Hi all,

Years ago I got some solid advice here, so I would like to ask you again for a build for my parents. The mobo seems to have died and the PC is pretty ancient anyways (apart from a few upgraded parts).

Therefore I'm looking for a mostly new build. I can re-use the harddisks (HD and SSD), DVD drive and maybe graphics card + Show Spoiler +
I can't figure out what the current card is. It says article number 20041010 and serial number starts with MS - V127. It also has N1996 printed on the board. I can't find more that it should be "a" NVidea GeForce

What is your budget?
Prefer to keep it low, <500-600 euro

What is your monitor's native resolution?
2 monitors at 1920x1080

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
Essentially no games except for perhaps some flash/online stuff.

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Basically it will hardly be used for gaming. Regular office work, some video/stream watching, browsing, online flash games, etc.

Do you intend to overclock?
Not necessarily, unless it is something I can easily do for them (I haven't done it before, but I heard multipliers should be pretty easy)

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No

Do you need an operating system?
No

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
No

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
No need to get harddisks, optical drive. Graphics card can be given optional

What country will you be buying your parts in?
Netherlands

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.

Site is in dutch, but I guess you can still figure out the parts and prices there.

I more than appreciate any help!

Thanks! Is it nowadays no problem to hook up multiple monitors to an integrated graphics? It will most likely be used with 1 VGA and 1 DVI monitor.

Any reason for H97 over H81 and non-refresh i3? Just curious.

Non-refresh i3? Price, core frequency.

H97? It was more about the system probably going to be used a long time (CPU VRM heatsinks, better than bottom build quality), Intel NIC, HDMI / DVI / VGA video outputs (two monitors are going to be used and the inputs not specified... may as well get two digital outs), support for refresh processors in case of unlikely upgrade without BIOS update (which could be forgotten). It's maybe or probably not worth it over stuff 10-30 euros less, but it's hard to say.

What is your budget?
Low. Trying to keep it under 500.

What is your monitor's native resolution?
1920x1080

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
StarCraft 2, LoL, DOTA2, HotS, Hearthstone, Football Manager. I would like to at least have the option of playing newer games on lower settings. I run all of those on the lowest possible right now

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
I would like to stream a little. Nothing professional, just a mid-range type deal for my friends to check out once in awhile. Beyond that, mainly gaming and just general PC stuff.

Do you intend to overclock?
No

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No

Do you need an operating system?
Eh, no. I'll just transfer my HD since I bought it less than a year ago.

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
No.

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
N/a

What country will you be buying your parts in?
USA

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
Amazon/Newegg, but w/e.

With that said, here is what I currently have in my shopping cart. I'm just wondering if this is probably the best route to go since I'm on a pretty low budget. I'm undecided about a case (get a new one or use my old one), so end price could be +30-50 dollars.

Sapphire Radeon R7 260x 2GB @125

MSI A78M Mobo @62

AMD Athlon Multi Core 3.8 @82

Crucial Ballistix 8g DDR3 @75

Rosewill 450w 80 PLUS @60

= About $404

Do I need a higher power supply? Are there any areas you guys would change to keep it around the same price for similar/higher power?

It's pretty mandatory to use an Intel CPU for blizzards RTS engine (starcraft 2, heroes of the storm) and LoL also prefers that, i'm not sure about other games there.

450w is way too much for a system like that so don't worry, but there is a shortage of good PSU's at lower wattages so it's quite common to use 450

Thoughts?

Ram is a bit overkill on quantity but my wife kind of insisted cause she uses the computer too, considering what I currently play the whole computer is overkill but it allows me to future proof against other games somewhat. The alternative is that I could just run with my GTX 460 that I currently have until I actually need something stronger

Just looking at pictures, I like how it looks. It seems the fans are larger than what's typical? That might make the fans more quiet. One image showed the base plate of the cooler where it touches the GPU chip, and that's not just the heat-pipes directly touching the chip, is instead a nice plate. If they soldered that well, that should be great.

I feel like I've seen the Corsair cx430 recommended? NE has it on sale for $36 before a $20 MIR. Is that worth getting for a basic build? (mid range gpu, no oc etc)

Ya CX430 is fine for any video card with one PCIe connector.

I think a good rule of thumb, to use as a guideline when looking at PSUs, is looking at the 12V rail. Most of the system's power comes from that rail (more than 80%, most of the time), the 12V rail is the one that supplies power the graphics card, the processor (which are the two big consumers of power) as well as other miscellaneous parts. Compare two popular PSUs:

http://www.corsair.com/en-us/cx430-80-plus-bronze-certified-power-supply

http://www.rosewill.com/products/1803/ProductDetail_Specifications.htm

Assuming we disregard things like voltage regulation, ripple suppression, build quality and efficiency, you can just look at the 12V rail and multiply that by the amperage it can pull off. The CX 430 is at 32*12 = 384W, whereas the Capstone 450 is at 37*12 = 444W. Just looking at that tag shows you that the CX430's capabilities are closer to a 380W PSU rather than a 430W unit.

Of course, just looking at that tag doesn't tell you all the story. Efficiency comes into play as well. Imagine you're running a PSU with 80% efficiency, and your rig needs 300W to run. The PSU will draw 375W from the wall socket. 20% of that energy will become heat. However, if your PSU is efficient to 90%, then powering a 300W rig will only draw ~340W from the wall socket and less heat will be generated. Less heat generated means less work for the fan means quieter PSU.

These are some basic aspects to look at when comparing PSUs and it's why the CX430 is crap compared to the Capstone 450 for example.

That said, the CX430 is still sufficient to power modern rigs with Haswell processors and mainstream graphics cards.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7764/the-nvidia-geforce-gtx-750-ti-and-gtx-750-review-maxwell/10

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7764/the-nvidia-geforce-gtx-750-ti-and-gtx-750-review-maxwell/22

^In that review, you see that a big 6 core 4960X, overclocked to 4.2 GHz with a GTX 750 Ti needs ~180W of power to run.

A CX430 would be dangerous to run a 4930K, overclocked to 4.7 GHz with a high end graphics card however:

@KOFgokuon hyper212 is kinda underpowered cooler, $35 is also expensive for it.. they used to be like $25. Whatever you do, temperatures will not be amazing so it's better to shoot for upper midrange if you dont want high end cooler, 212 is just meh tier compared to stronger options (if you was in europe, i would tell you to grab a true spirit 140 power for 1/5'th of the cost of i5)

Also see if there's faster RAM available at similar price point because it usually doesn't cost significantly more. I've seen significant (as much as gaining 200-300mhz on CPU) returns from RAM speed on three major engines (blizzards RTS engine for sc2/heroes, frostbite engine and source engine)

@wussleeQ If i had to guess, i would say the MSI gaming 970 is -better- than the gigabyte one, while also being cheaper. It's not worse. Everyone is flocking to the MSI card and more than a couple on OCN have broken 1600mhz/8000mhz stable on air with it

Hm ok. I assume that the hyper212 has changed in the last 4 years right? At least the mounting bracket must have changed. Other wise I could just reuse the one I have lol

I'll look into ram, what's there was just a place holder for when I was making a bidder , I'm likely to wait for a bargain on slickdeals for components anyways

There's plenty of work related stuff that requires 16gb or more. If she says she needs it then she probably knows what she'll be doing with it.

Oh yeah for sure then. My rule of thumb is that if someone isn't sure whether or not they need more than 8 Gb of RAM, it's that they don't. If she asked for it specifically, well, there you have it.

Ya, it's way too common for people to buy too much RAM, they say it's for future proof but then buy it in the future.

After some followup discussion with Cryo, I wanted to raise this question to a larger audience. Was interested in knowing if there was another option in the $25-$50 range that might be stronger than the Hyper 212+. I've used the 212+ before and like it, but was curious what othero ptions there were, noctua stuff all seems much more expensive
