Dumb general question, but what's the easiest way to get a ballpark value for an item? Is there a trading site that has market prices listed or something?
Particularly unsure of things like strange vs. higher rarity non-strange, odd courier effects, and stuff like the invoker hood which are somehow quite a bit more desirable than their rarity indicates.

Rarity (not listed rarity but how hard it actually is to get hold of the item), visual appearance and popularity of the hero is what influence price. To get an accurate idea of an item's worth you have to go to a place with a high throughput of trades and read what it's actually sold for. For rarer items that are worth several keys I normally also go to dota2lounge.com, I think their system is a hassle but they have a decent throughput of really rare items.
dota2prices.com have price lists. They're not accurate but they're normally not too far off. I think they often overvalue cheap items. Also, a fair amount of unusual couriers are traded on reddit so that could be a good place to look if you're interested in that. Finally, people who set up "stores" on forums tend to overvalue their items so don't trust those prices.

Not a dumb question at all. As stated above, dota2prices.com isnt too reliable. Although I was surprise to see that the owner of the site was a shark. There is no real way to find the price of item without just simply researching it. I think the best site is dota 2 trading lounge (google it). Although this website has TON of people trying to low ball you so you need to research on the item well. There you can search up on any item in general and just see how much in demand they are in. EX: You look up pudge pants and you will notice that there is many people selling pudge pants for high value and you can probably conclude that pudge pants is high in value. While something like bloodseeker item will probably have 1-3 pages and will probalby all be priced rather low. Since there are a lot of people low balling on this website, it hard to find the price for it but the website and market is driven by the people and would eventually work itself out some how.
The stability of the price on item also tend to waver greatly. I think when the Big Bad Bandana (mystical) came out, it was worth quiet a bit but 1 or 2 week later it worth the same as a bad rare and is not surprising to see it being trade for some medium-high tier common. I will say that during the first week of when a chest is introduced and new item are circulating, they are worth ALOT and is generally best to trade it asap (unless you want) because in a week, it could be worth nothing pretty much same as any other low tier rare. As far as I can see, the prices on dota item always seems to go down as time goes by and hardly ever up if the item it is for isnt for a popular hero. Item that tend to stay high in value over time would be item that dont drop or can not be found in chest and can only be purchase in the store (although some do become droppable over time and value drop). Check dota2wiki to see if the item is droppable/chest/purchase for insurance if the item is valued greatly.
