Interesting.. but does that design really help at all? The 90° turn of the RV05 (exhaust goes up instead of back) makes more sense to me if you're designing around the "heat rises" concept, but that's just me

Fans and airflow/pressure created by them are so much more powerful than that force to the point where it is practically irrelevant for a system with active fan cooling

I'm not sure I could get used to having the window on the right side of the case. That weirds me out more than the upside-down design haha

But I'm looking for something different and that case delivers :D

Looking to build a HTPC/gaming PC that will probably alternate between plugging into a 1080p TV and a 1680x1050 monitor. I want it to be smallish and quiet but without sacrificing too much in the way of performance per dollar. Budget of less than $1000 (Australian) preferred but can spend a bit more if it means a big improvement. Will be playing GTAV, SC2, Civ6 and would like it to be competent for a few years. I have a windows 10 license, a 250gb Samsung 840 SSD and 2 older 750GB HDD that I will re-use. Here's what I have so far.

Case: Fractal Design Define Nano S Mid-Tower Case No Window Mini $105 ITX www.centrecom.com.au

Motherboard: ASRock H110M-ITX LGA 1151 Intel H110 Motherboard $115 www.skycomp.com.au

CPU: Core i3 6100 $160 www.pccasegear.com

GPU: XFX Radeon Rx470 4gb $300 www.pccasegear.com

PSU: CoolerMaster V450S 80 Plus Gold 450W Power Supply $100 www.pccasegear.com

RAM: Crucial CT4G4DFS8213 4GB (1x4GB) DDR4 x 2 $45 www.pccasegear.com

I can't decide whether an extra $100 for an i5 6500 is good value or if I can save some money on the PSU without having noise/quality problems. Or if there are better deals out there. Any advice welcome.
That's why I beat you almost half the time!

Hey, I want to rebuild my current gaming PC. I'm mostly playing DOTA 2, but I want to try out some more games, especially the new Total War and Overwatch.

My current build consists of a Cooler Master 690 II (www.mindfactory.de ) which I think I can keep, an ASUS P8P67 (www.asus.com ), an i5 3000 together with a Gainward GTX 570 www.amazon.de. I also have a 250GB Samsung SSD and a 1TB HD from Seagate. They system is powered by a beQuiet Dark Power Pro p9 550W (www.bequiet.com).

As I said, I want to keep the Case, as well as the HD and SD. I've been pretty happy with the ASUS motherboard and would like to stick to the brand. I would also like to stay with an Intel CPU and nVidia for GPU. Are there some "packs" of those 3 things you would recommend for me? And do you think I have to upgrade my PSU as well?

I was thinking about a GTX 980 TI for GPU. Im a bit lost when it comes to CPU. Is the step from i5 6600K to i7 6700k worth the 100€ ? I can only find older articles about that topic (about 1 year old), saying its not necessary for gaming yet.

The prize should be around 1000€, preferably less.

Thank you for your help!

If you want to use it for newer games in the future, I would go for the i5. Ive been reading some articles which state that the i3 is not enough.

The 980ti was replaced with the gtx1070 which has dramatically better efficiency (~1.6x) for lower power usage, heat output, noise etc and some new technologies. It's usually not worth getting a 980ti unless you're getting a decent one with warranty for a significantly lower price than a 1070.

The i7 6700k comes with a higher stock clock than the 6600k so if you don't want to manually overclock to close this gap then it can be more worth it to get the 6700k. If you are overclocking then the 6600k is a great choice. The 6700k is a straight upgrade with some notable benefits over the 6600k and no real downside if you have the money to get one without cutting anything else out of your system and want to spend it.

Both require a new motherboard and ddr4 RAM (which should be dual channel 3000mhz+)

Are you using a 1920x1080, 60hz screen?

When I built my computer a few months back I held off on getting a GPU because the new generation of cards would be coming out. I'm planning to get the GPU now/soon, and am thinking of a 1070 so I can handle high-end games for a good while. How do you choose which brand to go with? Also, is not a suitable time to buy, or would there be benefit to holding off a little longer?

I think it's a great time to buy a new GPU. As Cyro said the jump in performance/efficiency is so high that the current cards are an amazing upgrade. The next upgrade won't be quite as big of a jump so waiting around for it may be pointless. And there's always going to be the feeling of "I hope something new doesn't come out if I buy now".

I was thinking more short term with regards to card availability and whether price will come down in the next few days or weeks, than waiting for a new generation.

Availability is awful right now and AMD isn't competing above the rx470/480 performance level, i'm not sure how it will change in the next month or so

That's pretty much been exactly my experience. Nvidia has good products out, but no stock to actually sell. Giving AMD a ton of time to catch up.

Yeah, a full gtx1060 is pretty sweet for 1080p60 gaming - if you're trying to go far beyond that on a laptop then you're probably doing it wrong

Thank you all for your input and help.

Yes, im using a 1920x1080 60hz screen. The price difference for the CPUs is between 80 and 100 € depending on the shop, that should be in the budget. I did the same thing with my last build (getting the slightly more expensive CPU) and I think it was a good choice.

For the GPU I found the Gainward Phoenix ( www.gainward.com ). I read some reviews and I made good experience with Gainward before. Any thought about that card or recommendations? I noticed that the card is 28cm long, which might be to long for my case. So maybe I will have to get a new case as well (if the alternatives are about the same length). My current card is a bit over 26cm long and I think 27 is max if I dont want the case to be to close to the end of the card.

Do you have any recommendations for a motherboard? I was thinking about the ASUS ROG Maximus Ranger VIII ( www.mindfactory.de ).

From what I've read it would seem the i5 gives only a moderate improvement over the i3, especially with a mid range card like the rx 470. So what I'm really getting for the extra $100 is some future proofing and the possibility in 3 years or so of doing a graphics card only upgrade. It's an easier choice if I can save money somewhere else. Can anyone recommend a decent $60ish (Australian) PSU?

It depends on what you're doing; some games are not CPU heavy so it doesn't matter much, others such as starcraft 2 or WoW are CPU heavy but will not scale well (or at all) beyond a few cores. It's the games that use a good amount of CPU and scale to more than a few cores as well as the non-gaming multithreaded tasks that benefit the most from i5 upgrade.

I can't comment much on the 1070 models other than the EVGA FTW being quite good and notably better than the superclocked for overclocking

I have a Hero VIII, the ranger should be fine AFAIK - but that's a choice for CPU overclocking, right? You also need a good CPU cooler for that. If not, you can probably get a cheaper motherboard.

1080p60 is fairly easy to run, 60fps is a lot easier on CPU's than 100+FPS. With a system like that there's a lot of room to go 144hz, 1440p or to save some money (think 6600k/1060)
