alright! gonna with Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2133 Memory as it is 2 x 4 and 2133, as you suggested. I'll stick with samsung then thank you for the input.
So this is what it looks like now. Just wanna make sure one last time before emptying my bank account that everything is looking good. Do you have any final suggestions? If not I'm gonna proceed with buying everything today. I hate to say, but it looks ok. Probably
Might be worth a bigger mobo w/ 4 RAM slots, still might be possible to get a good PSU for cheaper

@Cyro
What do you mean by 960m being worse than 950m?
That seems counter-intuitive :O

I said the 960m is a lot worse than the 950 - not the 950m.
The "m" is not the same.

@InfectedGoat
Your system should pull well under 400 watts, so you could go for a cheaper power supply to save a few bucks. I didn't look around much, but Newegg.ca has an XFX 500w at $65 (60-5promo+10 shipping). It's not modular though. Edit: make sure whatever you get comes with a 6+2 pci connector though, not just one or 2 6-pins. I did check for the XFX, it's good.
I'd also go with a cheaper SSD, just because that Samsung looks expensive. Though I dunno with taxes. Other SSDs are marginally slower, may have 3yr instead of 5yr warranty, but average users will just notice SSDs are fast. For my money I'd go with something like the Mushkin Enhanced Eco3 480gb at newegg.ca ($140). Not all cheap SSDs are the same, of course, but the ECO3 is a recent enough generation.
Generally I'd say you look good though.

I see, make sense :D
Anyway, you suggested that I wait until next gen of mobile GPU
When can we expect those?
Granted, we will see some huge improvement, getting them new is still out of budget :S I'd prefer to keep it withing a <900-1000$ budget

So I'm waiting for the GTX 1060 / Radeon RX 480 to come out with proper coolers like this one. Waiting for my toys is hard -.-
|
Next week for the 1060 but I it's going to sell out fast. I'm picking up a 1060 to replace my 760 Windforce, besides the first day, good luck trying to get one before Nvidia runs out of stock. Everyone hoarding those overpriced Founders is already a bad sign.
|
Well I am afraid those Founder Edition ones are gonna be loud / squealy with that single small fan.. I heard similar feedback on the original Radeon RX 480. Waiting for the aftermarket versions with proper cooling
|
I'm never gonna touch a stock cooler regardless of card or make.
|
I think they're gonna offer custom models with the GTX 1060 launch. At least that is what I've heard.

Yeah that is confirmed. Both FE and third-party models will launch the same day. Hopefully that helps with the supply issue unlike what the 1070 and 1080 is facing right now.

I've heard that release and NDA lift is in ~9.5 hours as well

Interesting 1060!
Seems to beat convincingly 480 in most games. D12/vulkan favor 480.
Price/fps, 480 seems to be slightly the better value

Speaking of new GPUs and value, I wonder, what with all the hype, stock shortages, and retarded prices, if it wouldn't be a saner choice for somebody who enjoys occasional gaming on a 1680x1050 screen to opt for a previous generation graphics card like GTX960 to replace the trusty but now hopelessly ancient GTX460?
It probably bears mentioning that I still rock the olden i5-2500 Sandy Bridge. Could this prove to be a significant performance bottleneck with a newer GPU?

There was some tests around that the i5-2500k overclocked (if yours can't, it might be a bigger issues) could be a bottleneck for the top cards at highest graphics.
That being said, in your particular case, going for a lower resolution changes everything! It will be less demanding.
What is your budget? You will probably find some good stuff used (if you are patient).

It depends on the game. An i5-2500 will hold back a gtx460 on Starcraft 2.
If a CPU will "bottleneck" a GPU is the wrong question to ask - you should really be asking if X CPU can manage Y fps on Z game. Some games are easy on the CPU, others are not; this is not related to which graphics card you happen to have in the system.
---------
1680x1050 will get about 15% more FPS from a graphics card than 1920x1080 because of the missing pixels, but that's fairly close. Consoles often use 1600x900 which is ~1.44x lower resolution than 1080p, enough to have a large performance impact.
|
@Chaomatic It depends on what you mean by crazy prices. $200 for a 480 is pretty awesome bank for the buck. Yeah, stock can be hard to find. But it's a LOT more performance than a 960 for like $50 more.
|
@MisterFred Yep, at $200 it's a steal for sure but you have to live in the US for that and, sadly, I don't. In Europe, however, everything is subject to extra taxes and what not plus the premium local stores charge to make a profit which makes for pretty steep prices. For instance, that RX 480, as good as it purportedly is, costs in the ballpark of 320 EUR in my area which is roughly 75% more than what it is supposed to be originally. To put that into further perspective, GTX1060 went up for about 450 EUR yesterday. Some of this is due to the technology being extremely new and highly in demand but I doubt that the prices will budge down by any considerable amount until the next generation rolls along which is why I'm taking a look at the 900 series right now even though I realize that their performance pales in comparison to the newer cards.
@XenOmega I'm not exactly strapped for cash but I find it difficult to justify throwing 3-4 hundred monies at a toy I will be playing with only on occasions. So I'm torn between making do with what I have and indulging myself with a good looking game once in a while. In this regard buying second hand makes a lot of sense, I guess. Though I'm a bit leery of used electronics because, if they fail, I have no recourse.
@Cyro Yep, that's what I'm gambling on: lower resolution to mitigate the requirements. Very unlikely to upgrade the monitor at this point although, as always, who knows what the future holds :-)
