Question, is it normal for prime95 to disappear? When I restart it just continues where it was. Did it run the whole time and just hid itself, or would this be caused by a problem?

These were the numbers after an hour: http://imgur.com/nGFzML7
I followed the overclockers ivy bridge guide.

Hey guys! So I posted in here about two months ago asking about builds, and got some very nice advice that I took in mind. Unfortunately, I got really busy with school, so I put things on the back burner for a while. My last exam was this week though, so I've finally gotten some free time to follow through with things. Here's what I originally wrote for reference:

Hey! So I actually made a post here a little over a year ago asking for advice, and got some good answers, but one thing led to another, and I never actually ended up building a new PC. I swear I'll follow through this time, haha. Below is my original post, somewhat edited to be up to date.

What is your budget?

~$2000 CAD (There's flex room here if needed, and less is fine ) I'm not sure how the current fall of the Canadian Dollar has affected prices, so I might have to raise this a little.

What is your monitor's native resolution?

Currently 1920x1080, but I'd like to be able to scale up to higher resolutions.

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?

DotA 2, Total War games, Paradox strategy games, various AAAs, fighters, Kerbal space program, a bit of everything, really.

I'd like to play on High-Ultra settings, where reasonable.

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?

Software development, So, text editing, building software, testing software. Compiling large projects, either partial or full builds. Running VMs on occasion. I do some work with AI, so this involves lots of simulation, training, long running processes. Basically, lots of memory/cpu hungry threaded tasks.

Do you intend to overclock?

If the benefits outweigh any potential drawbacks, yes.

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?

Is this worth it? Are the performance benefits actually widely supported and cost efficient?

Do you need an operating system?

No, I'll probably end up dual booting Windows and Linux (Probably Fedora).

I'd like to run Linux by itself, but I'm not sure if the support's there enough yet from most game developers. I'll probably just use Windows for games that don't have native support.

Linux is free, and I can still get a Windows license through DreamSpark or whatever it's called now.

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?

I'll need one monitor. This doesn't necessarily need to come out of my budget, but any savings on the build could be put towards a monitor. This doesn't have to be 1920x1080.

I'd probably be using this as my main monitor.

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.

I think I'd prefer nvidia for GPU brand. As far as I'm aware, the nvidia proprietary driver has the best performance under Linux currently and for the foreseeable future.

What country will you be buying your parts in?

Canada.

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.

I'd prefer to buy locally where possible. Probably http://www.memoryexpress.com/ local store. If there's a part not available locally, I'd consider it. I just don't like dealing with returning parts by mail if there's a defect, and shipping is slow.

Memory Express price matches pretty much any vendor that ships from within Canada, so any parts you find I can probably buy at the same cost locally.

I also have two cats and a dog, so anything you could suggest to eliminate dust/hair problems would be good, especially if it could affect temperature regulation or air-flow. Any tips?

Any help or build suggestions are very much appreciated. Thanks!

Like I said, I don't really have any experience with builds, so I'm not sure what I should be looking for in general when picking something like a mobo, cooler, or case for example.

This is maybe a little more expensive than I was aiming for originally, but I think the difference is mostly accounted for by the currency changes.

Given heavy load on the work side (VM, simulation, etc) you may want to consider switching to i7-5820K and X99 motherboard for even more cores. This will of course increase the budget by quite a bit, so consider dropping from 980Ti to 970 instead. At 1080p gaming, a GTX970 is good enough. Knowing that you are planning to play beyond 1080p, but I feel performance/price value is never good at the top end, especially when next gen GPU (pascal) is coming out in about 6mths. I think that money is more well spent on the i7-5820K and save cost by buying GTX970 and be satisfy with 1080p gaming, for now. When Pascal cards come out, you can consider selling your GTX970 and upgrade.

Also, I will probably pick this psu over the one you have, just because I am paranoid when overclocking. Not that the one you pick is bad, but this one is just better http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220gs0650v1. Actually, seem like EVGA NEX is rated quite low, so probably avoid it if you want to overclock. Still safe to use if zero overclock though

general ideas regarding picking components:
- motherboard: look at chipset (Z170, H170, X99 etc) for overclocking capability. Then connectors that you might need (number of USB3.0 or USB3.1, USB-C, thunderbolt, intel/killer lan port, wifi, m.2, etc), then SLI capability if you plan to buy 2 GPU. For overclocking, there is this information regarding VRM that you need to pay attention to, but I am not well-versed in that. Just google the board to find if it has > 4 true power phase.
- cooler: thermal performance, noise, ease of mounting and price. For cheap good air cooler, look for CM Hyper 212, Cryorig H7. More expensive and higher end one, Noctua NH-D14, NH-D15 or Thermalright silver arrow sb-e. I have only tried CM Hyper 212 and Noctua NH-D15 cooler, the Noctua cooler is 10times easier to mount, definitely has better performance, but also a lot more expensive T_T. No idea about AIO watercooler, but they are much more expensive compare to air cooler. Also, better check if the cooler size fit into the case.
- case: look for something with good air flow, enough drive bay and fan mounting for your need, cable management and aesthetic may be? Some case are easier to work with than other, but should not affect decision much

edit:oosp, missed other question.

Based on the advice I was given, I made some changes, and now have this build:

http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/444Z4D

Differences between my first one and this one, are switching out the 980ti for a 970, replacing the i7-6700k with an i7-5820k (Looks like there's lots of room to overclock), moving from z170 to x99, and then swapping the cooler and case. The overall build comes out very close to my budget.

Does this build look reasonable? Anything that should be changed or that could be a problem?

Thanks again for your help and advice guys, I appreciate it!

Wow, CPUs really have static cost. I bought i7-5820K a year ago for about the same or slightly less money even though we have Broadwell and Skylake CPUs now.

The SSD would, of course, house the OS, and some applications.

I already own a 1TB 7,200 RPM HDD, which I would setup as RAID 1 with the new HDD.

The 3TB would be for backup and general storage. I have somewhere around 2 TB of movies that I'd really hate to lose. They're all on my NAS, and then I have them backed up between two different drives: my current internal, and an external 1.5 TB.

The Z170 because I like Gigabyte motherboards, and I use a lot of USB devices at the same time. This has 7 total slots, 5 USB3, and 2 USB2.

It also allows me the flexibility to upgrade a few things if/when I want to: like adding a video card if I decide to start playing games again, or increasing memory capacity if I find that 8 GB isn't enough (which, to Cyro's point: no, I'm not sure I'll benefit from having more, so I went with 8 instead). And with the $30 off for buying a CPU, it's a pretty good price.
I'm never gonna know you now \ But I'm gonna love you anyhow.

Would appreciate help with the motherboard, i have read some reviews but its still hard for me to fully understand. I want a motherboard that supports what i want to do with the computer. Since i need the newer versions of motherboards and i dont want killer internet i guess it kinda limits my options.

So i want to edit stuff, video editing. Make computer games and play computer games.. I dont know all words for what want. Iam not even sure what "edit stuff" really means.

My computer parts that i will buy are these:
intel core i7 6700k
msi geforce gtx 970 4gb
samsung 850-series EVO 500gb
evga supernova gw 650W

So the motherboard i have in mind right now is:
asus z170 maximus viii hero

Would that be a decent/good buy? I can spend more or less, as long as its an upgrade that really matters. Or less if it really isnt big of a deal.

What i truly want to know is if some motherboards are better for the stuff that iam doing. Maybe for example the motherboard i have in mind is missing some key thing that i am not even aware of.

-----------------------

Would appreciate help with a monitor also.
Acer 24" Predator GN246HL is what i have in mind for now since its kinda "cheap".
Its an upgrade from my old 6year old monitor that is very blurry when you look around and so on.

The thing is iam willing to buy a more "hardcore" monitor for the stuff iam doing later on so this is just a "get going" monitor. Would appreciate any good general recommendations and so on if this doesnt cut it.

I see, that makes sense. As for USBs my H170 provides four 3.0 and two 2.0 and the case provides 4 more. Then again I suppose you never want to wish you had I had one more USB port and the price between a Z170 and H170 isn't much.

What is your budget?
$1200-1400 USD

What is your monitor's native resolution?
1440x900, but I plan to buy a second one to dual-screen. I haven't considered what to buy yet.

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
Not really sure since my current computer hasn't been able to run a lot of recent games. I tried to play Tera and FF14, for example, and couldn't without a crippling amount of lag. So I'd want to be able to play anything current (and preferably future) without worries at high settings as well as emulators. I want to be able to stream as well.

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Probably nothing demanding. Audio recording/editing, gene analysis programs for work, photoshop.

Do you intend to overclock?
No

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No

Do you need an operating system?
Yes

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
As stated above, I'd like to buy a 2nd monitor to dual screen. I also plan to upgrade my keyboard, mouse, and speakers. None of these are part of the budget and will be considered on an individual basis. I'm not too concerned about getting help with these, but if you want to comment on them, feel free to.

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
No

This is a build I threw together with some very limited knowledge of picking parts.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/9p8Vqs

Cooler, motherboard, and power supply are definitely the ones I chose most blindly. I've never built a PC before so I'm pretty ignorant about stuff like compatibility and power issues, and my hardware knowledge is pretty outdated too. Any help is appreciated.

Your PSU is like 2x what you actually need. There's not really a whole lot to look at in terms of compatibility, pretty much just the CPU/RAM and motherboard (which are compatible there). From what I've been hearing lately, there are some real-world performance gains to be had with overclocking RAM, and since you're already going for an OC build you might as well do that too (i.e. get RAM that supports higher clocks).

That's last gen stuff - current gen is 6600k, z170, ddr4

770 was replaced by the 960

850 evo would probably be better than pro

cooler is not worth the money - www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099 , www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4UF30R0134 etc

and a 6600k + 960 at overclocks would put a good 450w PSU at about 40-50% load while loading everything

That power supply is pretty low tier, especially for overclocking. Can switch to this:
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220g20550y1
or http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220gs0550v1
these are cheaper and much better quality

Also, may be DDR4-3000 or 3200 for small speed increase, depending on price.

so maybe different parts (6600 rather than 6600k, different mobo, 2133 ram, stock cooler)

I checked pcpartpicker a few days ago and 8GB of 3000c15@1.35v RAM was $4 more than 8GB of 2133c15@1.2v

@Cyro: true, I missed the earlier post. But some ppl still prefer the K parts just for "future-proof", like with the 2500K. Anyway, I should have asked that. Also, pcpartpicker list seem to be filtered by micro-center, and a lot of parts are either not available there, or no price, so not sure how things fit into the budget

3 new Skylake processors with Iris Pro 580 & 128mb L4 cache:
i5-6585R $255
i5-6685R $280
i7-6785R $370

anandtech
+ Show Spoiler +
Another important aspect of Intel’s Skylake CPUs with high-end iGPUs is their eDRAM, which means the processors also gain the code name 'Crystal Well'. The eDRAM for Skylake is different to that found in previous Crystal Well implementations: in the last generation, the eDRAM acted as a victim cache to the L3 cache, meaning that evicted cache lines from L3 would add up in the eDRAM and be quick for re-reading without having to access main memory. The downside to this is that data could not end up in eDRAM without being used first, giving initial data read latencies the same performance as previous processors. Ultimately this is still good for graphics and gaming, where textures are re-read from memory frequently. The new arrangement for the eDRAM in these Skylake processors has placed the eDRAM in a different part of the chain, between the System Agent and the DDR memory. This means that the eDRAM acts as a DRAM buffer, with 50 GBps bandwidth in each direction to the LLC, but is also accessible for early reads/writes by any device that needs memory access through the system agent (i.e. anything through PCIe). Previously this was not possible, but now it means that Skylake's eDRAM implementation should offer a speedup in many more scenarios that before.

I wonder if this cache will do what Broadwell did, if so they will most likely be great options for gaming rigs. That along with their intended purpose of all-in-one stuff. The i7-6785R for example might have lower turbo speeds than the i7-6700k but it should still be faster for this purpose.
Too weird to live, too rare to die.

Available now is pretty nice. If they're unlocked then they should replace the 6600k/6700k as the fastest CPU's for some tasks
