Anyways, I ordered a PC today and the GPU is a ASUS ROG Matrix R9 290x (not the OC'd version). I read on the internet that this card some trouble with it's cooler. Is there anyone out here that owns the card and could tell me if it reduces it's clock speed in some games due to overheating? I don't care so much for the noise or anything since I am wearing a headset or earplugs all the time anyway but if the card really isn't able to run on 100% performance, then I will cancel my order. Thanks for any replies.

take a look at the "Fan Profiles and Throttling" paragraph.

But it probably means that you can increase the fan rpm so that it won't overheat anyway.

There are some differences from sample to sample because of random differences in manufacturing quality and characteristics between different GPU chips, resulting in different voltages that need to be run and power consumption profiles. And there are big differences in coolers between models and even sample to sample as well, based on the exact shape of the mating surface in particular and perhaps if the cooler is loosened a bit by shipping. This means that anything you read may not necessarily apply for your situation. edit: GTX 970 is rough equivalent.

i7 4790k ASUS ROG Matrix r9 290x 120 GB SSD 1 TB SATA hardrive ASUS H81 mainboard +optical drives, PSU, case for 1000 euro. There was no option to change to GPU and all the other options seemed less good. Is that way too much or close to a fair price?

It depends on the exact model of the psu, mobo, ram, SSD, hdd, and case at this point. Imo, it seems like you may have gotten old parts at the price it was when they were released but I don't know. The processor or gpu seems fairly priced Also, the optical drive may be unnecessary. I would put that money towards a cooler but there is no point to worry about that

Installed an aftermarket cooler for the first time today because Witcher 3 has been eating my CPU alive. It would always be at 60-70C and would routinely break 70C. On other non-CPU intensive games it's usually at 50C+. On idle and regular web surfing stuff it's pretty cool at below 30C. So I got a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo. I took my time and the installation went okay. But the results are just not what I expected, it was much better! It idles below 20C now and when I play Witcher 3, the hottest core barely breaks 35C. It's great!! I have an i5 4590 btw, just went with the stock cooler initially because I wasn't going to be overclocking.

Well that was part of the reason I wanted to share, because it sounded too good to be true so I wanted some opinions. So do you think the software (Speedfan) is off by 10 degrees, which meant I was going over 80C before? Is a 35-40 degree improvement when replacing the stock cooler normal?

Those temperatures sound inaccurate ~5c delta over room temp for coolest cores at idle is totally doable :D So do you think the software (Speedfan) is off by 10 degrees, which meant I was going over 80C before? You can easily check with other software, my favourite is hwinfo (www.hwinfo.com)

Summers here are hot as hell (40 degree celsius is no exception) but obviously I have an air conditioning so room temp shouldnt be over 20 or max 25 degrees. I regret not doing it on my initial build but atleast i don't need to disassemble the system when i install the cpu cooler i am gonna get since my case allows me to do that. if you need to know what cooler is compatible You should use pcpartpicker.com, add your case and CPU to the build list and then pick a cpu cooler. It should show which is compatible and which isn't.

Anything I have here that is completely unnecessary for my needs? I am Computer Science major going to college for freshman year this fall and will be buying this computer during Black Friday sales and building it shortly after. Until then, I have a very entry level laptop I'm using for almost all my computing.
