I'm also sorta confused why keys are that valued anyway; aren't you basically paying $2.50 for 1 rare and a slim chance of something better? On marketplace you can get 5-6 rares for 1 key...do people actually really value these keys for the small chance of getting a really good item upon unboxing? | ||

First of all, that 1key for X rares way of trading, as always, was started by those traders etc who are basically 'sharking' people who are desperately looking for keys. That kind of 'sharking' is borderline acceptable since valve give out so many rares from some previous events and it has become a common practice nowadays. The thing is old rares are really not wanted by most people now (or most people would have them by now) so it is actually not a bad trade if you could find 5/6 for 1 key. Same goes to new items worth more than old items (depends on the items, rarity doesnt always scale with the price). While the 'buying new set from store to sell for keys' trade has been there since the beginning because when there is a demand there is supply, some people dont have credit card/not possible to buy set directly from shop. And then you can buy the key with less than $2.50 from the steam market. So there you go the history/information regarding your question. These traders will need to sell 5+keys for the set they spent $10 on for example to make profit and some people are willing to overpay the price (especially since some of them got the keys from selling their mystical drop/unusual courier etc). The borderline is as soon as you are happy with the overpaying then it is fine, or just try to find a trade as fair as possible or just wait out until the price drop (like me Q_Q). and ya the basic business run by trader is about using key to open chest for a chance to hit a jackpot (unusual or rare legendary etc) while selling item to compensate their lottery ticket. I personally never do unfair trade. | ||
