also, if it works on Naix Rage it'll work on BKB. Just something to learn and deal with.

Am I the only one who thinks it is the flavor of Dota? No one said Dota is an easy game to grasp in 5 games like 'bkb block all spells' etc.. By just playing Dota there is no way to learn the mechanics which is directly affects the game's outcome and joy. Other than that most of the things in dota is simple. After some point you understand which ulti should work on BKB since heroes are somewhat balanced with their skills. If you really want to learn these kind of mechanics, use wikis. Also there is another topic on magic interactions with Linken's, I assume you'd like to uninstall the game after that. You asked if anchor smash goes through bkb, I understand that your basic game mechanics are lacking a bit here, no offense. It is physical damage and bkb blocks magical & pure damage. So it goes thru it. I can say that from tool tips with basic knowledge. Answers: You can silence(global) when bkb'ed but it can debuff itself with activating bkb. CotS(magical) doesn't work on bkb. Demonic purge slows but no damage. soul catcher(pure) wouldn't work. Distruption(magical) doesn't work. TH's ulti is magical and stun, both doesn't work. Anchor is physical , it works. Both mag's and enigma's ulti works but with no damage I think the answers are pretty obvious to me. Edit: grammar, but still lacking. Typo: wtf is physical dmg of mag and enigma. God save me

They want me to hold their hands and tell them what to do all game. I can't be doing that shit all the time, sometimes I just want to listen to music and chillout. But I cannot depend on their individual skill because most of the time they'll end up doing stupid shit. I'm always afraid when they want to play a mid/solo offlane hero because chances are, they're going to feed. Especially when I end up having to support (which I do not mind doing) I try to help one lane, another lane ends up dying. Holy crap yo, I can't be everywhere at once. I have a simple goal of just reaching a 55% win rate. I was so god damn close to 54%. I have not given up, but it just became a lot more difficult. You would think with a 4-5 stack we should be winning most of our games. All I want is to play with some decent/good consistent players, but I honestly don't even know how to go about doing that. A sad day has been had and I now have to go to bed a loser.

Not if the stack is bad, because you will be matched against other stacks or strong individual players. Not much you can do there. Either deal with it and hope they'll improve (which I doubt they will), or don't play with them.

Neither is enigma's afaik. Magnus's is definitely magical damage. Also, all of those things require game knowledge. There's no other way to learn what X does without memorizing it. There's no way to position correctly in a fight without knowing what the enemy heroes can do. i.e. against a team of huskar weaver naix omni razor you can probably position more aggressively than against a team that has SD + leshrac on it, but that's only because you know what those heroes do. Knowledge is part of the game. To add onto this you will rarely lose a game because you didn't know whether the damage on a skill you have goes through BKB or not. You only have to learn that once for each ability unless you're bad at memorizing things.

Curse as a debuff doesnt work, SD ult as a debuff does work. That's because SD ult is an ult. There ARE rules, they just have exceptions.

Gets ganked multiple times because of no wards. Gives up and spends 20 minutes afk jungle. Continues to die due to lack of wards. Ends game with aghs tranquils. Game 2, safe lane feeds 0-10. Enemy team knows how to push. gg. Game 3, team has instapick veno AND axe. Neither gets courier. Our mid eventually walks back to get one at 7:00. Axe comes hardlane, autoattacks, never gets hunger. Eventually tries to farm enemy jungle and gets ganked. Respawns and leaves me solo. Subsequent sven/veno/axe trilane feeds like a mofo, idk how. Game 4. 3 stack of 12 year olds, names in Arabic characters because they cool, yo. All three spamming weird yodelling noises via voice. Muted. Spends whole game diving 3 vs 5, afking jungle when enemy pushing t3, all the good stuff. All three rage and report me at end of game. Why dota. Why.

Edit: grammar, but still lacking The thing that makes one player better than another should be skill based, such as last hitting, positioning, map awareness, and understanding of enemy strategies. It should not be memorizing a list of things because there is no consistent rule. Take your post for example, you tried to explain the set as A works, B doesn't work. For instance, you say anchor smash will work because its physical, but then later you say that mag/enig ults do no damage because damage is physical. See the issue here? The tool tip is wrong then if that's where you got your information from. And just so you know, I knew most of the answers to those questions. I picked them because those are the examples that somewhat contradict each other. Anchor smash as physical damage works, mag ult damage as physical damage doesn't work. Curse as a debuff doesnt work, SD ult as a debuff does work. Also, someone earlier mentioned one of my new favorite examples of the annoyance of BKB: tree's ult goes through BKB, but you can BKB out of the ult. Guys I did a typo there, calm down. I was trying to type faster. Ofc magnus ulti and enigma ulti is magical damage, but disable mechanically goes thru bkb. my mistake here by doing typo sorry. Tool tip is right. Curse is a simple spell you can obtain at level 1, it would be godly if goes thru bkb isn't it? Ulti's most of the time special cases and a strategic place. You choose bane elemental to stop naix or a casual BKB monster and we call it counter strategy. If you get rid of these exceptions, game turns out to be dull and over simple. I think you have to discover the fun in complexity in that case, which gives you strange opportunities, rather then try to get rid of it. Knowing the mechanics and how spells work are parts of being better and gives you an edge to one step ahead of your opponents. Otherwise it turns out who bury much time without thinking & faster are better than the one who thinks strategy more and how to deal hard situations with exceptions.
