Hello, I wondered if anyone could critique the following build? pcpartpicker.com
No intention of overclocking or streaming afaik, just gonna be used for gaming

Also gonna need a wi-fi adapter, is there any difference if i were to just go pick up one of the cheapest usb things i see?

The computer would be bought from komplett.no and would cost about 2200USD

Budget isnt super important, but obviously if you can suggest something that's gonna run modern AAA titles very well and still save some money compared to this that's great

(The build was put together by customizing one of the pre-built computers,, and is thus limited to the parts offered here: www.komplett.no)

EDIT: Fixed, thanks for pointing out

WiFi card adapters can have problems when you're (re)installing your OS, at least mine did, so avoiding those is great. Obviously for gaming WiFi is generally not preferred but if you must, I would research on the adapter considering the difference between some of the 802.11 n/a/b/g versions. Mostly depends on your router's signal in that case.

550W PSU seems a bit on the low side, but if their build thinks that it's fine I'm not sure of the exact power requirements of every part. 8GB RAM is definitely the bottleneck performance-wise. For AAA titles nowadays you probably want 16GB RAM to run them at the highest settings consistently.

If you're not overclocking, you can go down the the i5 6600 and save some money there. The difference between it and the one in your build is that the K means that you can overclock it. The 970 is a great card, and if you don't have to install it yourself, it shouldn't matter what case you choose.

Hopefully they install Windows for you before it is shipped, otherwise the lack of a CD Drive would necessitate getting a USB with the Windows 10 installation files on it from someone. Not a difficult task, but annoying nonetheless.

I have a similar (if not the exact same) BenQ 144hz 24" monitor and they are amazing. You will not be disappointed in that regard. Likewise, the CPU cooler, mobo, and drives look perfectly workable. I'd say 2TB is overkill but it seems like there aren't many options that are cheaper on the website.

I'd recommend buying the parts yourself and learning to build it, though, as you'd surely save even more money on the build and also have many more brand options on things like the HDD and RAM to choose from, but if you're set on letting komplett do it for you then you've got a pretty decent list at least.

550W PSU seems a bit on the low side

OC 6600k (1.4v) - ~140w
OC 970 (1.225v) - ~200w

550 is fine, even 450 is pretty fine :D

If you're going z170/overclocking/whatever, grab some RAM at least around as fast as 3000c15. It offers significant performance benefits in more than a few games now.

Hey Cyro and crew, I have a bit of a dilemma. This is my PSU: https://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-100w10500kr

The problem I am having is regarding power to my PC, power that is not grounded. It is not grounded because in Thailand they do not ground their buildings. All outlets are two slots, without the grounding slot.

What this means is that PC cases can shock the hell out of you and probably worse. I use a surge protector and I will go out to buy a UPS today, but the question I have is something I cannot explain.

For some reason, if I use two surge protectors instead of just one, the static and shock from my case completely disappears. However, if I just use one, then my case shocks the crap out of me.

1. Why does this happen? Why does having two surge protectors remove the static electricity?

2. Is there anything else, other than surge protectors and power strips and UPS that can help me from blowing up my PC? I am pretty afraid because there is no ground. For instance, is there something I can do about the location of my PC? On the floor? Wood table? etc?

3. Also, what does it mean when I tried hooking up the VGA cable to the back of my PC, and it shocked me. The VGA cable wasn't even plugged into the monitor yet...(PC was not powered on but was hooked up to the surge protector)

I am sorry I am very aloof when it comes to power setups since in the US I never really had to think about this since the power is safe and clean. I took it for granted.

If you could enlighten me and give me more advice on how I should set up my PC, I would greatly appreciate it.

Whats the main difference between the Samsung 850 EVO vs the Samsung 850 EVO m.2? I've been told that the m2 is faster than the regular SSD model.. and its cheaper aswell?

Regular 850 evo is a 2.5" sata drive

m.2 is m.2. I don't know enough about it other than it's quite common in laptops (for fitting multiple drives in a small space)

@Golgotha I'm not very informed here either unfortunately D:

as long as it's not on a carpet i don't know what else you can do. Never had to worry about it here.

What is your budget? £1500-£2000 Been dithering over buying a new PC for years, my old one takes ages to boot, runs slow and is full of crap. My problem is committing to it as I don't *need* to upgrade for a specific game say at the moment.

My immediate concern is the streaming and video editing which my current PC is unsuitable for, in terms of graphics, most of my time is currently spent playing Hearthstone and starting to stream. However, in the next year or so I do want to play the Witcher 3 and the new TES game etc. whenever that comes out on max settings.

Native Resolution: 1920 x 1080 Considering getting a new monitor now over my BenQ XL2411T which again is getting on a bit.

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? As above Everything from Hearthstone to the Witcher 3, and on the horizon the next Elder Scrolls etc. as close to max as I can. I have no immediate need for the graphics power however. What I'm looking for definitely is a fast processor, lots of RAM and a good SSD for the video editing and multitasking. What I'm struggling with is whether to buy a good graphics card and monitor now, or save a few hundred, use my Radeon 7970 in the new build for another year or so, and then buy something next gen when it comes out. Alternatively I could buy something high end now and use it in SLI in a year or so.

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Streaming and video editing.

Do you intend to overclock? Yes although have zero experience.

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? Depends on above.

Do you need an operating system? Yes Windows 10

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? I need a monitor at some point, but again see above. I also need a good mic and webcam which are included in budget.

What country will you be buying your parts in? UK

Comes out to £1060. However that does not include a monitor, GPU, microphone or webcam.

If you don't need the extra graphics power right now it would be worth it to stick with your 7970 because both Nvidia and AMD are slated to release a new generation of graphics cards this year. With your budget, moving up to a 1440p monitor is something that would be worth considering.

More information regarding what kind of microphone you are looking for would help with choosing one.

How much smaller physically and power consumption wise will the 970 next gen equivalent be about?

Is plausible that you'll see cards at the ~960 tier with ~970 performance.

Right now, 970 has about 1.65x more power consumption at the same clock speeds.

Looked at another way, there will be a card with the same power usage, size & features of the 970 but simply with more performance.

An increase in performance per watt of 1.5x (arbitrary number) means that you can get "200w of performance" for 133w but it also means that you can get "300w of performance" from a next gen card in the same 200w window that the 970 sits in with a mid range overclock.

Anybody who claims to know exact or even roughly approximate numbers for next gen performance is making it up right now - not only does nobody know, but it's in AMD and Nvidia's best interest to provide misinformation and hide the true release dates and performance of all of the new stuff until the day that it releases. Every time they give out info about next gen, their current gen sales plummet. Every time there's a "HEY GUYS AMAZING NEXT GEN AVAILABLE NOW" post, they get tens of thousands of hype sales.

Thanks for the reply. I hadn't considered the Mic too much and was planning on something simple like a Blue Yeti. I'll be in a quiet room an would prefer it out of the way if that makes any difference.

I guess my only question on your build is are you sure that's sufficient power for potential graphics upgrades?

i7 6700k would at most draw 160w and a gtx 980ti would at most draw 300w even overclocked. So unless you are planning on going for sli/crossfire of the top tier card when its released, 550w is fine.

At a moderate overclock yes
+ Show Spoiler +
At an enthusiast level with a card that's designed for it (higher voltages, custom bios) you can put far more power through the card (around the 450-500w range) without risking its life, which i just want to note because you can't do that for some other parts. By the time you get to the voltages needed to make a 6700k use 200w, you would probably kill the CPU with it

For a standard user & light overclocker it's completely fine. Top end graphics cards use similar amounts of power gen to gen (by design) and usually this is about 250-300w so that's not much of a concern unless you mean multiple 980ti's/equivelant. You can overbuy PSU capacity as long as you understand it's overbuying relative to those parts or rough equivelants from future generations

Okay so I can't expect it to be smaller or consume less. Reason I'm asking is I bought the htc vive, and I have to upgrade the GPU which in turn would require a new psu and case. PSU is corsair 430w, and case fits max an 11' card. If next gen was smaller and more efficient, obviously these upgrades wouldn't be necessary.

Also, I still have an i5 3570k with a a z77 pro4 m mobo. Would it pose problems for vr or even new gpu?

3570k's (especially with OC) are behind current gen but not by that much. IIRC some VR headsets need a ridiculous amount of usb3.0 connections which might be an issue on older motherboards

for GPU you could probably get a 970 or fury nano now, next gen there will be cards in similar power and size windows with substantially better performance but the small form factor ones might not come immediately at launch. Pricing could be quite high too

Yeah the rift does require a lot of usbs, the vive only one though.

I'd prefer the 970, or even the r9 390 since it has double the vram, as the nano is pretty expensive. So I shouldn't expect the next gen 970 equivalent to be similarly priced (in the $300-350 range)?

I think you'd get something good at that power consumption tier around $300-400

Nvidia launched the 980/970 at $550/$329 for reference. Going back a gen before (smaller GPU's but the first of 28nm, so those offset each other for costs..) the 680/670 launched at $500/$400.

Yeah so wouldn't it be better to wait? Get better performance for the same price. I do want to experience the vive right away, I just don't know how hard it would be to sell the 970 afterwards.

Hey guys here's the dilema I'm having. I have my build all setup and I've had it for a while, the only thing I'm missing is my GPU. The question is should I aim for the gtx 950 or 970.

I wanna start focusing on just playing competitive games so CSGo, StarCraft 2, UT4, Overwatch when that comes out. And RPGs as well when they come out (the division, dark souls 3, etc)

I plan to get the flagship 980ti equivalent card when Pascal comes out its just for the time being idk if I should get the 950 or the 970. Note: I don't have a ton of money to throw around since I have a lot of debt to pay off currently for school.

Here's what my build is right now (I can't make changes because like I said I've had this for a while) http://pcpartpicker.com/p/FwZXCJ
